Is it just me or are people putting up the Christmas tree earlier and earlier?

Three people in our street have theirs up already
It's the 8th of November
Has anyone noticed it's getting earlier and earlier ?

I just drove past three houses with theirs up which I think is crazy early.

We have a green locally with a huge tree and apparently that’s getting switched on on the 25th this year. Previously they’ve always done it on the 1st but they seem to have decided that’s too late this year. I’m a bit disappointed.

Sux2buthen · 08/11/2023 21:28

I think that if something makes someone happy and it has no effect on others then crack on and leave them to it. No reason why not at all and if it causes others to feel negative that's really not the happy peoples problem

Yes when I was a child in the 80s we always put it up around 15th December, and so did most people we knew. Now nearly everyone seems to do it in November! It seems less special if it's up too early for weeks on end.

BetiYeti · 08/11/2023 21:33

I know someone who has put all their decs up. I will be putting mine up on the last November weekend. Earlier than ever for me, but I have to say that I enjoy every minute of having the decorations up. I grew up in a house where the tree was put up quite late.

RandomUsernameHere · 08/11/2023 21:34

Not close to putting the tree up yet, but I prefer to put it up early and take it down early (I'm sure that makes me frightfully common). The reason is preferring the build up to Christmas to the period after Christmas. The DCs are all excited before Christmas so it makes sense to make the most of the run up to it. After Christmas they're not bothered about having the tree up for 12 nights.

Crikeyalmighty · 08/11/2023 21:34

When we lived in Copenhagen many people had them up from 1st dec to mid February!!! Street Xmas lights too were up most of Jan and feb

Yep, that meme applies to Christmas trees. And drugs.

WinteryWonderland · 08/11/2023 21:36

I'm very judgy about this 😂🙋‍♀️ it's waaay too early. Anything before December is daft imo

TheKnittedCharacter · 08/11/2023 21:37

I don't know anyone in RL that puts their tree up early. And this time of year is just daft. And utterly classless.

LoveBluey · 08/11/2023 21:39

It's not for me, I'd be sick of looking at them and it wouldn't feel so special.
But it's up to them I suppose. The only thing I really dislike is people taking them down on Boxing Day. I tend to take them down straight after new years but I think they should be up for the days in between Xmas and new year.

TentChristmas · 08/11/2023 21:40

We’ve started with the outside lights and will do inside gradually next week. Life is shit, fairy lights are lovely, I don’t get fed up of it and can’t imagine putting it up on the 24th

Toesaresoweird · 08/11/2023 21:42

I saw my first one tonight. A Christmas tree in someone's garden and all lit up, looked like the Blackpool illuminations. Batshit doesn't quite cover it.

Let people enjoy things FFS. It’s dark outside and the twinkling lights may/will help brighten some people’s moods over the next couple months. Ya bunch of Scroogey Nosey Parkers! 🎄

I agree. Mind your own business unless they’re asking you to pay their electricity bill. I wonder if they’re going up earlier to in an attempt to make yet another weekend spent staying in more exciting/homely because everyone is feeling the pinch…

Terfosaurus · 08/11/2023 21:43

I don't care when other people put their tree up.

Unless they then spend the next 6 weeks telling me I'm boring/the grinch/scrooge/miserable because mine isn't up.
Especially when those same people then make out like I'm really weird for keeping mine up until 12th night "ugh. I can't believe your tree's still up. I like to start the new year with a clean tidy house"
Twats.

TheresaCrowd · 08/11/2023 21:43

Ours goes up around Dec 1st but I've noticed particularly since the pandemic, some are going up earlier and earlier.

I don't know why so many people moan about it though. It doesn't affect them and it's nice to see a bit of bright cheer.

Robinkitty · 08/11/2023 21:44

I’m not actually having a Christmas Day this years so I’m making the most of the run up. Tree will be last weekend of November. It used to go up in December but since becoming divorced I can do what I like so I shall and it will make me and my kids happy.
decorations get taken down on Boxing Day regardless of when the tree goes up.

My neighbour had her tree up until the summer. I think she hit June and thought - well, I’m half way to Christmas so fuck it; I might as well keep it up now. 😂

IClaudine · 08/11/2023 21:46

I wouldn't put them up this early but I don't judge. I am not sure how it is "classless" to have them up now. Christmas decorations are inherently tacky, really.

Loubelle70 · 08/11/2023 21:47

I love christmas. I dont put my tree up etc until 12 days before. Always. However, if people want the pretties up im cool with it.

seeyounexttuesluv · 08/11/2023 21:48

Yep mine went up 1st November because I've had a shit year and wanted to cheer myself up with sparkley tinsel and fairy lights.

RamblingRosiePosy · 08/11/2023 21:49

The early dark winter nights can be a trigger for some people suffering from low mood, a few twinkle lights and decorations can make all the difference and remind them there is actually something to look forward to.

JenniferBooth · 08/11/2023 21:49

I think people might be on to something with the fact it seems to be since Covid.

I forgot to take one set of lights down in 2020. When the pandemic hit I started putting then on at night. They were really comforting. I hope your lights do the same for you.

Crikeyalmighty · 08/11/2023 21:53

@Kiki880 in Denmark or UK??
