Tonight I’m handing in my notice with immediate effect.

I’m so miserable here.

The job requires me being in two different places at once (today it was three).

I’m totally unsupported.

The person who works below me hangs around outside smoking for most of the day.

My job is largely dependent on other people doing things, if they don’t do it I can’t do my job, but I get moaned at if it’s not done.

Everyone says my name wrong.

It’s just awful. Been here three hours and I’ve already cried.

So, once my day is over I’m emailing that I won’t be coming back.

Any tips?

Go home with a migraine.
You can decide what to do later.
I wouldn't resign until the other job is in the bag.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 10/10/2023 13:31

Okay, I’ve just given a week’s notice. Said I’ll stay until next Tuesday.

Should’ve said Monday. But never mind.

I wouldn’t even wait til the end of the shift just leave now if it’s making you that bad, no job is worth that op.

1month · 10/10/2023 13:33

You can always call in sick on Monday if needs be or when you get home change it to Monday.

Abitslow · 10/10/2023 13:43

Just thought of my friend he walked out of his job last year just got up got his coat and walked out.
Told the boss to go f* himself.
He went to town and got a coffee lol never went back.
He was there for 8 weeks and he just could not put up with the dramas of the boss shouting over the smallest things he was just an angry man all the time.
Like walking on eggshells.
He got a new job much happier now.
Two others left after my friend left i believe many more left after.

You can self certify off sick for 7 days so just say you're ill.

Bluetrews25 · 10/10/2023 14:10

Google 'resignation letter when you don't want to work your notice period'.

It helped me (years ago) create a letter citing 'toxic work atmosphere' and pressure on my mental health, so they agreed to let me go with a few days' notice rather than 2 months. Thankfully my other job was already in the bag and just waiting for me to tell them when I could start.

Best of luck
No-one should be treated like that.

Ah sorry, missed your update.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 10/10/2023 14:11

My DBS is on the update service so that should be speedy.

I’ve done everything properly so there shouldn’t be an issue. Although she hasn’t responded to the email yet.

Bluetrews25 · 10/10/2023 14:13

If you subscribe to the update service then just give your new place the details and they can check it instantly. There shouldn't be any waiting.

NumberTheory · 10/10/2023 14:15

RowenaEllis · 10/10/2023 13:21

You can self certify for a week so give your notice today and call in sick tomorrow.
Not sure why people think leaving in your probation period would be 'gross misconduct and dismissal'. You can't dismiss someone who has left and it's certainly not gross misconduct to leave a job without notice. Even if it was - what do you think could be done about it??

Gross misconduct to walk out in the middle of a shift without good cause or permission. Not gross misconduct to end your contract.

The “what can be done?” is that they can provide a truthful reference if asked about your employment in the future (which may be necessary if you work in an area which requires DBS checks) and that could put future employers off you.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 10/10/2023 14:32

OP do you have any holiday owing? You might not need to work next week anyway.

In any event it's probably "tidier" for them to let you go at the end of Friday.

To what end, though? Proving gross misconduct and making it stick takes time and effort; it requires a disciplinary process. OP is a probationer not even three months into the job! Why would they go through all that? Just so they can give the dreaded Bad Reference? It’s a hell of a lot of effort for a rather pointless outcome.

A surprisingly high number of MNers seem to believe vengeful ex-bosses spend their days crafting highly detailed and incredibly damning references, cackling with Machiavellian glee. In reality, most references these days are “I can confirm Janet Wilson held the position of Chief Turd Polisher between these dates”. If you’ve defrauded the company or smashed the place up on your last day, then yes, they might indeed go to the trouble of trying to fuck up your new job for you. No one is going to be hellbent on revenge on a probationer who didn’t work their last week’s notice.

That's good then!

CherryMaDeara · 10/10/2023 14:54

Let us know how you've responded.

Do you feel like a weight's off now you've handed in notice?

That they wouldn’t go through the process (and I agree they would not) doesn’t mean that the walking off the job like that wouldn’t be gross misconduct. And while they couldn’t say she was fired for gross misconduct they could state the circumstances in which she left.

bonzaitree · 10/10/2023 14:59

Well done OP!

Just chill over the next few days. No need to work too hard 😉

KnickerlessParsons · 10/10/2023 15:01

Go home now. If they ask "where's
Mary?" Say "no idea, my name is Maria/Susan/whatever".

fishfingersandtoes · 10/10/2023 15:01

Good for you!

Selfishlazyme · 10/10/2023 15:03

Hope you’re ok OP, I’ve sat where you are with an email ready to send.
Just go on sick leave to buy yourself some time, only resign when you are about to start a new job xxx

Woodenwonder · 10/10/2023 15:03

Leaving a job during probation is anything but gross misconduct. It's a probation period, which means that a job offer is not set in stone, effectively. And as such, its a probation period for the employee to decide too if they like their job role. Yes it might be stated that they need to give a weeks notice (and she has). She's better than me, I'd have walked and not looked back - done it twice and never had any issue in securing any role immediately after. We're not robots, we're people and capable people won't stay where they are undervalued. Leaving is a power move.

Not sure why people are saying DBS has got anything to do with former employers - it doesn't.

Wtfnowseptember · 10/10/2023 15:08

You might have accrued 3 or 4 days annual leave. Don't work those days.

And well done for sending that email.

To new pastures and a work life where people respect you (starting with saying your name right!)

coolkatt · 10/10/2023 15:14

listen. to who needs to hear this. this a job and it is just that. just that. a fuxking job. you're just a number no matter what ur job is and ur position. YOUR MENTAL HEALTH IS WAY MORE
IMPORTANT and yes i did shout that to everyone scaremongering this poor woman. so what if it's gross misconduct, so is how they are making this woman feel. if you have not been in a position like this then so fk if is is against policy, this work pressure is how people kill themselves. it rumbles and rumbles till a person can't take it anymore and then they are gone. dead. and that position is filled within a week. people die over this kind of
stuff. it's a bloody job not the end of the world.

op i'm glad you have handed your notice in. if you feel you can write a letter stating your reasons for leaving and be honest. and if you can't it's fine too. it's not long till 5pm!! keep going and then your on a countdown!! wel
done for sticking it out! respect!! and i hope you r new post helps you loads and is not as unprofessional as this one seems. look after yourself.

supplycaptain · 10/10/2023 15:16

I really relate to your challenges. I have been in my new post for a few months and already am job hunting. Not in a position to leave without a job lined up, wish I had the bravery to hand my notice in! I hope it all falls in place for you
