Just for sat night chat, what job do you think holds the biggest kudos? I think probably a medical consultant or barrister... what do you think...

I'll take your sea Lord and raise you...The First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff.

That's one person. Respect.

Ilikeyourdecor · 14/10/2023 22:04

Jobs which would make me go "wow! Tell me more!" are:

Astronaut
Spy
War correspondent / charity worker in a war zone
Hostage negotiator / peace negotiator
Roller-coaster designer
Olympic ski jumper
Forensic diver / maritime archaeologist / professional free diver
Circus hair-hanger

Mostly stuff that is dangerous and difficult and/or rare!

Doyouthinktheyknow · 14/10/2023 22:04

Captain of a ship does impress me a little.
And then I think of the pilots who swoop in to navigate the big ships in to ports, that is impressive that you are needed and able to do that.
And anyone super talented, like an artist who makes their living from their art, be it painting, music, dance etc….

Iamacatslave · 14/10/2023 22:04

Astronaut.

I saw a job ad for Head of Uncertainty a while back. Not sure it wins most prestigious job title but it was certainly one that made me read the advert!

Sounds like a job in the comedy WC1A!

Duckskitbank · 14/10/2023 22:05

Astronaut
Ranger in a safari camp
Circus performer

I’m always slightly awed by people who have made their hobby into a successful career- artists, musicians, etc.

Whistleblower would definitely wow me, it shows a lot of bravery and integrity.

Badlands1 · 14/10/2023 22:06

FFS at all the surgeons appearing on this thread!

After 10 minutes working with them you would never want to see another.@Pinkpinkplonk excluded of course.

I’m a surgeon and prof. Trust me I’m also a mum and very ordinary, most parents at school don’t know what I do.
Astronaught is what I’d dream to be….
What’s a sea Lord?

The First Sea Lord is head of the Royal Navy. The Second Sea Lord is his deputy. Because the RN has been around a long time, the senior people have fancy titles. It's a bit like the Royal Household - what exactly does 'Gold Stick in Waiting' do and how long do they have to wait?

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 14/10/2023 22:08

Barrister (also solicitor, lawyer) and most finance related jobs don’t have a particularly high wow factor IMO.

midwife is definitely a job I find very impressive. I’m also rather fascinated by space. Astrophysicist or Astronaut therefore would have a massive wow factor imo.

whoever manages to fix our IT problem when everything is down.

objetively speaking? An elected head of state and or governmental leader probably would probably demand respect in most situations. But those aren’t really jobs in the traditional sense (and politician doesn’t have a particularly high wow factor either, tbh).

DNLove · 14/10/2023 22:10

Oncologist or any other doctor or research scientist working in cancer field.

Changes17 · 14/10/2023 22:10

DS currently wants to be an astrophysicist- nice to hear it has kudos.

One startup I worked at let people of a certain seniority choose their own titles - head of Earth and planets mentioned above would be a good one (though possibly a bit too bit serious!)

RunAwayTurnAwayRunAwayTurnAway · 14/10/2023 22:11
  • Diplomat
  • Foreign Consul Staff

But mostly,

  • Christine Lagarde.
Floopyfloop · 14/10/2023 22:11

Lord lieutenant

Narwhalsh · 14/10/2023 22:12

Geophysicists around the world will be amazed at how much airtime they’ve managed to get on MN 😂

Pinkpinkplonk · 14/10/2023 22:13

@Badlands1 I agree!

nodneat · 14/10/2023 22:14

call centre worker

Astrabees · 14/10/2023 22:14

Equine vet, commercial pilot, governor of the Bank of England do it for me .

Floopyfloop · 14/10/2023 22:15

Architect

kopitiamgal · 14/10/2023 22:15

The only people whose jobs I'd be impressed by won't be allowed to tell me their profession.

LemonyTicket · 14/10/2023 22:15

My husband is a human rights barrister. I am not going to lie, it's still sexy

BlowDryRat · 14/10/2023 22:16

Astronaut

itsallfunand · 14/10/2023 22:17

Pilot
Consultant/surgeons

sep135 · 14/10/2023 22:18

My consultant friends tell me there's a distinct pecking order of surgeons with orthopaedic surgeons at the bottom apparently. Just before my hip replacement, mine kept making jokes about my 'petite' hips and his large agricultural hands (not entirely reassuring) but I gather they're often called the carpenters. I know a paediatric heart surgeon and he's very impressive.

I'm an ex investment banker so lawyers and bankers would be ten a penny. Met some very impressive private equity directors though, and in my current role, fund managers. In terms of a fun night out, I'd probably pick litigation lawyers as they're entertaining but in a feisty way.

2010Aussie · 14/10/2023 22:21

kopitiamgal · 14/10/2023 22:15

The only people whose jobs I'd be impressed by won't be allowed to tell me their profession.

They usually say that they work for the Foreign Office in some routine job. There's always a cover story.

tachetastic · 14/10/2023 22:21

For wow factor, hollywood movie star or member of the royal family would be hard to beat.

As to what I am impressed by, I would say a coffee shop or book shop owner that is actually making a living.

That's the life I dream of..........
