Also cannot understand people who take it down a day or 2 after Christmas. Tradition means meant to be up until the 6th is it? Couldn't imagine no tree for New Year's.

Startingagainandagain · 12/11/2023 08:52

So what?

I really don't see the issue with people doing something that makes them feel happy and cheerful...

I did my tree really early this year.

I have just moved into a new house and there had been lots of issues with more repairs being needed than previously thought resulting in a lot of anxiety and stress.

Doing my little tree was just another way to finally make this house my own when I moved in and bring even more cheer to the place.

You also need to remember that times have been and are hard for a lot of people so doing anything positive, even just putting up Christmas decorations, is welcome.

I think people who take the time to 'judge' others for that really need to get a more interesting life...

KnowYouAreLoved · 12/11/2023 09:25

Lots of people don't see early decorations as a 'positive' though. I think that's the point. It might suit you but honestly it totally stresses me out to see them early and I don't think I'm alone.

Yes. I think it started with covid.
Having friends up in America, I always had the impression that people here put their tree up a few days before Christmas- say around the 20th. Whereas in the States it was the first week of December, with a few putting it up the weekend after Thanksgiving. But they tended to take it down not long after Christmas Day, certainly down by New Years.
But definitely seems a trend to get it up here in November now.

Forgotmylogindetails · 12/11/2023 15:04

we Don’t know anyone’s circumstances so let’s not criticise other people.

I’ve got a friend with theirs up it might be their mums last Christmas …

Another forces friend won’t be here before Christmas again so is doing it now.

I’ve got another friend who just did it because they wanted too.

you do your house and let others do theirs.

Much as I don’t get putting the tree up in November, I equally don’t understand taking it down on Boxing Day.

The festive period has just begun!

Don’t you people have guests over for Christmas food and drinks in the days between Christmas and New Year? I’d find it odd to visit friends on say, boxing day and they’d already taken the tree etc down.

Exactly… to not even have it up on Boxing Day evening 😢

@Bookist that's precisely how I feel. I know I rush through life. I don't want to.

I hear a lot of people talking about this gloomy and dreary time of the year. I don't get that at all. November is beautiful! The turning of the leaves, the cold crisp mornings, lovely soups etc. I'm happy to enjoy November first.

And the misty mornings… it can be a lovely fairly mild month

Nanalisa60 · 12/11/2023 18:30

I think first week In December is a perfect time to put up the decorations, it takes a whole day to do mine, so I like them up for the whole of December, they usually come Down on the 5/6th January.

The first tree I saw up this year in a house was on the 30th October

I think it's sad that the only thing people can apparently think of to do to cheer themselves up is put some fairy lights up and festoon their house with clutter. I really hate the modern trend of putting everything up in November, then taking it all down on Boxing Day. Christmas is the start of Christmas, not the end! I like seeing stuff in the shops, but my tree doesn't go up until mid December (which is early - when I was a child we put it up on 23rd December). I do judge.

This is exactly how I feel. Find other ways to cheer yourself up!!

Fizbosshoes · 12/11/2023 18:40

A fb acquaintance was doing theirs today, anything before December feels early to me...not that it affects me in any way!
We normally do ours early- mid December....and DH usually moans that is too early!

Fizbosshoes · 12/11/2023 18:45

They were playing Christmas music in tkmaxx last weekend and I felt really sorry for staff having to listen to it for nearly 2 months!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/11/2023 19:10

I think the idea of having a few warm cream fairy lights around in November is lovely. I sometimes do that. I also have a salt lamp which I use year round and gives a lovely glow. But I will always believe that Christmas stuff before December is crackers (see what I did there?) - sure, people can do what they want, but I will never understand why they might want to put Christmas stuff up before the 1st December. I do try to judge silently though, in real life.

Oblomov23 · 12/11/2023 19:15

Yes. Seems so. Really gets on my nerves.

Waxlyrically · 12/11/2023 19:55

I really try to see it as each to their own but I find the rushing ahead to the next thing really stressful. What is wrong with just enjoying the Autumn? When times are difficult a crisp autumn walk can be just as joy bringing as filling the house with lights and glitter.

The reason I find it a bit sad is because I see it as a symptom of people’s inability to just wait. It seems to be part of the instant gratification culture we have and the rush to look for the next thing, spurred on by retailers.
similar thing is happening with Halloween decorations - used to be for a couple of days around the event but now many folk have them out the whole month!

Why do you care though? Does it matter, really?

Why do we need to delay gratification? It's just Christmas lights Confused

Similar to this - I put mine up last night. Last year we were in the middle of viewings and house sale hell so had to really do a quite understated Christmas in terms of decorations and the amount of stuff the kids got as we'd had to store a lot of stuff to stage the house to sell - so this year we're making up for things and we've got a lovely bigger house to decorate as well.

Claysta · 13/11/2023 09:35

Was coming out of Waterloo last night on the train and saw quite a few in houses/flats all lit up. I did get a cosy warm feeling! Mine won’t be up until early/mid Dec ..

Vettrianofan · 13/11/2023 21:56

One of my neighbours has her tree up. Yesterday. This happens every year.

HipHouse · 13/11/2023 22:02

Genuine question for posters who have said they judge someone for putting the tree up early…what exactly are you judging them for?
I don’t get why it bothers people? The tree isn’t in your house 🤣

flinginflangin · 14/11/2023 10:34

My friend puts hers up mid November because she says it makes her happy. I can understand why it cheers the place up but I don't see why it has to be done early. Why can't it make her just as happy being put up in early December? She's had all year without it up, why can't she wait a couple more weeks?
I don't judge people who do it, I actually think it's an admirable trait to be able to do what you want without worrying what others think of you. I actually enjoy going for walks and counting how many early ones I see!
I just prefer to enjoy November (my favourite month 🍁) and then start to feel Christmassy in December. I can get as much joy from looking forward to it as I can from actually doing it.

user1483387154 · 14/11/2023 10:52

I dont put mine up until mid december, this year due to cost of electric it might be even later. However I like seeing decorations whenever people put them up they make me smile.

Boofay · 14/11/2023 15:13

Putting mine up on the 25th Nov and they're not coming down until the 6th Jan!
I bloody love Christmas and I love the house at Christmas. Christmas decorations party poopers, begone!

Is it just me or are people putting up the Christmas tree earlier and earlier?
