Just for sat night chat, what job do you think holds the biggest kudos? I think probably a medical consultant or barrister... what do you think...

I know a few geophysicists, sadly for them it’s mostly about knowing systems rather than the actual ‘geophysics’.

Hollywood Actress ( purely for the money : effort ratio and being a household name )
Rocket scientist, brain surgeon, quantum physicist (for intelligence)
Composer (successful ones for creativity, sounds more highbrow than songwriter!)

Supreme Leader

sadgapyearmum · 14/10/2023 21:41

Two pilots are friends of mine. They are both really nice people but very ordinary

JaneyGee · 14/10/2023 21:42

Surgeon or Professor.

I’d also be quite impressed by an officer in an elite regiment (Royal Marines, Paras, etc) or by someone in the SAS.

twostraws · 14/10/2023 21:43

Doctor. Especially one who works in an A&E.

Ultimately, the most impressive thing is being able to save a life. Followed closely by being able to pick yourself up and keep going when it doesn't work out.

I have a high-pressure high-stress job, but I couldn't imagine being responsible for whether someone lives or dies.

ramamamadingdong · 14/10/2023 21:46

I knew someone once whose title was Head of Knowledge, which I thought was pretty impressive.

ActDottie · 14/10/2023 21:46

Definitely not barristers. But anything medical I always think wow just because it’s something I’d never be able to do or cope with.

I think professor as well because that’s so much commitment to a subject it’s amazing.

Torganer · 14/10/2023 21:46

I work in architecture/engineering, so I’m in awe of jobs I cannot fathom doing.

SEN teacher

Incident cleaner (no idea what the job title is), but those who clear up after murders, death on railway lines etc

Any animal related job - I had a friend who was ‘Head of Bats’, we used to call her Batgirl!!

We have these in our company, sadly they are anything but 😂

Not so impressed by leadership roles.

RJ2023 · 14/10/2023 21:53

Pilot in the Red Arrows.

The driver(s) of the Flying Scotsman steam engine.

SloraceHughorn · 14/10/2023 21:53

Doctors, especially obstetricians, neonatologists, A&E doctors and GPs.

Not just because they're usually quite clever but because of the level of hard work and compassion required.

Middleagedmeangirls · 14/10/2023 21:53

For me it would be CEO or Actuary. Or any sort of surgeon.

i used to be super impressed by Psychotherapist but I've now qualified in that field so it isn't as impressive to me.

I just describe myself as a former soldier. When pressed, I do give my rank which was fairly senior. People say "Wow! Did everyone call you Ma'am? You must have been really important."
"Well, I was addressed as Ma'am but I much preferred being called by my rank and name. My soldiers just called me 'boss' which I was much more comfortable with." Goodness knows why people are so impressed. I was just a soldier doing a job.

alrighthen · 14/10/2023 21:55

For me; medical consultant or concert pianist

alrighthen · 14/10/2023 21:57

I forgot Aid Worker. God's work, that.

Any jobs in medicine, I met a brain surgeon at a drinks party once and he was fascinating

honeylulu · 14/10/2023 21:57

I'm a solicitor so i know a lot of barristers and I'm a long way past being wowed (no slight on them, some are really excellent) but legal careers seem a bit ordinary.

I would say for me it would be careers which are exciting or unusual. People who work in theatre I find fascinating. We also met someone on holiday who was a professional stunt man - thought that was really cool. Oh and I know someone whose job title is Caretaker of the Royal Palaces which sounds like an amazing job ... and there's only one of her!

Indeed. Yes.

Papillon23 · 14/10/2023 21:58

I saw a job ad for Head of Uncertainty a while back. Not sure it wins most prestigious job title but it was certainly one that made me read the advert!

Pinkpinkplonk · 14/10/2023 22:01

I’m a surgeon and prof. Trust me I’m also a mum and very ordinary, most parents at school don’t know what I do.
Astronaught is what I’d dream to be….
