...the lid of your wheelie bin is frozen shut. 😂

Come tell me the random little signs of winter where you are. ❄🌨

When the collie who normally starts attempts of waking you up at 0645 to start the day with a 45 mile walk (her aim that has never came to fruition - yes we can get up and go a walk but 45 mins not 45 miles) isn’t ready to finish snuggles in bed at 0900 😂

CockaPoodleDo · 01/12/2023 23:54

You’re searching for the marble to prevent the hedgehog’s water freezing.

Iloveanicegarden · 01/12/2023 23:56

@chaosmaker cwtch Welsh for cuddle.

justasking111 · 01/12/2023 23:57

My asthma plays up, heating, log burner, closed windows, two dogs and a cat. And I start coughing.

Oliveandrose · 01/12/2023 23:57

I’m absolutely loving reading these as it’s SO hot right now in North Queensland. Might book a flight outta here!

Iloveanicegarden · 01/12/2023 23:57

Anyone had icy frost ferns on the inside of bedroom windows yet?

justasking111 · 01/12/2023 23:52

Yep found a poop in the bath this morning

What is it about cats and baths?

Still, at least it's easier to clean than under the spare bed...

Crumpets in the morning it's the only thing that melts the butter.

Dumplings in the stew

IDontOftenComment · 01/12/2023 23:59

When you keep your socks on to go to bed 😱

CrunchyCarrot · 01/12/2023 23:59

There's frost on all the cars outside, but my cat still stays out till nearly midnight!

onwardandupwards · 02/12/2023 00:01

The local park is free of teenagers sat all over the little ones play equipment! Wine chills very quick in the garden too!

justasking111 · 02/12/2023 00:02

The fridge in the garage the cans of coke start exploding

Hardcore cat. Respect.

I should have guessed when I started this thread that it was going to be largely about cats!

We had brand new double glazing and doors fitted this summer, the house is lovely and warm even though the thermostat is only set at 18deg. Heating goes off at night and house is still pleasantly warm all night.
It has been a revelation just how draughty and inefficient the old (25yrs+) windows and doors were.

Apart from DS19’s bedroom where the heating is off and the windows open. I swear he’s half polar bear.

The car door is frozen and won't open

DH has been using a crowbar to open the frozen side door on the van, until someone told him to put Vaseline on the rubber seals.

Another sign is vehicles in the ditch on the bend leading into the village.

I hate it too. My arthritic ankles are bloody killing me and I hate driving in icy conditions.

coxesorangepippin · 02/12/2023 00:23

Don't put body moisturiser on before going outside, you'll feel really cold

Your tyres feel like rolling on squares

A coffee is cold by the time you get to the end of the street

Santaiswashinghissleigh · 01/12/2023 18:47

Had our dcat 3 years. Managed to keep her in with the ddogs in the next room who keep peeping in! No hissing yet. Progress indeed!

She is beautiful 😍

Agapornis · 02/12/2023 00:25

DCat1 finally sleeps on my lap. DCat2 finally uses his radiator hammock. I'm under 2 high-tog down duvets with a hot water bottle. For a special treat, DCat1&2 both came for a snuggle under the duvet 🥰

(Love that is now a cat thread.)

SheSaidHummingbird · 02/12/2023 00:26

You run into work, head for the radiators and hug them for 40 minutes.

You have to turn the heated driveway on, otherwise its too slippery to walk on to leave the garden.

Heated driveway? I want one!

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 02/12/2023 00:38

Well… I’m in Maine so it’s half the year. It’s stuff like every day wondering if I wear my snowshoes, Yaktrax, crampons or regular snow boots for the dog walk. Having to snowblow a foot or so of snow so people and animals can get in and out of the house. Having to wait for the snowplow guy clear the driveway before you can finally leave for work (I’d love a heated driveway). The cats (part Maine Coon) refusing to go outside for 6 months. Having to run the generator because the power is out again. Woodstove lit to try to keep the gas bill below $500 a month. Snow on the ground for 5 months straight, then when it melts finding all the stuff the dog took out and left there last year. Nothing actually growing till May at the earliest. The washing line collapsing under the weight of the ice during an ice storm. Dressing the kids in salopettes, ski jackets, snow boots, ski gloves and hats for the bus ride to school. Crashes all over the roads during snowstorms. Running the car for 10 mins before you go anywhere because it’s -15 in there. Taking a snow brush and long-handled ice scraper everywhere in the car. Owning 3 different weights of down jacket. Always having spare hand warmers in the pockets of your dog walking coat. Fleece lined leggings.

Last year it went down to -40C and if we’d lost power we’d have had to go to a warming shelter. Fortunately it only flickered briefly.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 02/12/2023 00:41

Also the sound of studded snow tyres meaning you can’t actually hear much else when you’re in the car.

But also the fun of going to an empty car park after a snow storm, and driving around like a mad bastard under the guise of teaching your kids how to steer through a skid and that brakes stop working in snow.

Mamanyt · 02/12/2023 00:45

Not now, but growing up in Alaska, the first sign of real winter could be the first snowfall...about 22" of it. And I'd move back there in a heartbeat if I could afford it.

CVVW · 02/12/2023 00:46

I'm too hot laid in bed. Perimenopause.

I don't like not being able to go in the garden after work but I do enjoy the run up to Christmas.

ScottBakula · 02/12/2023 00:57

@ZZTopGuitarSolo you are made of stern stuff!

@Simonjt , at first I thought you had some kind of electric element or heated water pumped under your drive that would cost a fortune.
But the waste water sounds like a ingenious idea .
In the UK can tell if pavements / roads have waste water / sewage pipes close to the surface as they defrost slightly quicker so it seems very sensible to make proper use of it like you have
