What is with lip fillers?!? They look so fake and awful

i’m probably showing my age (I’m in my 40s) but am I alone in thinking the lip filler look is just awful?

I see them all over social media and in real life when I’m around people in their 20s. Why? They look so fake.

I know it’s not our fault as women. We’re manipulated into thinking our bodies and faces are never good enough. But lip fillers are so ubiquitous and look so, so bad, I just don’t get it.

I don't like the look of the huge ones. The subtle natural ones look very nice on other people but it's not something I'd personally choose to do. I'm certainly not against procedures, but for me it would be more about correcting things that had changed (like my frown line) rather than changing or enhancing my features to look different. At my age I don't care whether my look fits the current asthetic any more. I'm used to my face the way it is.

I totally understand this. You still look like you but with a little help.

My whole point was you said it didn’t even do much, Botox, so to me, why would someone do it if it doesn’t do much?

Friends of mine who have it done they look fresher and they are obviously pleased with the results as are you.

My nana eg, I’m sure she’d have had cosmetic surgery on her face as she didn’t like her nose as she said it was too big. On her face, she didn’t need it as she was young looking, but I think was scared of getting rhinoplasty.

It doesn't do as much as a lot of people think. I was explaining that the really overdone look requires surgery. That doesn't mean Botox does nothing, just that it doesn't get you that very OTT look. There's a middle ground!

A subtle effect is still an effect. I sometimes wear "natural" makeup. It's subtle, but it makes a difference and I like it.

Again, it's only injectables where people question this and can't see the point. Nobody questions a subtle lowlight or highlight, or nude lipstick.

CorneliaStreet · 08/11/2023 07:52

You can wipe off a nude lipstick if you don’t like how it looks. If you don’t like your lip filler, you’re stuck with it for months. That’s why I couldn’t have injectables, plus I do think there is a fundamental difference between surface level things like make up and hair colour and things being injected under the skin. Then, to my mind, it becomes ‘medical’.

SpicedAppleAndFreshCider · 08/11/2023 08:16

@SurprisedWithAHorse have you got massive filler filled lips because that is what the thread is about?

Sure, and you can leave your Botox or filler to fade if you don't like those. You don't get a massive effect from one dose...you need to do it over and over at high quantities for that. Most people start small. Some of us stay there. It's temporary.

At any rate, if you don't want to take the risk of having filler etc, you don't have to. But it isn't somehow morally inferior to hair dye etc just because it's something you don't choose. Clearly you have the "injectable" psychological barrier and that's fine, but it's not an objective measure of when a treatment becomes "bad". It's how you personally feel about it, no more and no less.

You've asked me that already and I answered. No, never had filler of any kind. You were happy to chat to other posters about Botox, so I wasn't aware it had suddenly become an unacceptable tangent.

SpicedAppleAndFreshCider · 08/11/2023 08:49

Yes I was happy to chat to other posters. Most of them aren't saying having your hair coloured or wearing lipstick is the same as botox/fillers. Which is ridiculous.

I'm not saying having botox is ridiculous but Courtney Cox and other celebrities aren't putting out SERIOUS statements about their hair & lipstick.

They were talking about Botox. It's either an acceptable tangent to talk about or it's not. The measure is not whether or not you agree with what someone is saying about it.

And I'm not speaking for them or Courtney Cox or anyone else. What exactly do you want at this point? Do you just want to be snippy at me? You can PM if you want to do that, it's fine by me.

Somewhat ironically, your opinion doesn't matter, either. However, I'm not amazed that you think it does.

Soz. 😘

Yay! Nice of you to confirm that blatant sexism is alive and well on MN.

He just keeps proving that. It’s pathetically funny really.

Totally agree that they look awful. If I see someone with lip filler I assume they’re insecure, gullible, and dim, and I strongly dislike them for being part of the pornified culture that demands women should try to look like inflatable dolls.

I'd judge you far more than I'd judge anyone with lip filler. You sound like an awful person.

I really hope you air these views around us gullible and dim people so we know to avoid you and your awful personality like the plague

I respect men/women who wants to go that route. It is their body and can do whatever they want. I admit, I’ve seen really bad ones when it gets a little too much. A family friend kept getting botox and her face looks like a lion now. Another family friend had so much lip fillers whenever she talked to us her words slurred and her lips looked so wrinkly and crooked. I do think about what I want to change with my body but I also think about the long time side effects. I’m just not that rich. I’m thankful that I’m content with what I have right now no matter how flawed my body is. 🥹

A lion? 😂 do you mean facial fillers?

happyl · 09/09/2024 08:45

I think people do get immune to how it looks over time. I know a few long term botox users who now have very similar facial features, despite not looking like each other at all originally. 🤣
The shiny, stretched face of boe vibe isn't for me.

Disturbia81 · 09/09/2024 08:24

Yes. 😂 Sorry it seems exaggerated but that’s how I see it. Idk she looked so beautiful before. But now her skin was so stretched out probably due to face lift as well. Really high and round cheek bones and her eyes seem smaller. I think she had some lip fillers as well because they looked so plumped. She’s also in her late 70’s so who knows how long has been doing it.

Disturbia81 · 09/09/2024 18:01

@pinkkitten83 Yeah botox just relaxes the wrinkles and you can't tell most of the time, it's filler that makes people look fuller faced and odd.
The lion description makes me think of cat man who had all the surgeries 😆

I know a couple of people who have overdone the eye botox (crows feet area) in addition to their cheek filler and they look very feline.
