Will you/did you request for your child to move out when they turn 18

And if not, will you request rent?

Thank you

No!
They didn't stop being my children when they became 18

Dita73 · 26/10/2023 00:33

No and No!

Definitely not, and no.

BarbDwyerHair · 26/10/2023 00:33

Also no and no.

Babyroobs · 26/10/2023 00:33

Of course not, who on earth would do this when there is a massive housing crisis and wages are low meaning many young people could not afford to move out even if they wanted to.

parateach · 26/10/2023 00:33

Also, I just realised I had accidentally posted this on AIBU. Sorry!
I requested for the thread to be moved

18 is a very arbitrary line.
For me with my parents the options for living at home were full time education for free, or working and paying rent. Didn't matter on age.

Marblessolveeverything · 26/10/2023 00:34

No because they hopefully will be attending third level and self funding social and wants. I will provide their needs until they secure a qualification, job or income.

MargaritaHargitaysLittleSister · 26/10/2023 00:35

Exactly that @Highlyflavouredgravy . I asked for rent from my elder 2 DC once they'd graduated and got jobs, so 21

HerRoyalNotness · 26/10/2023 00:35

No! They’re welcome in our home, their home, as long as they like! EighTEEN is not an adult despite what some might say. Although he’ll be off to uni at 18, but welcome back whenever

UnNiddeRides · 26/10/2023 00:36

Mine still live with me and they’re 23 & 25. I didn’t ask for a contribution to bills/food until they were in full-time employment.

cobden28 · 26/10/2023 00:38

If the child is in employment then they should either move out and start to pay their own way, including renting somewhere to live OR if they stay in the parental home they should most certainly pay rent to their parents.

DeeCeeCherry · 26/10/2023 00:39

No way.

My DC did pay from age 21 but a minimal amount, that was my choice. Never raised the amount. Id never have asked or expected them to leave at age 18.

BethDuttonsTwin · 26/10/2023 00:40

No, my kids can live with me as long as they want to. I'd never ask them to go, I would ask for rent if they're working though as I am a single parent and it would be essential if the household is to have a decent standard of living.

Consideringachange2023 · 26/10/2023 00:45

Eighteen is still so young, when I see the college kids they still look like fresh faced babies!
I wouldn’t expect my children to move out at 18, however context is essential here.

PercyPigInAWig · 26/10/2023 00:46

I was still at school when I was 18 so no I didn’t move out, and won’t be expecting DC to move out at that point.

I moved out at 20 to go to university abroad. My parents paid my rent whilst studying. After uni I lived with my parents for about 6 months and paid rent then. Looking back it was a tiny amount, they must have done it to try to teach me the value of money but it wasn’t anywhere near what a house share would cost.

I will probably be a bit stricter with DC about contributing, even if I’m saving the money for them.

PeloMom · 26/10/2023 00:47

I’d ask my DC to move out as everyone has to experience living by themselves and looking after a home. If they need financial help, I’ll provide it but they have to try make it on their own.

BrimfulOfMash · 26/10/2023 00:48

No, certainly not!

And I would not ask for any contribution until they have finished f/t education and are earning.

parateach · 26/10/2023 00:49

Would you consider asking for rent out of their student loan cruel?

Zapzep · 26/10/2023 00:50

Move out where using what? It depends on circumstances and financial circumstances. Would you just assume that they become homeless at 18 if they don’t have £150k to spare or £800 a month to spend on rent.

VeridicalVagabond · 26/10/2023 00:53

I wouldn't ask her to leave, and I wouldn't charge her rent. She's keen to go to university and spread her wings and explore the world, but she will always always have a home here with me if she wants or needs it. She's my child, she always will be.

Itwasamemo2 · 26/10/2023 00:55

My children boomeranged between Uni and living at home . All for different reasons . My youngest has now moved to Canada and the emptiness now of having all the children gone is immense . I did charge a very token rent,if they were earning but about £20 weekly.

CallieQ · 26/10/2023 00:57

Course not
They have a home here as long as they need it

POTC · 26/10/2023 00:58

No to the moving out
Sort of to the rent. When my eldest is home from uni in holidays he has to pay a contribution to the household funds. I receive help with my housing costs but am deemed as having an "extra bedroom" now he's at uni so am having to pay £65 per month for him to have his room to return to. On top of that it then costs me significantly more when he's home for electricity/gas and the food bill doubles! I simply cannot afford to cover all that so he has to make a small contribution towards the increased costs when he's home.
