Tonight I’m handing in my notice with immediate effect.

I’m so miserable here.

The job requires me being in two different places at once (today it was three).

I’m totally unsupported.

The person who works below me hangs around outside smoking for most of the day.

My job is largely dependent on other people doing things, if they don’t do it I can’t do my job, but I get moaned at if it’s not done.

Everyone says my name wrong.

It’s just awful. Been here three hours and I’ve already cried.

So, once my day is over I’m emailing that I won’t be coming back.

Any tips?

I sent the email to the email address I always use.

I usually email her daily.

If she’s not seen it then it’s not my problem. I’m still leaving.

Actually it is because there will be a process for resignation. Check it. Because if you haven’t tendered resignation appropriately you haven’t done it.

ImNotWhoYouThink · 11/10/2023 20:00

A friend did this. She posted the office key through the door in an envelope saying “I can’t stand working here. Goodbye.” If you can afford to do this before starting a new job, do it. Life is short, good luck.

SpeedbirdSquawker · 11/10/2023 20:18

Loads of people on here are telling you just to walk out but would you get paid if you walk away now and resign with immediate effect?

Doyouthinktheyknow · 11/10/2023 20:32

Well done op, life is too short to be stuck in an awful job!

When I was very young I just left a job and never returned. It was the world’s worst care home and I simply couldn’t not do another shift. I was very young and with hindsight I should have reported my concerns to the CQC but I just left, knowing I couldn’t be part of the awful practices I saw. No one hitting patients but just really poor quality care.

I’m much older and wiser now and try to avoid burning bridges with anyone now. If you can work your notice you may feel better for it but if you can’t, you can self certify so can walk away with integrity either way.

Good luck for your next role.

Of course she wouldn’t ger paid.

Pretty sure she should still get paid for the hours worked already. Not sure employers can withhold wages just because you don’t work your notice.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 11/10/2023 22:26

Yes, this is also a care home with really poor quality care. I’ve seen several things which have astounded me.

A lot of the staff have been there for years so I guess they’re used to it.

It was sold to me as a ‘premium’ home, all fancy and lovely. It’s not. The bits that visitors don’t see are eye-opening.

I've yet to meet a home that doesn't promise the earth, yet disappoint on at least 50%. Focus on your client group as well as your leave date to keep you going. I'm sure they appreciate what you do. Good luck in the new job.

Bollockypiddle · 11/10/2023 22:43

You've done the right thing OP, don't forget that (think I was on your last thread, under a different name). Well done for getting another job sorted out! If you've a conditional offer and you know you'll pass the dbs, you're pretty much home and dry. You can always come down with a stomach bug or something, wouldn't need a sick note and there's nothing they can do.

You could probably do with a few days rest, legitimately for your mental health, ready for a fresh start. If the worst comes to worst and the new offer falls through for some bizarre reason, I'm certain you'd pick up agency work with no trouble at all. We need more people like you in these jobs, it's all going to be fine. 🙂

IncognitoMam · 11/10/2023 22:53

Are you reporting them to CQC?

Best of luck. I've worked in places where I couldn't wait to leave. I've been in a great place now for a few years so there is hope.

Your mental health is so important.

JFDIYOLO · 11/10/2023 23:45

Your mental health is your top concern - well done for protecting it.

The safety and wellbeing of the residents and staff matter too, and it looks like the place is compromising that.

Please would you report your concerns to whichever organisations if any regulate them?

This week should be souch better knowing the end is in sight! You're picking up as much salary as possible. Any leave left?

I'd be speaking to colleagues about what conditions drove you to move on. They may have similar concerns and your action may spur them to get something done about it.

Report it, please. See if you can help the poor residents as you go.

Eggybready · 12/10/2023 06:18

Sadly i knew this would be a care home..
Care homes can be the most wonderful places when run correctly. Unfortunately most of them arent..
Almost always short staffed and "care" is an afterthought. They are run as a money maker first and if by chance the care given is decent well that's a bonus.
I worked my arse off trying to give the best possible care i could and at times i dont know how i actually managed it. Night shift with 40 residents and just me and an agency 😭 springs to mind.. more than once
Its not as easy to just walk out as the residents need us so well done OP and i hope the new job will value you and the work you do

Eggybready · 12/10/2023 06:20

And yes report the home.. sadly i also know that it might make no difference but i would still do it

Dibbydoos · 12/10/2023 06:50

Anonymous report to the local authority wouldn't go amiss about the care home too.

Best of luck @TheLightSideOfTheMoon noone should be ill because of work.

Mamasharp97 · 12/10/2023 07:21

Ask your GP to sign you off with stress/MH for your notice period x

Doyouthinktheyknow · 12/10/2023 07:33

Please do report to CQC op, I think it’s very easy to do these days online.

There are too many awful care homes out there, it’s very sad. I did work in a decent one for a few years before moving to the NHS but before that, my experiences were really quite shocking.

NHS has major issues but standards of care are so much higher, where I work anyway.

I once started work for a credit card company. After about 5 hours I just got up and walked out, when I got home I rang reception and said please tell my boss I've left and I'm not coming back. Never heard back from them.

5 hours?!

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 12/10/2023 07:54

Today I’m going to ask if I can make Sunday my last day. (And check she actually read the email.)

My colleague (the one who enjoys cigarette breaks) is back on Monday and I don’t see why they need me.

I’ve mostly done the job alone while she smokes so she can do it alone while I sit at home and drink tea.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 12/10/2023 07:54

I can’t face another six days.

I just can’t.

Errolwasahero · 12/10/2023 08:04

Op you can self certify for sickness for 5 days; just call in sick. Even see your gp if you want to be signed off so you have that for your next job if they query it. Take some time for yourself x

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 12/10/2023 08:30

If I go off sick I don’t get paid. Realistically I do need to be paid. At least for another four days (paid about £100 a day), then I have back up if there’s delay with the new job.

I also want to tie up any loose ends and complete a few things I started. Then I can leave with pride. (And it makes life easier for the next person who does my job).

Am still crying at the thought of going in though. Will be on MN a lot today, just to get me through…

I've worked in care settings where people have endless ciggy breaks. Is there a manager or senior on shift? I'd feign sickness and that you need regular breaks in the staff room. They won't send you home but you can at least rest. Take headphones and do guided meditation off YouTube. Some are only 5 minutes. You do them seated.

PepperRed · 12/10/2023 10:41

Good luck. I really hope you find a caring organisation to work for.

sundaymorningbliss · 12/10/2023 10:46

Sending you virtual hugs x
