Some people do. I mentioned on another post a while back that apparently, Phillipinos do so. One of our porters has a room decorated and constant Christmas music going since September! My local Phillipino cafe has Christmas muzak playing and two other Phillipino porters say a local cafe near them has decorations up. Surprisingly the Phillipino families living in my hospital accommodation do not seem to have put anything up yet!

Common people is what my Mother would have said.

Thank goodness people don't talk like that anymore

winniethedoo · 09/11/2023 19:26

I think I'd find it really depressing to get up for work now, and see the lovely tree and decorations which are just reminding me it's still bloody ages til Christmas.

I have mine up for a maximum of 10 days and take it down on Boxing Day, I’m sick of it in less than 2 weeks! I can’t imagine having it up for longer than that, it drives me mad! Cumbersome (because the rest of my family can’t seem to choose a sensible sized one) and blocks light from the bay. And the front room feels too busy. However it’s a fun tradition and I love how much the kids enjoy decorating it etc etc.
Not for me, but in someone else’s house it’s not bothering me at all. I might think you’re a bit mad though!

TheKnittedCharacter · 09/11/2023 19:53

Much as I don’t get putting the tree up in November, I equally don’t understand taking it down on Boxing Day.

The festive period has just begun!

Don’t you people have guests over for Christmas food and drinks in the days between Christmas and New Year? I’d find it odd to visit friends on say, boxing day and they’d already taken the tree etc down.

Chipsahoy · 09/11/2023 19:57

Why does it matter? Seriously how does it personally affect anyone else?

I decorate each season. So I still have autumn decs up but I have put up fairly lights in my fur trees and on the shed as I do every year from clocks changing (live rurally and it’s dark!). I will slowly add Christmas decor after thanksgiving and be fully decked out by early December.

Do what makes you happy. Don’t judge other people for being different to you.

PurpleSky09 · 09/11/2023 21:11

I'll be putting mine up in November, not sure when exactly, but I like to get the most out of it. Not quite sure how to explain it but I feel it's a waste of time money and effort if it all only comes out for a couple of weeks!

I do take it all down before new year. Not because I'm sick of it, but because I like to start the new year with a house that's back to normal.

I think providing instant gratification actually takes away the pleasure of excited anticipation. Especially in children. I really enjoyed reading 'Wintering' by Katherine May last year. It's all about actually taking a breath and enjoying the actual day/week/month that you're living in. Learning to enjoy an Autumnal day in October with nary a thought about Bonfire Night or Christmas. I've just started reading 'Slow Seasons' by Rosie Steers and it's so beautiful and wise.

There's a line from a poem 'Everything I do, I rush through, so I can go on to do something else' and it fills me with horror.

@Bookist Lovely post.

LesLavandes · 09/11/2023 22:41

I think it was during the covid lockdowns they did go up early to bring cheer and not much else to do? Now I think it’s just become the norm

TheNestedIf · 09/11/2023 23:54

People / businesses can put decorations up in October or November if they want, but I don't like it. By the time Christmas comes around I'm bored with it all, and despite that I also become used to it, so when it's all gone by 12th Night after over 2 months of lights and sparkles, it makes January feel even greyer.

Went to a bar the other night which already has a tree up, and it immediately made me all "Bah, humbug!".

KnowYouAreLoved · 10/11/2023 07:12

@Bookist that's precisely how I feel. I know I rush through life. I don't want to.

I hear a lot of people talking about this gloomy and dreary time of the year. I don't get that at all. November is beautiful! The turning of the leaves, the cold crisp mornings, lovely soups etc. I'm happy to enjoy November first.

Deathraystare · 10/11/2023 07:34

As far taking the stuff down, my birthday is on 2nd January so when I lived at home (and parents were alive) I used to insist the stuff stayed up until after my birthday!

I am just the same and getting more so as I get older. I love the Autumn, it's my favourite season, and I want to thoroughly enjoy it first before looking forward to Christmas. I really try not to countenance anything Christmassy until Dec. 1st, and traditionally, we don't put our tree and decorations up until the 9th of December.

ChristmasBingle · 10/11/2023 10:22

I've put mine up in November since I had my own place, so 20 years.

And have always had the same comments, some people say it's too early, some people do the same.

I don't think it's new. Just that people tend to think about what they do and think that's the norm and always has been.

And people like to indulge in the annual ritual of complaining about Xmas related things. Like all the people who say "Xmas starts too early in the shops now". I remember my Dad complaining about that in the 80s 😊

wereonthemarket · 10/11/2023 10:40

Everything christmasy feels earlier. The Xmas adverts and movies on tv etc feel so much earlier than say 20 years ago.

Christmas was December. It's how November and December.

I'll

Ah well, see, that's different.

Cats must be obeyed. 😂

Yes Flax Floof needs his tree, a second robin has been captured. But he's a little unsure on the Christmas pudding.

I've noticed a couple of neighbours have put their Christmas trees and decorations up over the last few days. My local supermarket has a tree up in the entrance.
I've never put a Christmas tree or any decorations up, but I can't be bothered about anyone else putting theirs up or when.
Each to their own.

Hahhaha, aw Floof is just adorable! ❤

That Christmas pudding is really cute 😄

Vettrianofan · 12/11/2023 07:20

I have noticed after Halloween it's time for many locally to get the tree up. What?!

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 12/11/2023 08:39

Arrived home today and next door neighbours have all their windows flashing like mad, the whole house decorated. It is ridiculous and much too soon. Understand if some put their tree up inside as it does brighten up the place but for me it will be December and not before.
So many now put it all up day after Halloween, just ridiculous.

Gooseysgirl · 12/11/2023 08:40

Boofay · 08/11/2023 20:35

Because life feels a bit miserable at the moment and Christmas decorations give people a little joy. Mine aren't up yet, but planning on starting during the last weekend of November.

Exactly this. I haven't put up the tree but I've put up some twinkly fairy lights in the living room and decorated the mantle piece.

sneakymumalert · 12/11/2023 08:44

I have noticed that those who stick it up in November usually take it down on Boxing day because "they're sick of it"

BUT the world is an absolute shit hole at the moment. So I believe that people ought to do whatever they want.

After all - we're lucky to live in a chill country where we can celebrate whatever we want, whenever we want.
