What were you scared of as a kid that wasn't meant to be scary?

For me it was Dastardly and Muttley. I have no idea why but I was terrified of them and if I woke up in the night to use the bathroom I used to run because I thought they were hiding in my attic and would snatch me and pull me up.

It's just funny looking back because they're not even scary characters and not meant to be😂

The flush!

NotMyCircusAnymore · 07/11/2023 21:44

@catchmewhenifall do you mean the toilet flush? I didn't like it either, seemed too loud. I remember being scared of flushing the loo at night in case it woke my parents up and made them angry with me for disturbing them. I never understood why flushes couldn't be silent .

Wee willy winky

NotMyCircusAnymore · 07/11/2023 21:56

@Imisscoffee2021 that was a weird rhyme. Why was he prancing round the streets in his nightwear? Bloody weird.

Don't get me started on Its Raining it's Pouring. I remember being very upset as to how the old man hurt his head (in bed? Wtf?) and then wouldn't wake up. Horrifying. .

I see someone else mentioned the test card. I had nightmares about the girl from it.

Also Gentle Ben (I didn't like the way he stood on his hind legs, it reminded me of the wolf on the front cover of my Ladybird Little Red Riding Hood book which terrified me).

And Boney M.

NotMyCircusAnymore · 07/11/2023 22:46

@HRTQueen the Disney version of Pinnochio was pretty disturbing too. Getting turned into a donkey?

HRTQueen · 07/11/2023 23:04

BBC 70’s adaptation of Pinocchio I can remember being deeply disturbed by it

I don't blame you! Hideous, hideous, hideous!

I expect we are all a bit scarred from our childhoods considering the TV we watched!

Tusk by Fleetwood Mac. The marching band in the big stadium. It just scared the wits out of me.

catscatscurrantscurrants · 08/11/2023 13:29

When I was tiny, there was a science fiction series on TV called Doomwatch. In one episode, a massive plague of rats hit the country, and there was a scene of them coming up through people's lavatories. I was petrified of sitting on the toilet for a very long time afterwards. Also, my mum used to tell me that I would get 'fever' if I looked at a dead bird. I would run past any that were around, covering my eyes, until I was in my teens and realised that she'd said it to stop a curious small child (me!) handling them too closely. I was a really anxious child!

Disneys Pinocchio terrified me. The donkey ears 🫣🫣. Also watership down. And dams for some reason which still make me shudder now as a grown woman.

Chubbymoo · 08/11/2023 22:38

Lenny Henry. He was on a kid’s Saturday morning show wearing a multi coloured incredibly tall hat, & would make this sound/ say this word…. It’s sounded like “oooooogie”.
I had to leave the room if I knew he was going to say it!!

Are you me? I feel the same about all of those!

I didn't like revolving doors, had a fear of being stuck in them. Lifts too.

Tractors. Not sure why but I couldn't go past one if in a field.
The Darleks from De Who.
The little lady up the St who used to wave to us out of her window. I used to think she wa a witch and would cross the road.
