The cortege going through Dublin was lovely.
To lose Sinéad and Shane so close together is so sad.

EachandEveryone · 08/12/2023 16:07

They are singing Haunted god I miss Sinead as well. This is a gorgeous service.

I’m glad you started this - I’m watching and marvelling at the off-beat sections of it.

Janiie · 08/12/2023 16:24

It is a beautiful service and Nick Cave was brilliant as ever but tbh I'm surprised it's getting the coverage it is. Many people love Fairytale of New York but I bet none of us could name any other Pogue hits. Sky news treating it like a VIP has sadly died.

EachandEveryone · 08/12/2023 16:29

Well he was a poet wasn’t he? And Irelands son. I think we will all be in bits by the end of it

In bits now

Rainy Night in Soho is his best imo. Also love A Pair Brown Eyes.

I could name dozens of his songs. Was a fan of the Pogues when they were still the support act.

Apologies. I didn't mean to sound dismissive and it really is a moving service.

megletthesecond · 08/12/2023 16:46

I didn't realise I'd missed Nick Cave.
The men's choir are wonderful, love they're in normal clothes and not trussed up in suits.

EachandEveryone · 08/12/2023 16:51

I know. I don’t know why Johnny Depp had an Irish accent though

We're all Irish today

Elderflower14 · 08/12/2023 17:24

I've been getting my 87 year old Mum to listen to Rainy Night In Soho, Dirty Old Town and Irish Rover!! She enjoyed them!!

EachandEveryone · 08/12/2023 17:24

Im Up to Fairytale of New York

JD seems so strange, his Irish accent equally odd. I mean why?

MooseBreath · 08/12/2023 17:32

The Pogues has been one of my favourite bands since childhood. Rainy Night in Soho and and Turkish Song of the Damned are genius.

Shane McGowan hits hard, like Bowie did.

Janiie · 08/12/2023 17:34

The Fairytale in New York performance was brilliant, the bloke singing was amazing as was the woman.

Listening to his sister's eulogy I had no idea they were born and brought up in England. Didn't he speak wirh an Irish accent?

And yes Depp's faux accent was weird.

LadyEloise1 · 08/12/2023 17:43

Glen Hansard was the guy singing - he won an Oscar for "Falling Slowly" iirc.
Think Cathy Davey is the female singer. She has a real "sean nós" type of voice ( old Irish tradtion of singing without accompaniment ) which I normally dislike but is great here.
Powerful stuff.

RIP Shane - ní bheidh do leithéid ann arís,
( your likes won't be seen again )

Marblessolveeverything · 08/12/2023 17:43

I think it's the end of an era, he signified a lot of my youth and early adulthood, a risk taker.

We lost Sinead, and Christy Dignam of Aslan as well it feels we are losing our rebels, may they rest in rowdy musical peace.x

LadyEloise1 · 08/12/2023 17:45

Could someone pull up the clip please- total technophobe here. I got it on The Journal. It's on YouTube too.

EachandEveryone · 08/12/2023 17:46

I’m surprised that Victoria is so together I expect she’s in shock yet has known it was coming. Lord she worshipped him and looked after him so well, I bet she wasn’t laughing at the time 😀

his widow has gone on too long though and some of the stuff she is saying - sisters eulogy was lovely though

whatausername · 08/12/2023 17:51

The music has been fantastic and I am impressed how quickly the priests got through that many communions! I've turned off the eulogies for now though.
By the by, I only heard Depp's American accent when he delivered the prayer!?
This funeral has been carried out very well. It's clearly thoroughly planned but without any stiffness or distance that might be expected in a very structured occasion. People are everywhere, wearing whatever they (seem to) feel comfortable in and there' hugging and smiling and dancing.

TheFormidableMrsC · 08/12/2023 18:39

I cried buckets! The Irish know how to do funerals ❤️☘️
