Just for sat night chat, what job do you think holds the biggest kudos? I think probably a medical consultant or barrister... what do you think...

I’m a chief of staff. Sounds cool, actually means I spend a lot more time than I want dealing with other people’s problems.

Same. I love being the nexus but Jesus fuck, your tumble drier is your own business I’m afraid. Yes I know you’re the senior VP in legal but genuinely, economy 7 is not in my remit.

Hugosauras · 14/10/2023 21:18

Retired

hgfvhghh · 14/10/2023 21:19

Doesn't it just depend on who you know? A friend is pretty senior in the European Space Agency, my cousin is a paediatric oncologist, am a professor, know more senior lawyers than I care to think about, is it impressive? Not sure but by now, am mostly impressed by people who are happy with their life and can say something interesting about their job.

Cardiothoracic surgeon- to have the level of confidence that says “yep I’m the person who’ll fix all these crucial body parts, let me open up their body”

Lol, no he works for an American Bank

EtonMessy · 14/10/2023 21:23

Secretary General for the United Nations.
Anyone working on the ground for Médecins Sans Frontières or other such charities in disaster zones / humanitarian crises situations / conflict or war zones.
War Correspondent .

Vice Chancellors are pretty impressive. They are always in the news as people like to discuss whether they are being paid too much. However, some of them are leading universities with thousands of staff and millions of income every year. Institutional leaders of private sector companies with similar revenue would be getting paid far more.

I don't think it does depend on who you know. Lots of people will have an automatic wow response that they developed around certain titles or roles when they were young. I know lots of people in the roles I think are impressive. I don't always think those people are impressive 😄It's the perception of the role in society rather than my RL experience of surgeons being narcissistic cheating arses iyswim

EasternStandard · 14/10/2023 21:26

Something like head of NATO, which on googling is Secretary General

Head of (any) Surgery department in a major hospital

Prima ballerina

1st violin in major orchestra or maestro

Astonishing · 14/10/2023 21:26

My first job was as a geophysicist, I was not that impressive!

CEO has the opposite effect on me, everyone and the dog seems to be a CEO.

Not a job title but a degree title, a masters in oceanography used to make you a 'Master of Oceans' like some sort of trident wielding mermaid astride a dolphin. I think it's just bog standard master of science now.

StrandedStarfish · 14/10/2023 21:26

Ballerina

Ilovelblue · 14/10/2023 21:27

RAF fast jet pilot

Gwendimarco · 14/10/2023 21:29

CEO not so much for me. I know loads of people who have started up little online businesses like coaching, and they are all ‘CEO’s.

For me:
Pilot
Professor
Judge
Surgeon

And the ultimate has to be astronaut!

I also get the wow factor for jobs that require creative or physical talent, e.g. musician, athlete, dancer, actor, choreographer, scriptwriter etc.

High up military titles don’t do it for me, I‘m afraid I just assume (rightly or wrongly) that you come from a posh family.

Banned4life · 14/10/2023 21:30

Why has no one said VET?!?!? Vets are awesome - knowledge of loads of different animals!

EasternStandard · 14/10/2023 21:31

I also really love hearing top judges

Eg Justice of the Supreme Court

The use of language is so good

Poshjock · 14/10/2023 21:32

Pootles34 · 14/10/2023 20:33

Sea lord is a good one.

But is it then uncool to be the Second Sea Lord?

Gwendimarco · 14/10/2023 21:32

Oh actually. I’ve just thought of a better one.

A girl (now woman) I went to school with clears landmines with Halo. She has led teams in Syria, Afghanistan, Ukraine, she is a true hero.

Spendonsend · 14/10/2023 21:33

Chef de Mission. I met one and he was in charge of getting the olympic team together and out there.

titchy · 14/10/2023 21:35

CornishClott · 14/10/2023 20:56

I meant forensic cleaners , the ones who clean up blood, gore and human waste

Not after watching Greg Davies in The Cleaner you won't!

Astronaut
Chief Medical/scientific/Vet Officer
Ambassador

Homefry · 14/10/2023 21:36

Architect. Even Brad Pitt wishes he'd been one, so I've been told!

titchy · 14/10/2023 21:36

Oh yes to war correspondent.

Wishingwell57 · 14/10/2023 21:37

Dancer at the Moulin Rouge. You have to be at least 5'8"" with great legs, small tits and a pert bum. I'd never make it in a million years.
