I hate my new car, I feel sick

It’s my fault, I was easily talked into it by the sales person.

It’s such a basic car and I’m embarrassed by it. It’s expensive and I want to cry

I need to trade in my family SUV for a smaller hybrid. I have 45 years of driving experience and rather like the A class Mercedes. I think it's pretty and it appeals more than a Golf. Does anyone else have other ideas. I'd be looking to buy outright something about 18 months old. My non negotiables are auto (obvs if Hybrid) parking cameras and a heated driver's seat and steering wheel.

My DC certainly wouldn't have been bought a brand new A Class Merc upon passing their test.

BIossomtoes · 12/11/2023 10:29

Have a look at the Toyota Corolla hybrid @RosesAndHellebores. It’s a lovely drive and ticks all your boxes.

RosesAndHellebores · 12/11/2023 10:42

@blossomtoes, will do. Also eyeing up the Volvo XC40 but it's a bit big really and I'm moving into runaround mode. I like a bit of poke, my current car is 2L.

Our Corolla’s 1.8 and it goes like shit off a stick in sports mode - frankly it terrifies me and I never use it!

I've just been reading up @blossomtoes. It looks like a possibility.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 12/11/2023 12:02

People are literally clinging on to what I said about a first car thing, but no you don’t bother to read that I didn’t even get a first car and instead car shared with my dad.

Yes, we read that bit too. And? The fact that you didn't get a first car as a new driver (big deal - nor do lots of people) makes no difference to your attitude that a £30k Mercedes is a basic car suitable for a first car.

As for people saying it's jealousy... I really don't think so. I have no interest in cars and would never think of buying one that's not second-hand. It's just transport to me. I don't care what make or colour it is aa long as it's big enough, not too expensive to run and it gets me from A to B.

Passepartoute · 12/11/2023 15:25

getinthedust · 11/11/2023 13:04

I think it’s the size and I’m very low to the ground, I thought maybe I should have got something bigger like an SUV.

Why is that embarrassing?

getinthedust · 12/11/2023 15:36

WrongSwanson · 12/11/2023 01:27

It makes sense you were poor growing up, as it's terribly nouveau riche to be this obsessed with cars as a status symbol

Edited

I wasn’t poor growing up at all. You think because my dad didn’t automatically buy me a car that’s me growing up poor? 🙈 what an absolute reach.

Who said anything about jealous. I’m absolutely flabbergasted that people see a Mercedes as me bragging or something to be jealous oh.

The jealousy on this post!!

Surely OP is allowed to regret something she spent her money on? Her money that she earned fair and square?
Just because not everyone can afford a Mercedes doesn’t mean she’s any less entitled to like hers…WTF?!

This thread is actually wild.

You are actually unbelievable. The worst kind of spoilt brat.

There are parents out there who can't feed their children. There are children dying in wars and famine. There are people homeless.

There are people struggling with discrimination of race, religion, sexual orientation, age etc.

There are people out there in abusive relationships, trapped in a never-ending cycle of violence and control...

There are people dealing with endless suffering. With disability, with disabled children, with no hope.

Tip of a massive iceberg of pain, suffering, exclusion and loss.

And you are whinging because you picked the 'wrong' expensive, luxury car!!!! Cry me a fucking river!!! It's despicable.

Oh but you don’t know anything about me to assume I’ve never suffered any of the above, or what I’ve done to help.

I hope you go on to say this on every thread that people shouldn’t complain about anything ever in their life because there’s worse things in the world.

You'll get used to it OP. I went from a high SUV to a low slung car. It's weird to begin and I felt a bit unsafe but you get used to it really quickly. Give it a bit more time. It's a nice car

Spangers · 12/11/2023 15:54

OP if you’d have come on and said you were worried you’d made a mistake because you’ve spent a lot of money on a car and now you don’t think it’s right for xyz practical reasons you would have received actual helpful replies.

Whining like a spoilt brat about it not being fancy enough for your perceived superior status is what has evoked the vitriol. If you can’t see that then you need to get some perspective.

Thank you, I hope so. I’ve checked my contract and I’m still in my cooling off period so I’m giving it one last drive tomorrow to work to make my make up.

Fair enough but .. 16 pages of it? Seems kind of overkill.

What do you think of the GLA @getinthedust? It seems to me that that might be more what you're loking for?

sarahh96 · 12/11/2023 16:02

@getinthedust I did the same actually. I took mine for one last drive, put my playlist on....loud! And just drove around. Something clicked and by the time I got home I'd changed my mind. Good luck, if it doesn't suit you after tomorrow take it back. No point forcing it!

SoMuchSimpler · 12/11/2023 16:05

Personally I like the Mazda 3 Sedan for a smallish car - you hardly ever see any and it looks fantastic.

Edit: They've (sensibly) renamed it Mazda 3 Saloon.

Hummusanddipdip · 12/11/2023 16:06

This is mumsnet, people take personal slights to innocuous things. As pp said, if you'd approached it differently you'd have got different replies. But what's done is done and you've got am audience of thousands of people, so although it feels like a pile on, you've probably got only a handful posting multiple times, but a lot of single commenters too.

Personally I love my A Class. It was DHs choice of car, I was happy as long as it was dark green, comfy to drive and I could get the pushchair in the boot. Everything else was him.

I still stand by my question of what parent is buying it for a teen as a first car. However I am willing to accept that my social circle is very different to others, and I still see a Mercedes as a "grown up" car. My first car was a 1997 clio that I bought myself. And I still see first cars as Ford, Renault, Citreon etc your small hatchback runarounds.

If the height is an issue to you, absolutely take advantage of the cooling off period and go into the dealership and talk to them. Stand your ground if they try and talk you round. Tell them exactly why you aren't happy and tell them what you want to do, they'll be more helpful if you know what you want too.

Thanks! Just hoping it’s a simple process, but I guess that’s the entire point of “cooling off”. Hope you ended up with something you loved.

True but one post can set the tone of the entire thread and there was no saving this trainwreck and MN loves a pile on.

I don’t have a social circle of parents buying their children Mercedes. I (maybe foolishly) went on TikTok to look a different models as I’d prefer a short video than looking at images and it just seemed popular with teens/early 20s so I wrongly assumed it was a car maybe suited ti being someone’s first 🤷‍♀️

I think most hybrids use the electric part to increase acceleration when you floor it. So a 1.8 hybrid would feel livelier than a 2.0 petrol.

I don't know if that's the case with Toyotas mind. I immediately thought 'Corolla' from your first post though.

Shade17 · 12/11/2023 16:20

Don’t be silly, if the performance of something that slow terrifies you, I’m not sure you should be driving!

It accelerates incredibly fast in sports mode. It’s absolutely fine in normal mode. Unless you’ve actually driven the bloody thing maybe you should keep your entirely irrelevant opinion to yourself. Fuck’s sake MN is so bloody rude these days.
