What were you scared of as a kid that wasn't meant to be scary?

For me it was Dastardly and Muttley. I have no idea why but I was terrified of them and if I woke up in the night to use the bathroom I used to run because I thought they were hiding in my attic and would snatch me and pull me up.

It's just funny looking back because they're not even scary characters and not meant to be😂

Jeff Wayne’s musical interpretation of The War of the Worlds. My parents had the record and it used to scare the bejesus out of me. I now have the record and the book by HG Wells is one of my favorites, but when I was a kid it was proper run upstairs and hide under the duvet stuff.

The Honey Monster

Roland Rat - or rather, his TV show when I was tiny. I remember him living in a sort of dungeon under a road, with a skeleton in the corner. A plump bloke seemed to be held captive there, and he was force-fed crisps.

@Milarky
I loved Chrystal tips and my hair grew in a similar pyramid shape whenever I tried to grow it. Not a good look !

CITV generally used to creep me out. With a special mention to the show that was like a comic with real life characters hanging out of the front of it. Gave me the absolute heebie jeebies.

IsleofDen · 03/11/2023 10:45

Micky Mouse. I had a recurring nightmare where he was chasing me to put me in a witches cooking pot!

Beeswood · 03/11/2023 10:47

The curtains - when it was dark the shapes looked like skulls.
The big old wardrobe - a pattern on it looked like a man's face.
The ali baba basket - I thought a snake might come out of it.
Gap under bed - I thought snakes may be underneath, I always jumped out of bed to avoid them.

I loved Zzap but the comic was really creepy, even creepier than I remember it!

Mine were:
Magicians
Burglar Bill

Comedycook · 03/11/2023 10:52

Multi storey car parks...I remember my mum parking in one and I was screaming and sobbing

My dd absolutely hates magicians and any kind of magic trick. I can definitely see why they seem a bit sinister

cinnamonbiscuit · 03/11/2023 10:55

@eandzeandz13 literally came on to say the same! I used to have nightmares where they'd come inside, I'd hide under the table to escape and it would shrink down to fit under the table so it could get me.

Slitheringheights · 03/11/2023 10:56

Bohemian rhapsody video, it still scares me with the faces lol 😂

Mum2aTeen · 03/11/2023 10:56

That fantasia movie ( the Micky Mouse One).
And cockroachs never thought to be scared of spiders and snakes they were just a thing here (I'm from Australia).

Flowersinthewateringcan · 03/11/2023 10:57

When they had newly tarmaced and stoned a road, as a child I would go into hysterics if my dad drove the car over the loose stones. Have no idea why it scared me so much?

WestendVBroadway · 03/11/2023 10:58

Scaffolding- When I was about 7 my DGM told me about a man who was under Scaffolding when it collapsed. She then proceeded to tell me that they had to remove his body with a dustpan and brush as he was crushed to smithereens. I am in my mid 50s now and am still hesitant to walk under any. What the fuck was she thinking?

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 03/11/2023 10:59

The snow queen. I was convinced she was in the gap between my curtains.

Crocodiles. Think I saw them in London Zoo, was scared they’d eat my legs in bed

One certain woman friend of my nana’s, think she had dark sharp bob, I used to scream and hide whenever I saw her, but she didn’t do anything wrong.

Flushing the toilet. Used to stand poised ready to run, flush then gallop downstairs as fast as I could so the monster didn't get me (the one I'd woken up by flushing, of course).

God yes, except I thought the monsters would come up from the drains when I flushed!

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 03/11/2023 11:01

Ah yes, I see two of mine are meant to be scary. Crocodile also maybe from Peter Pan.

Oganesson118 · 03/11/2023 11:03

For some reason I was scared of the digital radio alarm in my mum's room. If it came on with just the radio, it was fine but sometimes it was a weird buzzer and something about that noise was really unnerving.

catbla2957 · 03/11/2023 11:03

Our parish priest!!!!! Creepy man. Loves to tell children about the devil

CanIPetThatDawg · 03/11/2023 11:04

Cattle rustlers.

I lived in the suburbs.

PenelopePlant · 03/11/2023 11:06

Mick Hicknall - was terrified of him

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 03/11/2023 11:11

A few slightly odd ones:
Children’s entertainers (90s child here with rich friends who would often get an entertainer at parties). I would run out of the room. Not even a clown thing, I was just terrified of the second-hand embarrassment.
William’s Wish Wellingtons. I can’t even remember why this series was so terrifying as a child but I couldn’t bear to watch it, even though at the same time I was happily enjoying Return to Oz which is basically a horror film marketed at children’s worst nightmares.
I wasn’t really a child at this point but I made the fatal mistake of reading the foreword on a piece of adolescent fiction. It said “this is all completely true”. Obviously I realise now that it was not, but it featured vampires and killer spiders and I swear I could barely sleep for two years worrying one of those would turn up at my bedroom window. Darren Shan in case that rings a bell for anyone.
