Tonight I’m handing in my notice with immediate effect.

I’m so miserable here.

The job requires me being in two different places at once (today it was three).

I’m totally unsupported.

The person who works below me hangs around outside smoking for most of the day.

My job is largely dependent on other people doing things, if they don’t do it I can’t do my job, but I get moaned at if it’s not done.

Everyone says my name wrong.

It’s just awful. Been here three hours and I’ve already cried.

So, once my day is over I’m emailing that I won’t be coming back.

Any tips?

No job is worth your MH. So many ppl i know are changing jobs or leaving without one due to being burnt out. Life is short. Hope youre ok.

iovebread · 10/10/2023 15:30

can you use up your sick leave first? since it's clearly a mental health impact. defo see your GP and get that PAID time off.

Good luck!

whatausername · 10/10/2023 15:40

Well done, OP, for doing what is best for you whilst remaining professional and not burning bridges. Bring on 5pm!

FartSock5000 · 10/10/2023 15:51

@TheLightSideOfTheMoon now that you've given notice, step back.

Don't worry about the little things. That person who goes out for extended cig breaks? Email you manager:

"Hi X, I won't be able to finish TASK today. Y has been on an extended break and now there isn't enough time to complete it. Thanks."

They chase you for work not done:
"Thank you for bringing that to my attention." That's it. No excuses. Nothing.

That cig break womper strolls in 20mins later than she should have:
"I've not done X and Y. You'll have to now." and email her to delegate those ccing in manager-

"Hi X, due to your extended time away, I won't be able to complete TASK1 and TASK2 so these are now waiting for you to complete. Let MANAGER know when you are done so communication is kept open. Thank you."

You are one foot out the door! Dobby is free! They have no power over you anymore.

Slow you pace down, enjoy yourself more and do not worry about how others think or feel.

You can sit there with 50 unfinished tasks and it doesn't matter because you are leaving. You don't have to care anymore.

Once you give yourself permission to stop caring, you will feel so much better.

ElleCapitaine · 10/10/2023 15:58

If you’ve been there 10 weeks you may have 3 or 4 days annual leave to take if you haven’t already taken it. That means although your last day would be next Tuesday, technically you would leave on this Thursday or Friday - check with HR.

itsalongwaybackfromsorry · 10/10/2023 16:18

Take any annual leave you have and say you won't be back.

Or go off sick and resign when your DBS comes through for your new job.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 10/10/2023 16:47

I’ve already taken three days of A/L so I’m not expecting to be owed anything.

It’s cool. I will work another week - at least the end is in sight.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 10/10/2023 17:45

Not sure why people are saying DBS has got anything to do with former employers - it doesn't

It's more to do with the fact that if a job requires a DBS they are also more likely to take up references and possibly even phone people to get past the "Jane worked between June and August as Chief Candlestick Maker" reference which says nothing. So if someone phoned the Master Candlestick Maker they'd say Jane walked out without giving proper notice and left us in the lurch. It could happen in other jobs too of course, but just seems more likely if you need a DBS as you need to check employment history more carefully too.

ErcolSofa · 11/10/2023 08:41

Jobs that require a DBS typically require a full work history with no gaps, often ask if you have ever been dismissed and sometimes go back to all previous employers within a time frame (2-5 years)

So it isn't about the DBS but about the recruitment processes for the type of job that requires a DBS.

all this without the passive aggressive and unnecessary throwing someone else under the bus. You're leaving, it's not your fight anymore.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 11/10/2023 10:53

She’s not responded to my email.

I’m going to finish off any work, email anyone who needs to know that I’m leaving and make sure any paperwork is up together.

I’ve decided to be nice about it, there’s an end in sight - I think that’s enough.

Although if anyone else is a dick to me I will just walk out.

I’ve already removed any possessions. The only thing left is my mug.

Well done for sticking it out for so long! Just one thing, are you sure your manager received your email notice? I've been known to send important messages accidentally to the wrong email address and only realised my mistake because I've set my mail up for a delivery status notification.
Good luck in your new job!

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 11/10/2023 13:08

I sent the email to the email address I always use.

I usually email her daily.

If she’s not seen it then it’s not my problem. I’m still leaving.

OP posts:
enchantedsquirrelwood · 11/10/2023 13:23

It might be worth forwarding it to your HR department to make sure it is actioned (if you have an HR team).

To make sure you get paid, amongst other things.

I changed jobs a couple of months ago. I put my notice in to HR at 5pm and to my manager who was on holiday and I know turns his notifications off. No one noticed by the next time I was in then I had holiday 🤷‍♀️ fuck em tbh. I'd tried to discuss my issues and got ignored so I just left.

Apparently the store manager was really upset and keeps asking my husband if I am happy in my new job and that there is always a job for me 🤣🤣 shame he wasn't so accommodating when I worked there!

CloakandDagger1 · 11/10/2023 14:19

Just tell your Manager its affecting your mental health and say you need to leave or you'll break down.
Employers have to be super careful around mental health these days and so everything is on your side.
Or...wait till 5, leave your letter of res. and go.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 11/10/2023 14:32

I think financially it would be sensible to see out the weeks.

It means I can cover bills and stuff without worrying about them.

Never leave a job on a bad note. Glad you've got another job lined up

hellohelp · 11/10/2023 14:51

You can breathe a big sigh of relief now

HayleyDD73 · 11/10/2023 18:43

Never make the mistake of packing in one job before you get another - been there, done that. In fact, I feel the same as you about my current job: I dislike it for many reasons but I never used to. I am not willing to go without an income until I find another job. Bills cannot be paid on fresh air.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 11/10/2023 18:47

I've read your updates op and it sounds like you've done the right thing. Just get through these last few days then never look back. Plenty of toilet breaks whenever you feel overwhelmed. I've had jobs in the past where I spent ages crying in the toilets, and sometimes even at my desk in front of everyone. Life's too short its not worth it. Never ever again for me.

HayleyDD73 · 11/10/2023 18:48

Usually, annual leave can be taken after 12 weeks rather than 10: this is normally when the probationary period ends.

HayleyDD73 · 11/10/2023 18:50

Sounds like they now realise they have lost a good employee - too bad.

Dominoeffecter · 11/10/2023 18:54

Their loss, well done for stickiit out this long!

if you have already used part of your A/L depending on company policy, you may have to refund that amout to the company
