What is with lip fillers?!? They look so fake and awful

i’m probably showing my age (I’m in my 40s) but am I alone in thinking the lip filler look is just awful?

I see them all over social media and in real life when I’m around people in their 20s. Why? They look so fake.

I know it’s not our fault as women. We’re manipulated into thinking our bodies and faces are never good enough. But lip fillers are so ubiquitous and look so, so bad, I just don’t get it.

It's so gross to look at though

Well you think so. And many others it seems. But those who do it presumably don’t see it that way. It’s their money to spend (or waste - depending on your view). And no, I don’t like it either

VeridicalVagabond · 06/11/2023 12:19

I don't like them either, but I was blessed with naturally full lips so I've also never needed them.

I get Botox in my forehead so seems hypocritical to judge women getting filler in their lips if they want it. If they're happy with it then crack on (though I do worry about the lasting impact on young girls and their self image, I'm glad it wasn't a thing when I was a teen because I was so insecure God knows what I'd have done to my face!)

OneForTheRoadThen · 06/11/2023 12:20

I'm not a fan personally but each to their own.

I think the ridge or 'filler moustache' that occurs when the filler migrates a bit is enough to put me off getting them.

Lionoso · 06/11/2023 12:20

Genuine question to those who have had lip fillers done, if it's stretching out your lips, what happens to your skin when you stop putting fillers in? Does the skin stay stretched out? Wouldn't it be more aging further down the line?

barbarahunter · 06/11/2023 12:20

I have had some lip filler to replace the volume my lips lost as I aged, and I really like it.

CasaAmarela · 06/11/2023 12:21

I think a very small amount like 1ml can look good but a lot of people seem to get addicted and go OTT.

Ivegotsunshineinabag · 06/11/2023 12:22

Love my lips….

I’m also botoxed to the point of no frowning and have my eyelashes curled and dyed.

BTW I also have no breasts or nipples due to breast cancer.

It’s my body and I probably only have a few years before the next cancer hits, I’ll do what I want with it.

If you don’t like it, don’t have it done.

YourWinter · 06/11/2023 12:22

They are always obvious and look terrible, as do lashes and brows that have been “done”. It’s so sad that anyone feels the need to look so false.

Ivegotsunshineinabag · 06/11/2023 12:23

I’m 43 btw

Devilsmommy · 06/11/2023 12:24

When I see someone with them and especially if they're pulling that face that looks like they're trying to do a model pose, my instant thought is "do you know how much you look like a blow up doll I wonder?" 🤔

Acornsoup · 06/11/2023 12:24

I always think anaphylactic shock when I see them. Also dislike sharpie eyebrows, and Snuffleupagus eye lashes. IMO they look like a slightly smudges blow up doll (the one with the open mouth seen at stag parties) which is not an attractive look on a live woman.

Theraffarian · 06/11/2023 12:25

I’m sure some discreetly done ones are fine , but I did see a woman a couple of weeks ago who had overdone them to the extent her lips looked like a duck beak . She must have been able to see them sticking out if she looked downwards as they were so manipulated out of any natural shape . They also looked painful , as if the skin would break as it had been stretched so tightly, definitely disfiguring .

Usernamen · 06/11/2023 12:25

YABU to suggest adult women are being “manipulated” to get lip fillers, botox etc.

The look is not to my taste, but it’s incredibly patronising to suggest the women opting for this look don’t know their own mind and what they like aesthetically and are just being “manipulated”.

And if we are to take your claim seriously that they are being manipulated, it’s women who are doing the manipulating as the vast majority of aesthetic doctors and nurses performing and promoting these services are women.

Misogynistic claims all round, I’m afraid.

aswarmofmidges · 06/11/2023 12:26

So advertising isn't manipulation?

scrunchie2 · 06/11/2023 12:26

I'm sure all the women with lip fillers are crying in to their coffees as you type 😂

BansheeofInisherin · 06/11/2023 12:27

Not for me. But then I am in my 50s, and won't be getting Botox either. I am fine as I am. Great, even.

Lordofmyflies · 06/11/2023 12:27

I completely agree with you OP. At best they look 'filled' and fake, and worst they look ridiculous! It must be really uncomfortable and affect the way they eat - dribbling?! Its up to the individual obviously, but I don't understand it.

Has lip fillers been around long enough to answer this question?
Surely it used to be women in their 40s and above getting lip filler. Which you can keep going with.
But from early 20s?

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 06/11/2023 12:31

My worry isn't people having them done (knock yourself out) but the fact that it seems to be younger and younger women having it done. I work in a supermarket so I see a LOT of people every day, and it's particularly noticeable during the holiday season. Young women, in their twenties, when they are at their most naturally beautiful, with lips that look so unnatural that I find myself slightly worried about what their idea of 'natural beauty' must look like. They all have faces like ducks.

SnapdragonToadflax · 06/11/2023 12:32

YANBU, they look weird. And yes, you can tell. Perhaps not if you've never seen someone before and it's very subtle, but if your best mate got it done you'd know. Their mouths move differently and just look odd, it's all a bit uncanny valley.

Hopefully it's just a fashion and will go away soon (no doubt for some other weird body modification to take its place). I think people are mostly over that very frozen Botox look now, thankfully.

SirChenjins · 06/11/2023 12:34

It's not a look I like - whether that's the full on inflatable lips look, the puffed up area between your upper lip and nose look, the horizontal upper lip bit, or anything in between. It all looks really fake and plastic. A couple of women at work have them - not the big inflatable lips look, but very definitely fillers and they looked much better before imo. They also speak differently now too. One has also had her cheeks done and I can't get the image of a cartoon hamster with too much lipstick out of my head every time I see her.

If a large amount is dissolved too quickly it leaves the lips with loose skin (I saw pics of it on a thread on here).

When someone I know IRL stopped having it her lips just gradually went back ton normal but I don't think she'd had a large amount.

Jewelspun · 06/11/2023 12:34

On these posts you always get someone posting a photo of themselves claiming how natural their fillers look when it's obvious that they look like they've been filled and also look awful.

Worldgonecrazy · 06/11/2023 12:35

I dislike them and feel sorry for the women who feel they have to get them done. (Same to Botox and other fillers) Having said that I don’t need any help to have full lips. I might feel differently if I had different genetics.

It’s hard for those who are comfortable in their skin to understand the internal and external pressures to conform to whatever the latest societal beauty standard is. It must be awful for young women who haven’t developed the ‘fuck it’ attitude that comes with the years.

The beauty industry needs to create extremes and frequent changes to generate money. I’m sure ultra thin eyebrows or no eyebrows and very thin lips are just around the corner.

Saggypants · 06/11/2023 12:35

I don't think women care if their filled lips look natural. You're meant to be able to tell they've been 'done', just like the nails and eyelashes (and cheek contouring, hair extensions, etc etc).

I don't understand what message they're trying to send but they quite clearly want everyone to know they're spending lots of money on this stuff.
