One opinion that you have that will never waver, no matter what?..

You can't tell the difference between branded and non-branded food products

We tested this in uni. We did 10 rounds of blind taste testing with 5 cups, each cup was a random mixed pattern of Coke, Pepsi & a non brand Cola.

Going into it nearly 100% of participant where confident they would be able to tell the difference. In the end though around 10% actually correctly identified (over 90% of the time) which was which during testing.

Mistakes in the 'pass' category tended to happen towards the last few rounds of testing, although breaks where taken they where only 10 minutes at a time so it may have been flavor confusion. People who 'failed' (the majority) continuously guessed wrong from the beginning.

More interestingly is before starting everyone was asked what their favorite brand was. The most common answer in the test group by far was 'coke' yet almost all of the 10% who passed had answered that 'Pepsi' was their favorite.

A lot of participants who failed to correctly identify the difference 'didn't believe' their results. Many still insisted they could tell the difference.

It wasn't an official published test (it was just a common test type used to learn the process of testing) but it was very eye opening.

We did similar at school with cheese. A fancy cheddar and a supermarket basic one. Except the person who was meant to bring the other cheese forgot and we only had one type. Rather than own up to the teacher we just split the one type in half and used that for the experiment. Everyone claimed they had a preference for one type over the other and that there was a clear difference. People like to believe they are more discerning than they really are.

This made me laugh a lot more than it should. Such a teenager thing to do!

Totally! That teacher and I had already had our clashes. She claimed (this was in the mid-90s so not a million years ago) that none of our grandparents would be used to eating takeaways other than fish and chips. She asked how shocked any of our grandparents would be if it was suggested to them to go and get a Chinese takeaway delivered. I, somewhat smugly, answered that as my granny was Chinese she would usually be a bit offended we didn't want her to cook instead but she wouldn't mind once in a while.

Then I accidentally stained the new countertop with turmeric and tried to claim it made her kitchen look cool as it meant a variety of spices were regularly used there. 😅

Grandparents is a broad term... as if all grans are equal lol.

My younger granny was in her 40s in the 90s my other granny was 70 before the 90s ended.

All work has value and is something to be proud of and respected. Everyone who gets their ass out of bed and works hard deserves to feel good about it. If it's not a 'career' job it doesn't mean it has less value. All jobs involve building up skills that can be applied elsewhere.

In respects to this I believe the WORST jobs should be compensated best and vice versa.

So the person who scrubs and unclogs public toilets should not be struggling to survive on minimum wage while the person who turned their hobby and passion of sport into a living should not be paid £60,000 per week (its really a modern thing, historically they weren't).

I don't understand how we got to a place where we pay the least amount possible and look down on people who do the most unwanted jobs. Surely they should be the incentivized jobs with big rewards because people are giving up their lives to do the necessary yet horrible jobs that we need to function as a society. They should not be the ones looked down on as 'unskilled'.

Yes it's quite shocking when you think about it. Capitalism, that's what's the problem.

What I can't stand is young casual workers with an attitude cos it's not their 'real' job. It's a real job to many people who still deliver a good service despite low pay, they slap a smile on their face and get on with it. They are absolutely the unsung heroes in our society.

The Tories have killed this country and any alternative will be better even if we don't agree with everything the opposition parties say

Froodwithatowel · 05/12/2023 16:01

YMMV.

I'm not sure any alternative IS better, and 'not agreeing with everything they say' is not the same as 'will lose my rights and become part of an unseen sub class subordinated to men, lose safeguarding and be at risk for being openly homosexual, as well as at risk for being arrested for hate crime for stating truth'.

I mean, totalitarian nightmare....? I don't think it's a mild 'well I don't agree with you inflicting that on me but maybe the gulag fences will be painted pretty colours and maybe the country as a whole might be a bit less awful' is going to make it sound a lot better. I mean, in Nazi Germany people were being slaughtered in millions in the camps but the trains were running perfectly on time. Did that outweigh the issues that people like the Jewish community and the LGB community and Gypsy community wouldn't have agreed with?

To me it IS this serious. The left parties have collectively gone insane. Dangerously insane for many. You'll be fine if you're in a currently privileged group, but you'll have nothing but hope that your group continue to stay privileged. You didn't mind it happening to others, so there'll be no one to stop it happening to you too.

Froodwithatowel · 05/12/2023 16:07

How did that speech by Kinnock go, about 'I warn you not to be old, I warn you not to get sick'.

Under any party in hock to this ideology, literally in hock in most cases, and I don't care about the name of the party or the colour of the rosette - then for your sake and happiness:

I hope you're white British
I hope you're straight
I hope you're able bodied
I hope you neurotypical
I hope you've been lucky with literacy and education
I hope you're atheist
I hope you're privileged enough to not have experiences Child Sexual Abuse or Domestic Abuse or Violence
I hope you're an adult and not a little girl who has to grow up in all this
I hope you're unconfused about your gender.

If you're lucky enough to tick all those boxes then you can vote without caring much because it won't be much skin off your nose. You'll mostly be all right. Those not as lucky as you? Well who cares, right? It's not like the left believe in equality or social justice or anything.

And in the words of JKR: This is not a drill.

Defend itself from what?

Hamas, Palestinian Islamist Jihad, and other groups that seek to eradicate Jews kidnapping, murdering and torturing its citizens? Did you not notice the attacks on the 7th of October?

Thirded. I'm actually surprised not to see that more often on this site, as it normally doesn't just take the compulsory woke stance.

DaizenShine · 05/12/2023 16:29

This sort of thing can get a bit fucked up, though. I worked in Australia years ago and a very hardworking Russian surgeon came to join the hospital team. He said lorry drivers earned more than him under the Soviet regime because he counted as an "intellectual," which was frowned upon.

It most certainly does not. If I ever opened a pizzeria, anyone trying to request pineapple as a topping would be met with swift ejection, followed by a lifetime ban.

Well my best friend is a ODP and makes under £35k a year where as I have family who are lorry drivers who make over £35k here in the UK.

I think both jobs are equally needed in society. Without transport of goods things would cease to function (even hospitals) and with surgery people will die. Neither are glamorous or easy but for very different reasons.
