What were you scared of as a kid that wasn't meant to be scary?

For me it was Dastardly and Muttley. I have no idea why but I was terrified of them and if I woke up in the night to use the bathroom I used to run because I thought they were hiding in my attic and would snatch me and pull me up.

It's just funny looking back because they're not even scary characters and not meant to be😂

A tiny toy troll (the ones with the colourful sticking up hair) that lived on top of a wardrobe in my Granny's house. My Grandpa snored and I was convinced it was the troll making the noise in the night.... but did that weird thing kids do and didn't tell anyone I was scared of it. Every time we stayed there I was petrified!

Lollyloup80 · 03/11/2023 11:20

People dressed up in costumes, not just Halloween etc but when there would be a massive teddy bear in the shopping centre or a giraffe in toys R Us - other kids would be hugging it and I would be hugging my mum begging not to go near it 🤣

Flushing the toilet. Used to stand poised ready to run, flush then gallop downstairs as fast as I could so the monster didn't get me (the one I'd woken up by flushing, of course).

Are you me? This is exactly what I came on here to say.

caringcarer · 03/11/2023 11:27

Those Dilak's on Dr Who. I was terrified of them.

Tallisker · 03/11/2023 11:29

Car washes! The ones you drive into and the brushes eat your car. I had to get out of the car and wait on the side for it to be done. And I remember a boyfriend being totally baffled that I still had to get out of the car when I was mid 20s. Horrible things.

IHeartGeneHunt · 03/11/2023 11:30

Mirrors. Had to have them covered.
Peacock feathers, the eyes scared me.
If anyone looked at me through the window from outside when I was inside, it TERRIFIED me, no idea why! That lasted until I was in my 20s!

Multi storey car parks...I remember my mum parking in one and I was screaming and sobbing

I have a genuine phobic fear of multi story car parks, I've mentioned it on here before!

I still regularly have bad dreams of being stuck in a dark old car park looking for my lost car or lost moped and never being able to find my way out!

Chanhedforthis · 03/11/2023 11:32

I had wallpaper that terrified me, it was clowns and I could of sworn they moved in the night.

FiferPiped · 03/11/2023 11:35

Peas. My dad said if you got one up your nose it would grow into a huge plant.
Couldn’t even look at them for years and obviously would never touch one and thought they had magic powers to fly up my nose if I got too close.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 03/11/2023 11:36

The BFG. I didn't want to show my children when it was re released as he is so scary but they loved it.

AnnaMagnani · 03/11/2023 11:39

Another vote for Santa.

A strange man in a weird costume wearing an obviously fake beard?

Why would that not be scary?

SkaneTos · 03/11/2023 11:39

My father was renovating our newly bought house. I was 5 years old. He was working with the insulation material, that yellow fluffy stuff, and he told me that if would touch it, then it would itch FOREVER.
So I was scared of yellow insulation material until I was around 13 years old.

Footprintsinthesand · 03/11/2023 11:45

The Chronicles of Narnia that the BBC did in the 1990s.

Doctor Who. Not the monsters. The Tardis.

Car washes
Cotton wool (still can't stand this)

TattyOne · 03/11/2023 11:51

Venus Fly Traps and Orchids and a couple of others I don't know the names of. I'm 58 and to this day I still can't stand them!

The Singing Ringing Tree (kids tv programme I think made in Czechoslovakia?)

Clowns

Any marionette/puppets/punch & judy etc.

The top floor of my aunties huge 3 storey house.

StEtienne93 · 03/11/2023 11:56

The ice cream van with it's music. Struck fear into my soul!!

Springisintheairohyeah · 03/11/2023 11:57

Wizbit and Wooly which was a kids TV show - I think with Paul Daniels? One was a giant rabbit, the other was a bit triangle shaped creature. Nothing at all scary about it as far as I can remember but I used to have nightmares about the fact that they were waiting at the bottom of the stairs to get me. Also - Rod Hull/Emu/Grotbags - although I don't think that's irrational, still terrifies me now!!!

MrsSkylerWhite · 03/11/2023 11:57

One of my friends would sympathise. He was terrified of The Singing Ringing Tree and also of Ken Dodd’s Diddymen.

MillyMolly74 · 03/11/2023 12:10

When we used to go to the seaside as kids my Mum would always say "watch out for the currents" meaning in the sea, obviously.

Not knowing what she meant I would picture in my head a giant dried fruit (currant!) running after me down the beach and it scared me to death 😂

Helpmysis · 03/11/2023 10:19

Not sure if it was intended to be creepy but I had nightmares for weeks after seeing the live performance of ‘hit me with your rhythm stick’ on top of the pops.

Omg i spat my coffee out laughing at this.
