House is still a shithole. Pic included

A few weeks or so back I posted pics of bedrooms in my house. They were a shithole. Me/kids have managed to keep the bedrooms tidy /reasonable.

But my stairs and living room are a mess. I could probably have it all sorted in a couple of hours. But it feels like the end of the world. I feel so drained. And even when i do start doing it something really silly can happen then I feel like giving up.

Or like a few weeks back I started feeling really positive. And got loads done . But after that period of positive cleaning. I won't get that feeling back for a while and just stop.

It should be really simple but it does not feel like it.

I only get a bath /shower once a week sometimes less. I could smell myself earlier and all I did was use baby wipes under my arms and a bit of deodorant.

Anyway I have added photos again . To Shame myself into actually cleaning up .

Could you be depressed op?

hotcandle · 17/11/2023 21:55

I'd get a plastic bag and bin any of that rubbish that isn't clothes tbh. Looks like a ton of small pieces of rubbish.

Bin bin bin

cassiatwenty · 17/11/2023 21:57

You don't need to shame yourself. A bit messy but nothing horrendous. I like it even because there are some pics of really sterile places and your place looks even warm, like real actual people live there.

If you are struggling, you don't need to get it all sorted in one day. When you can, try 10 minuted per day and before you know it, it'll be up to your standard again. Bit by bit.

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 17/11/2023 21:57

Yes. But neither of those look like big jobs:

rubbish in bin bags
bin bags in bin
hoover

Towerofsong · 17/11/2023 21:57

Yes it sounds like maybe depression?

Your living room doesn't look too bad for having kids but please clear that staircase urgently, as if you had a fire or needed to get out at night quickly it's a real hazard.

KateyCuckoo · 17/11/2023 21:58

Just get a box and chuck it all it.

Hoover the stairs tomorrow and Sunday empty the basket

Baby steps

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 17/11/2023 21:58

And hide the wrapped Christmas presents! It’s November, you’ve got kids. Maintain the magic!

Sunnywithchanceofshowers · 17/11/2023 21:58

All that stuff on the stairs is asking for someone to break their neck. Could you at least rake it all together in a big pile and get everyone to claim anything they don’t want to be thrown away?

cassiatwenty · 17/11/2023 21:59

Also as others have suggested, you could be depressed, when even simplest of tasks feel like a huge hurdle

Dacadactyl · 17/11/2023 22:00

Are you depressed? Do you work?

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 17/11/2023 22:00

Two separate issues.

First, you need to speak to your gp about your mood.

Secondly, break it down into chunks. Firstly and easiest, bin the rubbish. Get a bin bag and throw all the trash in it. Next gather up all the strewn laundry and either put it in the wash/laundry basket/a bag. Move whatever that box is on the stairs and vacuum the stairs.

Once those things are done you can plan the next few steps.

dixeypeach · 17/11/2023 22:03

Looks like depression to me I'm the same, small jobs feels like you've been asked to climb Mount Everest! Talk to your gp if you haven't already. It's hard for people to understand when they've never been through it

Hugglethatmuggle · 17/11/2023 22:03

There's an app called goblin tools it's around £2 you put a task in and the app will break down jobs into smaller more manageable tasks maybe it will help. It's good for if your overwhelmed by cleaning or stick on cleaning vids on youtube.

3sausagedogs · 17/11/2023 22:05

You need to to try getting up every day and shower or bath. Being clean will help x You need to see your Gp and maybe try walking and being out more. If you go out and come back to a messy house it makes you realise how messy it is. It’s honestly not that bad, you just need to put some music on and start with just picking stuff up and then hoover and you’d be surprised what a difference that makes x Don’t be too hard on yourself, just try one of these things and see how you feel x

quivers · 17/11/2023 22:05

I'm sorry you're finding things so hard at the moment. Flowers

The things on the stairs though - that is really dangerous, so if you can manage anything, please try to clear that.

YOU CAN DO IT!
when I feel like this i set a short timer (like 10-15 mins) and set myself a challenge to see how much I can do in this time. I’m definitely a short intense burst style person! Then also feels doable and not overwhelming and I’m always pleasantly surprised how much you can do in a little burst :)

good luck!

Janeandme · 17/11/2023 22:08

I think the fact you don’t maintain personal hygiene is more concerning, we generally can’t smell ourselves till it’s quite severe, although we like to think otherwise,

I also wonder if it’s depression and would likely encourage a gp visit, the house can be cleaned relatively easily, black bag and a hoover.

ElleLeopine · 17/11/2023 22:09

What's the bigger picture, @Shithole101?

Do you have a partner? How old are the kids? Can they help?
Do you go out to work?
Why are you only managing to wash once a week?

I don't believe that this is just about the state of the house.

Start by being kind to yourself.

Badatthis · 17/11/2023 22:10

Get a grabber stick, a bin bag, stick a song on the radio and see how much you can get done by the end of the song.

catphone · 17/11/2023 22:11

did you just scatter a few bits for the sake of a photo because that should all take 10-15 mins to clear up

Gettingbysomehow · 17/11/2023 22:11

Lol, I started painting my hallway four years ago, it's still not done.
I'm actually doing it this weekend and yes it is the shittiest job I can imagine.
My house looks like that at the end of every week and I live alone!!!
I have a large basket I shove everything in then I take it all upstairs to sort out. Sometimes I just leave it in the basket.
I work full time, I deserve time off without feeling guilty.

I've literally just bought this this morning. It's 89p on playstore.

It's amazing, I never imagined such a thing could exist.

You can try it out for free online here https://goblin.tools/

I think I have adhd, and I really struggle with big, multi step tasks. I find cleaning and tidying almost impossible. I either ignore it for far too long because I don't know where to start, or I get so bogged down in the detail that I end up spending an hour cleaning 3 inches of skirting board with a toothbrush.

Not that bad really OP! I don't think there's more than an hour there. It's so hard with kids, I completely cleaned my living room this morning and my toddler only spent a couple hours in here this evening but it looks way worse than your living room right now.

Hmm believe it or not, when people's mental health is on a downward trajectory, simple tasks can seem impossible.

OP has said she doesn't even have the will to shower. I doubt she's scattering crumbs for fun.
