Is it just me or are people putting up the Christmas tree earlier and earlier?

I think this is one of the first years that people have decorated for Halloween early too. We have a few bats and webs that come out on the day but some houses have the full works for weeks in advance!
I think some people think they are living in a department store

lemmein · 08/11/2023 22:08

I normally put mine up a week before Christmas, more out if laziness than anything else, but I'm going to do it really early this year. I'm planning on having a Christmas movie night with the (adult) kids and grandkids in a week or 2 so I'll do it then.

Fuck it, it's cold and miserable, I want sparkly lights!!!

I've had a fabulous new porch built this year and I can reach the guttering with my ladder so I have strung up some fairy lights already!
Warm white and a gentle slow glow!
DP said "how embarrassing"
DD grinned from ear to ear and said she loves them!

I will however wait till the 1st weekend of Dec for the rest!

ssd · 08/11/2023 22:09

Dh seen 2 houses fully decorated with outside xmas lights yesterday

If it cheers folk up why not

I don't know anyone in RL that puts their tree up early. And this time of year is just daft. And utterly classless.

Righto Hyacinth

Orangeslush · 08/11/2023 22:11

There so many bad things happening right now and for last few years I think people need to grab onto anything that makes them happy.

I don’t like them up too early myself

FitAt50 · 08/11/2023 22:11

Common people is what my Mother would have said.

ABetterBitOfButter · 08/11/2023 22:12

I think it's sad that the only thing people can apparently think of to do to cheer themselves up is put some fairy lights up and festoon their house with clutter. I really hate the modern trend of putting everything up in November, then taking it all down on Boxing Day. Christmas is the start of Christmas, not the end! I like seeing stuff in the shops, but my tree doesn't go up until mid December (which is early - when I was a child we put it up on 23rd December). I do judge.

Boymum2104 · 08/11/2023 22:14

I think it's probably because 'Autumn home decor' pumpkins etc is becoming a bigger thing so as soon as Halloween is done the pumpkins get replaced with Christmas decs

ABetterBitOfButter · 08/11/2023 22:14

Exactly this.

3amShopper · 08/11/2023 22:16

I haven't put ours up yet but ...My DS2 died and his funeral was the 27th of November. It went up a couple of days after, we needed the distraction. Dd died almost exactly a year later.

We'll probably put the tree up on her anniversary weekend this year. In between this is my DSs birthday so we generally let him choose. If he wants it up next week, we'll put it up next week.

I give not one fig for what other people think. And if they judge me, they can come and see all the memorial baubles and perhaps dial their judgement back.

Pinksmyfavoritecolour · 08/11/2023 22:22

I know someone who's tree and decorations are up, they have had the most awful year with a very poorly baby who spent his first few months in hospital and barely saw their little girl, so if it brightens them and their kids up, why not, life's too short to care what others think.

TheDandyLion · 08/11/2023 22:23

I don't bother with a tree at all but I've put lights up inside and outside my house already up this year. I've rebranded them "winter lights" instead of "Christmas lights". Its nice to see a bit of decoration around the place.

JenniferBooth · 08/11/2023 22:23

@3amshopper Im so so sorry for your losses Flowers

DappledThings · 08/11/2023 22:23

Ours goes up first weekend in December. Wouldn’t be till about the 20th if it was up to me but DH likes to do it earlier.

I won't have it down early though. Never before Twelfth Night. I judge people taking their decorations down early far more than those putting them up early.

Fernsoak · 08/11/2023 22:24

I think that life in general (and especially since covid) is getting more and more stressful - it’s relentless. People have to work such long hours and juggle so much that who can blame anyone wanting a little bit of joy earlier than usual.

I remember as a child that feeling of absolute happiness when the Xmas decorations went up, maybe that’s what the early decorators are trying to recreate ? Coming home after a long day and turning on some sparkly lights and feeling like there’s something to look forward to. Putting the tree up early isn’t hurting anyone so why does it matter if it’s in November !

Ylvamoon · 08/11/2023 22:24

No way, I don't see the point of Christmas starting this early.

Our tree is put up on first day of school holidays and is lucky if it stays up past boxing day.

I always associate November as the month to remember the dead.
You have remembrance Sunday and then the last Sunday of November (actually the one before 1st advert) that's about remembering loved ones who have died.... I know, it's a religious thing, but I feel its an important part of life.

We can't always gloss over the things that may make us uncomfortable with tinsel and twinkling lights.

fourelementary · 08/11/2023 22:25

I think it’s just another example of the instant gratification that people want and their inability to just wait… people move from one thing to the next- we want info- we go online, we fancy some kind of food we order it to be delivered right away… we want to watch a film- we stream it. It’s the modern way now and people don’t learn to delay gratification any more. Which is a bad thing really as there are many studies showing clear links with that ability and future success.
Attention spans are shorter and shorter. Little Kids in the 90s could watch an episode of something for 20-30 minutes from toddler age. The original teletubbies was around 25 mins. Now kids are lucky to watch 2-3 minutes on YouTube before flicking to the next thing. And we wonder why ADHD rates are rocketing?! Now it’s “oh Halloween is over, we can’t wait for the next thing so let’s just get Xmas stuff out now” then 5 minutes after Xmas, “I’m fed up let’s take it all down again” 🤦🏻‍♀️

😂 I live in Knightsbridge and my (eccentric, very posh) neighbour had her tree up until the summer this year. She also decorates early every year.

Susuwatariandkodama · 08/11/2023 22:36

It’s called a season for a reason! 😂 mine are always up in November and don’t come down until January! 🎄

Yes, I wonder if influencers with their autumn decor then festive decor have a lot to answer for. Then neighbours, friends etc follow suit…

Forgotmylogindetails · 08/11/2023 22:43

not your monkeys not your circus.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 08/11/2023 22:51

I think it’s been getting earlier since 2020 as every year since has been shit (including 2020 of course) and people need something to cheer them up!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 08/11/2023 22:53

We’re usually about the 10th (real tree) but in 2020 got a fake one and put it up at the end of November because everything felt so miserable. It was a disaster because the cat kept pulling it over - she doesn’t bother with the tree really but does like to pull decorations off it and batter them around.

I have some fairy lights I put along the mantelpiece and then end up in a jug to make a sort of lamp, and those will go up soon, and also a load of pine cone/twiggy things that go in a vase.
