Yes, and it makes me feel very old and Scroogey. My family used to do it about a week before Christmas, and my grandparents' one went up on Christmas Eve. There would be many raised eyebrows at the 1st December crew, but that is normal now, and November is becoming more common. Bah! Humbug!

Sartre · 08/11/2023 20:34

Yep, some people put it up as soon as Halloween is over which is crazy.

35965a · 08/11/2023 20:35

I’ve noticed more of my friends/acquaintances do now too. One said today she’s putting it up this weekend. She never used to, we used to be flat mates so I know she would always wait until December before. If it makes people happy then it’s OK though!

I think it's utterly ridiculous and I do judge people for it. I love Christmas decorations, but part of that love is because they are so fleeting.

Boofay · 08/11/2023 20:35

Because life feels a bit miserable at the moment and Christmas decorations give people a little joy. Mine aren't up yet, but planning on starting during the last weekend of November.

Bloody hell, that's mad. Ours (just the 2 of of here now) goes up on 23rd December! We take it down on 3rd January, after the family - kids, grandkids - have all been round

casuarinatree · 08/11/2023 20:36

I answered a survey the other day which had the Christmas season as being 1 Nov - 31 Dec.

I rolled my eyes.

SauvignonBlanche · 08/11/2023 20:46

The threads moaning about Christmas trees get earlier every year. 🌲 😆

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 08/11/2023 20:49

I noticed one was up in my area earlier. Definitely the earliest I've seen one.

MissyB1 · 08/11/2023 20:52

It’s madness they will be bored of it by Christmas Day!

Definitely takes the magic of Christmas away for me. It's yet another bane of plastics (the trees) that make this sort of crap possible. It goes very well with the decorations and presents from Temu. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

But hey, as far as bad life choices go, it's not the worst one 😁

JingsMahBucket · 08/11/2023 20:57

Let people enjoy things FFS. It’s dark outside and the twinkling lights may/will help brighten some people’s moods over the next couple months. Ya bunch of Scroogey Nosey Parkers! 🎄

Butteredtoast55 · 08/11/2023 20:58

These same people will be moaning that Christmas goes on forever and will be sick of it by December.
What infuriates me as a real tree buyer is that they are being sold far too early and you feel you'd better get one before they are sold out and that just feeds the demand to sell them earlier.
Our local nursery used to sell them from the second week of December onwards. Now they start before the end of November.

Butteredtoast55 · 08/11/2023 20:59

@JingsMahBucket to be fair, I will be getting the fairy lights out soon 😄

TheDandyLion · 08/11/2023 21:00

It's a season not a day, let them get on with it.

That much is true. I remember my Grandpa getting one in too early (Two weeks early rather than a few days before Christmas) and to my Grandma's dismay, the tree looked like something out of Chernobyl by the Christmas Eve 😂

BeauxHeaux · 08/11/2023 21:05

The earlier the shops sell the decorations, the earlier people will buy them. Joe Public is playing right into their hands.

muddyford · 08/11/2023 21:10

One house in the road has been plastered with Christmas lights since last Friday, 3 November.

Yes, it’s a PITA.

I aim to put a real tree up the weekend before Christmas and keep it until Twelfth night.

They’re nearly all gone by then.

Lizzieregina · 08/11/2023 21:14

As a child we did it on December (feast of the immaculate conception-Catholic thing). In the US it’s right after TG for a lot of people. I’m still closer to Dec 8 usually.

We have full outside displays here though this past week! Because the weather is still mild.

😂

We got one in the first week of December in 2020 because we were so depressed by all that was going on. Never again, between a baby, cat and having the heating on loads because of maternity leave it was a stick come Xmas day.

I do get people saying ‘life is shit and it cheers us up’ but I don’t see that changing any time soon so there have to be some boundaries…

Ifailed · 08/11/2023 21:17

Why are you bothered about it OP?

CloudsNeverStayTheyAlwaysGoAway · 08/11/2023 21:20

It is earlier these days. Since Covid it seems.

I much prefer it to Halloween decor.

Indeed, leaving decorations up until Twelfth Night - i.e. the whole of the Christmas season - is a rarity now. Because they go up so early. A couple of decades ago you rarely heard of people clearing everything away on Boxing Day, but these days the instant gratification of decorating in November leads to rapid boredom. I even read on here last year of someone taking their tree down immediately after finishing their Christmas Dinner! It's so depressing.
