Please tell me where! I've been to the Isle of Wight and looked in all the places I was told about, no luck. Same to a place in Scotland they apparently live in the garden, nowt. Please help me see one!

I saw lots when I went on holiday to the Isle of Wight!

Chchchanging · 03/11/2023 18:03

Saw one on Tuesday in Queen Elizabeth Forest near Aberfoyle in Loch Lomond!.
I also lived in Formby as a child and saw then all the time. I didn't even know grey squirrels existed until we moved south when I was 11!

BrimfulOfMash · 03/11/2023 18:03

Many times in the Lakes.

They are much more shy than greys, and I have never seen one on the ground.

Much smaller than greys, tuftier ears and bushier tail.

Crikeyalmighty · 03/11/2023 18:03

Yes- but only when we lived in Denmark

oobladay · 03/11/2023 18:03

Never and I would love to - they're gorgeous. Glad to read that there are still some places where they might be found. Had it in my head that there were no longer any in the UK

IhearyouClemFandango · 03/11/2023 18:03

I live on the IoW and see them regularly in the back garden.

Yoyooo · 03/11/2023 18:04

Yes, lots in Gurnard Isle of Wight

TempsPerdu · 03/11/2023 18:05

I saw them on the Isle of Wight - it was at the garlic farm there, looking out from the cafe. They had feeders out for them, and there were loads.

Dozens on Anglesey - best place to see them is Penrhos Park just outside Holyhead. There will be loads there now feeding on the pumpkins.

sinesperanza · 03/11/2023 18:05

In Scotland near killin

Gulbekian · 03/11/2023 18:06

Yes, Munich. You see them all over here. We had one in our garden daily for a couple of weeks. It was raiding our hazelnut tree. It was very confusing for the cat. She didn't seem able to decide whether to pick a fight or to just stay stretched out in the sun and watch 😂.

BestIsWest · 03/11/2023 18:06

Yes in Canada. Also saw a black one.
Spent hours in various reserves in the UK and never seen one here.

LightDrizzle · 03/11/2023 18:06

The Lake District at The Cottage in the Woods hotel.

SkyTree · 03/11/2023 18:06

Dumfries and Galloway

Has anyone else seen black squirrels?

Yes, there are a few round here. Sweet little things. One ran across the fence at the bottom of our garden a few weeks ago.

Gymmum82 · 03/11/2023 18:07

Yes. Lots in formby though now they are more elusive as apparently they used to feed them and now they don’t. Used to be guaranteed to see them but apparently not anymore

CormorantStrikesBack · 03/11/2023 18:07

Aberfoyle. They have a red squirrel feeding point and I see them every time I go.

Yes, Austria. There’s loads of red ones and loads of black ones.

ditalini · 03/11/2023 18:10

They used to nick all the peanuts from my aunt's garden when she lived in Argyll.

Last time I saw them was this summer at the hides in Queen Elizabeth Forest park near Callander - I'd say that was pretty much a guaranteed spot, again because of easy access to food.

nipersvest · 03/11/2023 18:10

Yes, I grew up in Formby. Back in the 70's/80's, there were so many we used to get them coming into people's gardens but the population has dwindled now that even in the pine woods you will only see a few. Sad really, we used to love seeing them run up and down the trees as kids.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 03/11/2023 18:11

Yes, one in Kislovodsk in Russia and one in Stockholm. I was so excited to see them. I've been to the Isle of Wight a fair few times and never seen one.

FTM2022SS · 03/11/2023 18:12

Formby and Centre Parcs in the Lakes! This guy wanted to come for dinner in center Parcs!

Have you ever seen a red squirrel?
BoobyDazzler · 03/11/2023 18:13

Yea but only in France, specifically the Dordogne.

CormoranStrikeIsBloodyLovely · 03/11/2023 18:13

Centre Parcs, Whinfell. We see them often when we go.

Last weekend one was trying to get in our lodge! It was very bold little red squirrel! It came right up to us and then tried to get past my husband and through the patio doors! 😂
