...the lid of your wheelie bin is frozen shut. 😂

Come tell me the random little signs of winter where you are. ❄🌨

The eleven year old is overjoyed because it’s time for layer-Tetris, wherein a competition is had to see how many layers can be wedged underneath the coat, and have the coat still zip up. It’s a bit of a tricksy beast this year, as the coat is last years and somewhat snug. However, on Thursday a celebration was had, as long sleeved shirt, jumper, and fleece were squeezed into the age 10-11 parka along with the child. I may have to buy a new one just to see the unbridled joy that will be evidenced.

Yes, yes I do have a batshit child. Grin

Also, the cats are furious, as you’d expect. The local stray has moved into the kitchen for the winter.

I am pondering putting the 4.5 tog duvet away and getting the 7 tog one out.

Septembe66 · 01/12/2023 22:16

Going for a pee in the night and the pan is like sitting on a block of ice 🥶

FreshWinterMorning · 01/12/2023 22:17

A bottle of water I left in the car overnight was a block of ice this morning!

sixteenfurryfeet · 01/12/2023 22:18

So many cat ones. Lol.

Very true - One of mine has tried the back door, the front door, the patio door and the kitchen window in sequence, and then went round the whole lot again. He was most miffed that the weather was equally cold outside all of them. He is now asleep on my pillow instead. Furry git.

The water I left in the car no longer retains its traditional liquid format! ❄️

plominoagain · 01/12/2023 22:24

Our two outdoor feral cats have decided to spend their evenings camping out in our annex loft now it’s turned chilly . Went up there to get the Christmas decorations down today , and discovered teenage DS has put the spare dog bed up there , lined it with a duvet and fluffy blankets , and no wonder they’re in like a shot every night 🤣

Cheeseplantalltheway · 01/12/2023 22:25

@NotAStrongFemaleRoleModel I wouldn't worry about the rabbits. Ours have a well insulated shed but choose to sit outside! Last year they were out at 3am when it was minus eight here. Just because they wanted to.

They have winter fur.

Trickofthetrade · 01/12/2023 22:27

My mood lifts, I have more energy, and I amd generally happier !

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 01/12/2023 22:29

When the cat flap freezes and I can hear the cats scratching at it at like 3am trying to get in or out.

TrobadoraBeatrice · 01/12/2023 22:32

When you put your beer outside to chill rather than in the fridge (which would be warmer) 😀 We also store veg outside at this time of year as well, in a careful arrangement of plastic tubs to prevent rain getting in.

Guesswho88 · 01/12/2023 22:38

Having to smash the ice on top of the cat and dog's outside water bowl with a broom handle.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 01/12/2023 22:39

Couldnt put the dogs in the car this morning because both back doors were frozen shut.

@sixteenfurryfeet

This has happened to me on all 3 bins! For the last few days... (Purple lidded one, green one, and grey one!) I have tipped some warm water all over the lids to free them, and placed a small flat piece of slate, like the size of a domino under the lid on each bin, so I can open it and put stuff in!

Just bang them quite hard at the front (opening) edge of the lid. You will hear the seal break.

ProfSleepzz · 01/12/2023 22:53

I sleep with 14 layers on and a balaclava.

skyfalldown · 01/12/2023 22:55

The living room won't get above 12c

  1. The kids are wearing tights under their belts school skirts and might even be wearing coats.
  2. You wake up at 3am with cats in your bed, rather than on the bed.
  3. People who live at either end of the bus route are stranded because the bus drivers don't fancy coming downhill sideways (and backwards).
  4. I'm actually wearing socks indoors.
  5. The gritter lorries are all parked up in the depot because nobody at the LA thought the weather forecast was in any way relevant to planning because it never snows in December. And probably didn't get around to ordering grit in any case.
  6. People start washing their cars at the weekend to ensure that there are sheets of ice across the pavements, having not bothered all summer or autumn.

They have been known to send out gritters in just about every month here bar June, July and August. They've been out a few times in the last week.

That's the Pennines for you, though. 😆

Waitinggame42023 · 01/12/2023 22:59

Frozen cobwebs all over the street lanterns and fence!

Mongrelsrbeautiful · 01/12/2023 22:59

LubaLuca · 01/12/2023 18:44

Your teenage son leaves the house wearing a coat. No nagging required, not stuffed in his bag, actually on and zipped up.

That's never going to happen - ever

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 01/12/2023 23:01

The fridge freezer doesn't cycle to cool down very often. There's no heating in my kitchen so cold in there

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 01/12/2023 23:11

The DC fight over who gets to wear my Yaktrax when they leave the house (seriously, if you have to walk on pavements when it's icy, buy some NOW. Genuinely lifechanging, but they sell out within hours of icy weather).

The random pigeon that moved into our house last winter turns up, on the off chance of living on the bookcase for a few months.

feelingalittlehorse · 01/12/2023 23:14

Dogs require toileting bribery.

OuiOuiMonAmiJeMappelleLafayette · 01/12/2023 23:16

You have to set the hot tub to 40°C!

Fundays12 · 01/12/2023 23:17

The cats come in at night as soon as they are called and glare at me grumpily when I dare to put outside in the day.

OutOfSyncWithReality · 01/12/2023 23:17

ChoupetteTheCat · 01/12/2023 19:02

You are so right. Nothing better than frozen poo, so easy to pick up.

And it warms your hands.
