Just for sat night chat, what job do you think holds the biggest kudos? I think probably a medical consultant or barrister... what do you think...

why? That's not a job.

It's unpaid, but still one of the most important and essential roles for society and takes enormous amounts of skill, effort and work.

still doesn't make it a job, or super impressive IMO. If that's the case then what about being a good sister or brother? Is that a super impressive job too? Nope, bc none of those things are jobs.

Wing commander is far more impressive sounding than the higher rank of Group Captain.

Not when it's shortened to WC it isn't!

All these teachers who say to children and their parents that they will never amount to much…..! So many. It’s astounding. They literally said it to the child and to the parent. All those teachers with a desire to be sacked and or punched in the face.
Astounding.

Yes it’s amazing isn’t it. Almost as if teachers aren’t spending the whole lesson prep, delivery and feedback looking for some way to the inspire kids. Nope they just write them off and happily state it publicly….

Absolutely tongue in cheek lovely!
One of the worst "jobs" out there. Might be out of touch, but I don't get it.
I understand "do what makes you happy." I think it really does generations before us a disservice and teaches children that you don't really need to use your brain to achieve in life. Surely most are finite in poularity, based on age, topic, etc, so they need a qualification or skill after that once their status fades.

@WoosMama13 i completely agree and its sad so many young people want to be influencers instead of normal careers.

A friend's daughter is a prima ballerina. I'm absolutely in awe of her photos on facebook. Nephew is a an airline captain - he's very ordinary in real life but I'm fascinated at his talent. I've met several barristers and I'm not that bothered!

I’m a chief of staff. Sounds cool, actually means I spend a lot more time than I want dealing with other people’s problems.

I’ve seen that title growing in popularity in finance world recently particularly in the US. What area do you work in please? Can you tell me what your role is or how you ended up as COS? I’m a director in operations role and trying to work out if COO or chief of staff would be the next progression. Thanks in advance!

Elodie09 · 16/10/2023 18:58

Anaesthetist. A bold job indeed, super impressive.

I’m in the civil service where we use titles a bit differently. Not sure my role will carry over to your world very well!

@eastegg

Nope. all barristers are keen to tell you they are barristers if they are socialising with non-barristers. It's exactly like that sketch with the brain surgeons.

The 'how can you defend someone when you are guilty' gets asked of all lawyers all the time. It makes no difference because the ego driver makes them want to tell everyone they are barristers/surgeons/pilots etc

All barristers including me? 😄. I avoid it, which you should be able to tell from my post.

Er... course you do. Even on an anonymous forum you can't actually help it. It's imbued into the barrister. runs through them like a stick of rock. Cf:

I agree this carries kudos. However, as a barrister, I’ve always disliked the term.

You said ‘when they are socialising with non barristers’. Of course I’ve mentioned it on here! An anonymous forum where it was directly relevant to what I was saying. Completely different from what you were clearly getting at, which was egotistically shoe horning it in in social settings. Saying it here and keeping schtum in many real life situations are completely consistent. No gotcha for you I’m afraid.

woofwoofandwoof · 16/10/2023 21:02

Saying it here and keeping schtum in many real life situations are completely consistent

Of course people wouldn't mention it in many real life situations. That's not my point. There is zero need to mention it on here at all save for the fact you think it gives you status and credibility. Which underpins all that I'm a brain surgeon at the cocktail party chat.

No gotcha for you I’m afraid.

I worry for your cross examination if you refer to 'gotcha' especially in this context. The jury will draw their own conclusions.

This is a Navy rank. They call their Drs and Dentists “Surgeon” Rank. It’s pretty cool. I’ve been dealing with a Surgeon Commodore recently.

When you first started talking about toxicology database I was thinking Toxbase then it got all Porton Down which is rock star cool

SM4713 · 14/10/2023 21:03

The problem is, that if you actually say your correct job title, majority of people have no idea what you do!
eg:
I'm a consultant neurologist. 'huh?'🤔I'm a brain surgeon! 'Ahh ok then' 😄

... You may have been told this but a consultant neurologist is not a brain surgeon. That's a consultant neurosurgeon.
