What is with lip fillers?!? They look so fake and awful

Fanofan1 · 06/11/2023 11:51

i’m probably showing my age (I’m in my 40s) but am I alone in thinking the lip filler look is just awful?

I see them all over social media and in real life when I’m around people in their 20s. Why? They look so fake.

I know it’s not our fault as women. We’re manipulated into thinking our bodies and faces are never good enough. But lip fillers are so ubiquitous and look so, so bad, I just don’t get it.

I work in an environment where I can see 20-30 people a day up close. I can tell a mile off if they've had filler, it's just so unnatural and there are real issues with speech and lumpy lips.

I've asked on more than one occasion if this is a swelling due to a reaction as they've been so odd looking.

I'm very much an each to here own but I can't help but wonder what the practitioners are thinking when they are injecting such large volumes.

Beezknees · 07/11/2023 20:24

They don't always look obvious. It depends on how much they put in there.

Meowandthen · 07/11/2023 20:26

Christ almighty. Catching up and I see that a man has had to chime in with his manly opinion.

How fucking tiresome.

Men posting here are weird. It’s as if they can’t bear women to have discussions without trying to tell us what we should be thinking or doing.

In the nicest way, I'm not talking about you and what you do and don't have done. And why do you think responding to your posts means I'm annoyed?

You said that dyeing your hair is "a bit different" to redoing fillers and Botox, and as you mentioned the price of box dye, I took that to mean "cheaper". So my response was that Botox can in fact cost less than cut and colours over a year (it definitely takes a lot less time). And even if it were more expensive, if someone can afford it and it's worth it to them, it's irrelevant that a different treatment costs less.

It's all just reading like attempts to make some treatments (eg for hair) more acceptable than others.

In the nicest way back to you. People have been having their hair cut and dyed for years and years. It is not the same as injecting stuff into your face.

Yes, how very dare a man be allowed to express an opinion, an opinion that happens to be shared by the majority of the other posters.

Just for the record, I haven't told anyone what they should be thinking or doing and I never would. But feel free to manipulate what I said for your own agenda.

So it's not about the cost, it's because you have a personal psychological barrier when it comes to injectables.

That's fair enough. But the fact that you have some feeling about it doesn't mean it is actually objectively worse than hair treatments. I've seen plenty of women absolutely destroy their hair with bleaching, colouring and straightening, or react badly to the dye.

You've got every right not to want fillers or Botox, but the fact that you don't like the idea of an injectable doesn't make it "different" (meaning "morally inferior") to whatever form of modification and fakery feels OK to you. I don't know about fillers, but assuming they're not vastly different to Botox, it's a piddling procedure that takes about 90 seconds and is only temporary anyway.

I have lip fillers as my top lip is naturally very small. I have the smallest amount possibly put in to my lips but it's enough for me to feel so much better about myself. They look completely natural. I do it for me, not for anyone else, and anyone else's opinion really isn't of my concern!

SurprisedWithAHorse · 07/11/2023 20:47

SpicedAppleAndFreshCider · 07/11/2023 20:43

Look, I'm sorry that there isn't actually any sound reasoning for hair dye being a morally superior choice to Botox. It's obvious that you and a lot of posters set a lot of store by the fact you don't have injectables and really want it to make you better people, so I'm sorry that you'll have to find something else.

But it is true. Botox isn't even a new treatment, it's been around for well over 20 years. It doesn't even do that much, tbh. The truly overdone look usually involves surgery.

The big lips is surgery?

Why do you think people are being superior because they don't like the look?

Hasn't Courtney Cox said she regrets how much stuff she's put in her face?

I don't know, has she? I don't really follow sleb culture. Some people might well regret it, but fillers and Botox are temporary so if you hate them, they'll wear off. Big lips alone, maybe not, depends on how big, I guess. But the general overdone look - please don't pretend you don't know what I'm talking about - is usually a product of surgery. There's only so much a minor injectable can do.

There's no way you could read the thread and not think people are being superior about it, so forgive me for not bothering with that obtuseness.

Yes she does regret it.

You have a serious attitude problem.

your opinion on what a woman chooses to do to her face and body doesn’t matter one iota.

im amazed you think it does tbh.

Well, that's her affair. Being an older woman in Hollywood, she'll be under extreme pressure regarding her looks. She's brave to talk about it.

I'll enquire about attitude transplants next time I'm at the clinic. I don't do these things to please other people, though, so this is one area where I'll probably stay natural.

I don’t get Botox! Never had it done. Know friends who have it done. I’m fairly lucky, my forehead isn’t that lined and if people think I look older, so what?!

I know Botox has been around for over 20 years but as with most other plastic surgery procedures I’m scared of putting things into my face/body.

Well that's fair enough. If you don't want to do it, then don't.

I was very nervous when I first went, terrified of freezing my face etc. My practitioner was very good, though, very reassuring and didn't pressure me. He explained how it worked, that you don't get totally frozen from one treatment and told me he gets it himself, and his face wasn't frozen at all. I decided to go for it - it's temporary - and I was delighted. Minimum dose every 12 to 18 months does me fine for now.

A lot of people have a psychological barrier about injectables. It's very understandable but it doesn't make them somehow worse than other treatments.

My whole point was you said it didn’t even do much, Botox, so to me, why would someone do it if it doesn’t do much?

Friends of mine who have it done they look fresher and they are obviously pleased with the results as are you.

My nana eg, I’m sure she’d have had cosmetic surgery on her face as she didn’t like her nose as she said it was too big. On her face, she didn’t need it as she was young looking, but I think was scared of getting rhinoplasty.

I first had botox around 20 years ago in my 30s. I certainly didn't think I looked old, but I had a really deep line between my eyebrows from squinting due to headaches that made me look like I was permanently frowning. My DC would ask what they'd done as I had my 'cross face', and people were constantly asking me what was wrong. Over the years I've carried on with it off and on about every 12 -18 months, with some big gaps when budget didn't allow. If I leave it longer than 18m a bit of a crease starts to form, but nothing like the way it was in my 30s as its acted preventatively over the years. I'm not frozen, don't look fake and its done wonders for my headaches. It cost me £90 now. Which is cheaper than 20 years ago when I paid £150.
I've never had it go wrong and if any long term effects were going to reveal themselves...well, they've had 20 years to do so and nothing yet. In the highly unlikely event that it inexplicably starts to 'age' me, well I'm 54 so I dare say something has to soon!

SpicedAppleAndFreshCider · 07/11/2023 22:03

@5128gap that is a really positive update about botox.

How do you feel about huge lip fillers?

I don't like the look of the huge ones. The subtle natural ones look very nice on other people but it's not something I'd personally choose to do. I'm certainly not against procedures, but for me it would be more about correcting things that had changed (like my frown line) rather than changing or enhancing my features to look different. At my age I don't care whether my look fits the current asthetic any more. I'm used to my face the way it is.
