Three people in our street have theirs up already
It's the 8th of November
Has anyone noticed it's getting earlier and earlier ?

Before Remembrance is just so inappropriate. During Advent is a reasonable confusion.

Christmas is from Christmas Eve until Twelfth Night or Candlemas,

@Kiki880 I like the sound of her!! Love a batty neighbour.

When I was a child in the 80s it was extremely rare to spot any tree or lights in houses even in early December. People tended to stick to the traditions then ie 12 days before.

It's crazy. A Christmas tree should go up on 24th December, as before then it's still Advent. Then it stays up until Twelfth Night.

I'm very judgy about this 😂🙋‍♀️ it's waaay too early. Anything before December is daft imo

Exactly !
The tree is meant to be up during Advent. Advent does not start early November. Ridiculous

TheresaCrowd · 08/11/2023 23:19

And some people think yorkshire pudding should only ever be eaten with roast beef 🤷‍♀️

Live and let live.

Nothing 'crazy' or 'ridiculous' about it.

😂

We got one in the first week of December in 2020 because we were so depressed by all that was going on. Never again, between a baby, cat and having the heating on loads because of maternity leave it was a stick come Xmas day.

I do get people saying ‘life is shit and it cheers us up’ but I don’t see that changing any time soon so there have to be some boundaries…

You live by your self-imposed boundaries and let folks enjoy their early trees.

Mydpisgrumpierthanyours · 08/11/2023 23:27

It doesn't bother me what other people do.
I'm impressed they haven't got sick of them by December 1st and put them back in the loft. We don't have the biggest house so a tree just gives us no space so having it up for ages is just a pita.
That's before you have to extract a cat from it every 20 minutes.

I believe that as you got older life as an adult just generally sucks...so if pretty lights and trees bring you happiness then go for it!

My tree makes my girls and I so happy 😊

The threads moaning about Christmas trees get earlier every year. 🌲 😆

🤣🤣🤣

Changingmynameyetagain · 08/11/2023 23:42

We go to a local Christmas tree farm and chop our own tree down, we’ll probably go on the 9th of December any earlier and the thing will be dead and sad looking by Christmas Day.

I possibly might put up the outside lights the week before but certainly not in November. I always take my tree down on New Year’s Eve or day, it’s my birthday the week after and I like to have my house back to normal before.

Britneyfan · 08/11/2023 23:53

Partly it’s because of artificial trees being more common now (and I also think there is something in life feeling pretty miserable these days so people have started to do whatever brings them a little bit of joy!).

Also different households are different in how the Christmas season works out for them. I will put mine up as soon as I can get my hands on a real tree this year, because 1. My son and I spend Christmas with family in another part of the U.K. and often leave our own household by the 19th/20th Dec for the Christmas holidays, so need to enjoy it for a bit before then and 2. Because that’s always a super busy time of year for me work wise and a time where I can struggle with depression and motivation as well so if I leave it too long there is a real risk it just doesn’t happen at all.

NotebookNell · 08/11/2023 23:56

The reason I find it a bit sad is because I see it as a symptom of people’s inability to just wait. It seems to be part of the instant gratification culture we have and the rush to look for the next thing, spurred on by retailers.
similar thing is happening with Halloween decorations - used to be for a couple of days around the event but now many folk have them out the whole month!

SweetBirdsong · 08/11/2023 23:57

Yep. Each to their own, but any time before December 1st is bonkers IMO. Me and DH will be putting ours up around 7th-8th December.

SweetBirdsong · 08/11/2023 23:59

@Whatintheworldgirl your tree is lovely, but it's the 8th of November. Confused Christmas is almost 7 weeks away. I would be sick of the sight of the tree by then. Do you have all your decorations up too?

smilesup · 09/11/2023 00:00

Anyone that has a tree up in November is a dick. That is all I have to say.

Lifestooshort71 · 09/11/2023 06:42

Our artificial tree usually goes up ten days before Christmas. This year it's going up 1st December as we've had a shitty year, the weather is grim and we're fed up with the dank and dark November. We want some sparkle and fairy lights to cheer us all up (but it does usually go away just after Boxing Day). Anyway, it's our tree and nobody outside can see it so we'll just do us if that's ok.

cravingmilkshake · 09/11/2023 07:00

I love Christmas but I do wait until the beginning of December. (However I think the way it falls and plans etc it looks like we will buy the tree at the end of November)

Children are exhausted, parents are exhausted, no money, no motivation because life is a bit pants for a lot of people . Some people like finding the joy in things and if that's Christmas decorations early, then I couldn't get mad about it.

lollipoprainbow · 09/11/2023 07:02

I personally don't get the rush to go from one event to the next. Our Halloween decs are still up! My tree never goes up before mid December.

FedUpMumof10YO · 09/11/2023 07:17

Mine is going up 18 Nov.

Last year I didn't particularly enjoy Christmas. This year, I am going to. 🎄🎅🏻

Fifthtimelucky · 09/11/2023 07:21

Butteredtoast55 · 08/11/2023 20:58

These same people will be moaning that Christmas goes on forever and will be sick of it by December.
What infuriates me as a real tree buyer is that they are being sold far too early and you feel you'd better get one before they are sold out and that just feeds the demand to sell them earlier.
Our local nursery used to sell them from the second week of December onwards. Now they start before the end of November.

Absolutely agree with this. A few years I went out in mid December to buy a tree and had to go to about 3 different garden centres before I could find anything the right size.

I now buy in the first weekend of December and leave the tree outside in a bucket for a couple of weeks.

BoobyDazzler · 09/11/2023 07:25

I’m all for the fairly lights but the early trees feel wrong to me, there’s no way they can keep their Christmas magic for the best part of two months.

That said, life is shitty at the moment for lots of people so who am i to judge. Whatever makes a person happy.

SecondUsername4me · 09/11/2023 07:26

Yes. Probably because there is so little joy in the world at the moment.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 09/11/2023 07:29

We saw a house with full decs up.
We thought it was ridiculous to be up so early. Kind of makes me think the people doing it are just a bit stupid. It doesn't spread joy it just makes them look ridiculous

DinosApple · 09/11/2023 07:41

Haha we discussed putting ours up early this year OP, and we will. It's going up on the 10th December.

That's the earliest I'll consider it though. There's a family birthday in November and Christmas intrudes enough already.
