What were you scared of as a kid that wasn't meant to be scary?

For me it was Dastardly and Muttley. I have no idea why but I was terrified of them and if I woke up in the night to use the bathroom I used to run because I thought they were hiding in my attic and would snatch me and pull me up.

It's just funny looking back because they're not even scary characters and not meant to be😂

Feathers. I used to run and get my dad if a feather poked out of my downie.

Dastardly and Muttley were terrifying! Proper child catcher vibes.

Street sweepers.

Hermittrismegistus · 03/11/2023 09:49

Santa. I remember crying my eyes out and refusing to enter Santa's grotto when I was 4. Going into a dark cave and sitting on a strange man's knee was not my idea of fun.

Peter Rabbit wallpaper in my bedroom, I was terrified of it and DM had to change it!

VeridicalVagabond · 03/11/2023 09:51

Dried flowers and pot pourri. My gran had to put all her pot pourri up out of my eyeline or I'd freak out. My mum got me a bath bomb once not realising it has dried lavender in it, which shot out as it fizzed and sent me into a full 20 minute hysterical meltdown.

I'm still not keen on them, but no idea where the visceral childhood fear of them came from.

Our attic. I used to run along the landing to my room because I thought a monster would jump out the hatch and get me. Terrified me

The Rag and bone man.

Errrr rag bone through the megaphone.

I used to run in the house.

TenThousandSpoons · 03/11/2023 09:52

Willow the Whisp characters (the walking tv in particular).

persister · 03/11/2023 09:56

Flushing the toilet. Used to stand poised ready to run, flush then gallop downstairs as fast as I could so the monster didn't get me (the one I'd woken up by flushing, of course).

Worzel Gummidge. Still hate scarecrows now.

My dd was terrified of a character on The Tellytubbies. Imagine her delight when she found an online community of other snowflakes!!

Trees. No idea why.

I was terrified of spiders as a kid. Now I like them. There's one in our electricity cupboard called Mrs Spidey, and I felt sorry for a drowned one I found in the bath the other day. Such clever webs they make, and the little packets of dinners they make.

BarborousBarbra · 03/11/2023 10:10

Mermaids. I know there are some terrifying mermaid stories to be found but when I was a kid it was all cosy Little mermaid type fish people that were definitely not supposed to be scary!

AuntMarch · 03/11/2023 10:10

Sneaker from The Shoe People was mine, mum had to fast forward an entire episode on my video that was concentrated on him.

Me too.
Also dogs, after being knocked over by one as a small child.

One of my relatives created this!! No one remembers it now. So rarely get the chance to say that!!

BarborousBarbra · 03/11/2023 10:16

I've just remembered I also used to find the radio creepy. Not any particular station or show to anything just the radio. Disembodied voices coming from seemingly out of thin air I suppose. Had no similar issues with the TV though!

spiderlight · 03/11/2023 10:18

The inside of rubber gloves. The finger-holes gave me the absolute creeps.

Helpmysis · 03/11/2023 10:19

Not sure if it was intended to be creepy but I had nightmares for weeks after seeing the live performance of ‘hit me with your rhythm stick’ on top of the pops.
