What is with lip fillers?!? They look so fake and awful

Fanofan1 · 06/11/2023 11:51

i’m probably showing my age (I’m in my 40s) but am I alone in thinking the lip filler look is just awful?

I see them all over social media and in real life when I’m around people in their 20s. Why? They look so fake.

I know it’s not our fault as women. We’re manipulated into thinking our bodies and faces are never good enough. But lip fillers are so ubiquitous and look so, so bad, I just don’t get it.

Please refer to my previous post.

Very formal. Is that list exhaustive?

BarbiesWorld · 07/11/2023 14:47

@CoffeeCantata it honestly wasn't meant to be goady! It just fascinates me... especially as by the sounds of what a lot of PPs have written they'd judge me hideously for my long fake hair, acrylic nails, lip fillers and tinted lashes and brows.

I present myself in a way that makes me happy so it's no skin off my teeth but comments like yours are definitely more character traits than looks. Musing, but do you think classy is a combination of both the aesthetics and the personality maybe?

How do people feel about Dolly Parton?

She says it takes a lot of money to look this cheap.

You mean her look modelled on the town tramp?

bryceQ · 07/11/2023 14:53

Not 'obvious' (OK, you've got breasts - put them away, we don't need to see them all the time)
Being reserved in terms of presentation - holding something back (see above) which creates a 'mystique'. It's not all in the shop window.
Not attention seeking or needy - focus on something outside yourself.
Thoughtful, well-read, lots of interests, able to talk to all kinds of people.
Having a considerate attitude to others and taking an interest in them and in the world around you.
Not being ostentatious or being a consipicuous consumer.

Would you consider Marilyn Monroe or the old movie stars classy? They certainly had ample cleavage, pretty ostentatious but were very intelligent, dare i say "woke" women.

Probably not, they're the obvious examples that spring to mind.

Please can we add no poo and bogey encrusted false nails?

Because people with acrylics don’t wash their hands, obviously.

How is concern for other women misogyny? Nobody has really said they shouldn't do it but wonder why they do it . I don't think that's misogyny which imo Is thrown about far too easy when it suits when it's just disagreement or questioning.

Majority of the comments are saying they look ugly/awful/horrible. No concern expressed whatsoever.

@Barbies

No worries! I know it's a minefield to try and define these things - everyone has a different idea, but you've made me think about this and yes, I think I do. I suppose I'd sum it up by saying that 'classy' (cliche alert) means being comfortable in your own skin - being confident in yourself, but quietly confident. Presenting yourself sincerely and without either the need or the wish to be something you aren't. I'm not happy with the word, but I've met classy people from different social classes - I don't personally think of it as just 'upper class'.

I suppose I think that the aesthetics - in this case, the way a person has chosen to present themselves (not things they can't control, such as the size of their nose, for eg,) does express something about them. So while you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, if choices have been made - and sometimes quite extreme ones - I think you have to see those as carrying a message.

You didn't know?

Yes, that's what she modelled her look on. Famously. She's always been open about it. As a little girl in extreme poverty with a huge but loving family, she thought the lady looked beautiful and said if she could, she'd dress like that when she grew up. You didn't know her quips "It costs a lot of money to look this cheap" or "I don't know how long it takes to do my hair, I'm never there"?

It's a full on fake look. But it's also distinctive and everyone knows it's her. And despite it being fake, she's clearly a very sincere and genuine person, not to mention extremely talented, funny and generous with her philanthropic work.

I suppose what I was really asking was whether there were people out there who couldn't see past the fake look to the dream and personal passion it represents for her, nor her talent, generosity and sincerity of character. Well, I have my answer. But I don't think Dolly is the one who looks bad for it, however one defines it.

I knew someone would work themselves up into a righteous froth of indignation over this.

The words “town tramp” came from directly from the lovely Dolly’s mouth, so you can shove your fucking hell, quite frankly.

Intriguedbythis · 07/11/2023 15:09

Ok, im going to play devil’s advocate here. I have looked at the photos posted on this thread by ladies with filled lips ( respect to them for the bravery on a relatively feisty feed) and other posters keep saying they have a ledge.

I cannot particularly descern a particularly obvious ‘ledge’ in most the photos. Also, some lips have this shape…..For example, never had my lips filled or anything else and my lips have a sort of white ledge over them… could it be the lighting in the photos?

I will however admit that close up / side profile I can notice some ladies’ lips done! Not sure I could tell from a photo through.

attaching a photo of my unfilled yet slightly ‘ledge looking’ lips - just to show it could be the shape of those ladies lips anyway regardless of the filler.

( I do have an overbite so that could be why my top one looks like it has a ledge and slightly off centre 😂 😂 )

And she was being ironic. Poking gentle fun at her own style because she knows what it looks like and what it was based on, but fuck it, she loved it as a little girl and now she can do it.

You, on the other hand, literally reduced her right down to that with no awareness or irony at all. But as Dolly herself said, everyone thought the joke was on her, when in fact it was on them.

Never have I said that a woman with a face full of fakery can't be a sincere and genuine person. Unless you can prove that I have, of course.

Not at all. Her look has always been “town tramp” - she’s spoken about it many times over the years. The reference was entirely intentional and if you knew anything about DP you’d have got it straightaway.
