I hate my new car, I feel sick

It’s my fault, I was easily talked into it by the sales person.

It’s such a basic car and I’m embarrassed by it. It’s expensive and I want to cry

That would be the 1.6 diesel I believe, the 2 ltr AMG is a merc engine but nice not so subtle dig.

The 1.3 petrol. The PP said it was an AMG Line so it doesn’t have the 2ltr AMG engine.

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 11/11/2023 17:15

I have a VW Golf I no longer need. The cam belt has gone but fix that it will be great. ULEZ compliant. Might be 23 years old but it has a tape player! Bet your car doesn’t have one of those…

So out of interest who made the engine in my old one then? It was the A250 AMG line

WonderingWanda · 11/11/2023 17:23

You feel sick and embarrassed because your car is too basic? Ffs, get a grip. If you don't like it sell it and buy something more show off worthy if that's what makes you feel better. It's just a car not a life changing mistake.

crumblingschools · 11/11/2023 17:23

You really need to read the room. How many parents buy a Merc for their 18yo's first car

It always amazes me how many of my friends get talked into cars by the salesman.

When I am buying a car, I always do my research first and decide exactly what make, model, spec etc I’m interested in before I even set foot in a showroom. Not influenced by salesmen at all, I go and buy the car I have decided I want.

Passepartoute · 11/11/2023 17:27

For goodness sake, don't go for an SUV if you don't want to look "Common" and have people sneer at you. Around DD's school they're a bit of a joke.

It's not your car that's embarrassing but the fact you came on here complaining about not liking a £30k car you just bought - thats embarrassing

TeslaTwat · 11/11/2023 17:37

@GentlemanJay really? Thank you! It is the AMG line and it looks really nice. Only concern is the interior size as I have a daughter who seems to think only a limo is big enough.

TeslaTwat · 11/11/2023 17:38

Shade17 · 11/11/2023 16:57

AMG Line. Best car I've ever had. Automatic. I'd never drive a manual again. It's as smooth as silk

Is it the one with engine out of a Renault van?

Any merc engine under 2.0l is now designed by Renault. Has been that way for a few years now - around 2018/19 I think.

getinthedust · 11/11/2023 12:44

It’s a Mercedes A Class and I just think it’s basic and a car a parent would buy a child who just passed their test.

Fuck yeah that IS embarrassing. No wonder you’re upset 🙄

TeslaTwat · 11/11/2023 17:40

@SofiYol was it an actual AMG? The one I am looking at is AMG line premium but it's also on the exec which looks exactly the same so I don't know what the £1500 is for.

I have a tape player too! My car is “only” 21 years old though…

My parents got an automatic mini years ago and I said that they looked like Noddy and Big Ears. My Mum wouldn't go in it again, Dad couldn't care less.

That's a bit unkind.

TheSilentSister · 11/11/2023 17:50

@Maireas - they recalled the day many times over numerous years and found it really funny. I was just highlighting how different people find different things embarrassing and like OP, my Mum couldn't get over it. They had a 2nd car so it wasn't a problem for Mum.

SabrinaThwaite · 11/11/2023 17:50

Swap it for one of these - it’s got a high up driving position, it’s still a Merc and you can winch yourself across the Waitrose car park and tip the shopping straight onto the doorstep when you get home. A practical classic, what’s not to like?

My first car was a £400 Vauxhall nova 😂

Mine was a Metro - special edition Rio ! It was about 10 years old and had a choke - I was 32 when I passed my test so I didn't even get it off my parents.

Don't! My dad wants one of these!

GoodnightGentlemen · 11/11/2023 17:52

I’ll swap you for my 08 zafira if you like?

The passenger side window goes down every time you start the engine, sometimes it’s possible to lock the doors; sometimes not, and the heating only work on full blast or nothing… but I like to think that adds character.

CesareBorgia · 11/11/2023 17:57

It's normal to feel some doubts when you've spent a lot of money on something, especially something you use every day like a car. Give yourself some time to get used to it. If you really don't like it after a few months, see about trading it in for something else.

GirlOfTudor · 11/11/2023 18:01

You're embarrassed by a mercedes??
And you think parents are buying their children mercedes as a first car??
What planet do you live on??? 😂😂😂

I think it was AMG line yes, best car I’ve ever had. Just wanted the ambient lighting 😂

The Times motoring correspondent disagrees

Obvious rivals to the A-Class hatchback include the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series and Volkswagen Golf, though buyers might also be tempted to take a look at the DS 4, and perhaps even some of the smaller crossovers and SUVs from premium brands, such as the Lexus UX.

@supersonicginandtonic i had a posh one, Vauxhall Viva costing £700 which I paid for myself at 19. But the starter motor was faulty and I had to park in facing downhill so I could bump start it. Happy days!

OP has led a sheltered life methinks.

Was it covered in rust?

But better than a 29 bus?
