What were you scared of as a kid that wasn't meant to be scary?

For me it was Dastardly and Muttley. I have no idea why but I was terrified of them and if I woke up in the night to use the bathroom I used to run because I thought they were hiding in my attic and would snatch me and pull me up.

It's just funny looking back because they're not even scary characters and not meant to be😂

An advert that was for a Texan bar I think, I used to hide behind the sofa, no idea why, think there was a man on with a gruff voice😀

I found it, it was a man about to be burned alive, no wonder I was scared, what were they thinking?🙄

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 03/11/2023 12:15

The vacuum cleaner. The noise scared me and I thought my Mum was going to hoover me up with it.

ShoesoftheWorld · 03/11/2023 12:15

The ATV ident.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 03/11/2023 12:16

Fanny Craddock on Nationwide scared me when she shouted at Johnny.

CoodleMoodle · 03/11/2023 12:21

ET, but I still stand with that one. For some reason I had an ET piggy bank on my window ledge and was TERRIFIED of it.

I also had to draw a picture of Elizabeth I at school, and DM was so proud of it she stuck it up on my bedroom wall. I was so scared she was going to come to life! One day I plucked up all my courage and pulled it down, my heart was absolutely hammering. Still hate things looking at me.

My DH and kids think I'm crazy when they see my reaction to her 😂

MothralovesGojira · 03/11/2023 12:24

The doors at our local Debenhams department store. I was absolutely convinced that I would get caught between two doors and crushed to death!

tylerina · 03/11/2023 12:26

The weird looking thing that hung from a building in the video of "Brick in the Wall"

😬

sockarefootwear · 03/11/2023 12:36

The man who lived next door. I loved his wife and DC but was terrified of him. There was no obvious reason for this- he was never nasty or inappropriate towards me, didn't shout etc and as far as I am aware was never violent etc towards anyone. He wasn't unusual looking or particularly large etc- just an ordinary family man. My mum remained friends with them after we moved away and he still gave me the creeps even as an adult despite me never having seen him do anything unpleasant.

Ha ha. God its so interesting though. I wonder what it is that strikes terror in some and not others.
Was it that video where she had all the white make up on and was acting a bit strange?

Scaffolding- When I was about 7 my DGM told me about a man who was under Scaffolding when it collapsed. She then proceeded to tell me that they had to remove his body with a dustpan and brush as he was crushed to smithereens. I am in my mid 50s now and am still hesitant to walk under any. What the fuck was she thinking?

My mum told me a story that apparently someone in her work didnt know she had stood on a minute piece of glass and it went into her bloodstream and she died.
I hysterically clean and hoover if i smash a glass now. I dont even think it was true. To make it more frightening the story goes she was driving when she died and crashed the car. Im sure i was only about 8 when she told me.

My stupid dad also had no boundaries and let us watch anything from the video shop.. alive, towering inferno and one where a bridge broke and the cars rolled into the water.
I really dont like bridges and hold my breath on them since being really small.

A horror movie called Watership Down.

catscatscurrantscurrants · 03/11/2023 12:43

Worms. I used to dread having to walk to school after heavy rain. I still can't abide the sight of them.

BirthdayQuestions · 03/11/2023 12:45

The film Clue. Absolutely fucking terrified me as a kid for YEARS afterwards.

I watched it as therapy when I turned 30 and realised it's actually very funny. And then my 7 and 5 year old watched it recently against my better judgement, and totally loved it Confused

Please thank your relative! My sister has big triangular hair so it has given me many years of a pleasurable/mean nickname.

You might find your sister on this thread saying she’s terrified of you.

@SkaneTos "My father was renovating our newly bought house. I was 5 years old. He was working with the insulation material, that yellow fluffy stuff, and he told me that if would touch it, then it would itch FOREVER."
Not itch forever-but he was right to tell you not to touch it- it was fibreglass and not good for humans at all. His method was a bit extreme though!

I can certainly understand why he said what he said!

Wurzel Gummidge. I was terrified! As a kid he was always on the cover of the TV magazine Look-In which was constantly advertised on TV. I used to hide behind the setter when the ad came on!
