Tonight I’m handing in my notice with immediate effect.

I’m so miserable here.

The job requires me being in two different places at once (today it was three).

I’m totally unsupported.

The person who works below me hangs around outside smoking for most of the day.

My job is largely dependent on other people doing things, if they don’t do it I can’t do my job, but I get moaned at if it’s not done.

Everyone says my name wrong.

It’s just awful. Been here three hours and I’ve already cried.

So, once my day is over I’m emailing that I won’t be coming back.

Any tips?

You should just go, don't even care what they think. Say you've been sick just now and go do something nice for yourself. Hope you're OK

BadBadDecisions · 10/10/2023 12:35

You're doing what I should have done a few months ago.

I'm proud of you.

UnDruidlyWords · 10/10/2023 12:39

Years ago, I walked out of a job part way through the day as the entire place and everyone in it was driving me crazy. Got a load of stuff done so there wouldn't be a panic when people realised I'd gone, then left a message on the staff notice board saying 'I'm going home and I'm not coming back'. That was it, sanity restored.

I wish you luck, OP!

Have done the same. Financial director screaming at me down the phone later that evening was a small price to pay never to have to see any of those crazies again.

Branleuse · 10/10/2023 12:52

Call office and explain that you've been given two shifts at same time and what do they expect you to do.

TheShellBeach · 10/10/2023 13:00

OP do you mean you only started today? You say you've been there three hours and already cried - if you only started today just walk out.

anon0007 · 10/10/2023 13:01

Leave and email your notice in.

TheShellBeach · 10/10/2023 13:02

I've walked out of two jobs which were doing my head in and it was so liberating, just to go up to the boss and say, okay, I've packed my stuff up and I'm going.
Cheery-Bye!

fuckssaaaaake · 10/10/2023 13:02

I had a selfish girl leave with no notice (you are def not selfish by the way; but mine was). And I will refuse to give her a reference, just so you know, be careful as the bitterness from their end may result in this too

SofiYol · 10/10/2023 13:09

No it’s not terrible advice. The OP is suffering badly with her mental health because of this awful job.

She has another job lined up and must be able to manage until then or she wouldn’t be leaving. Being signed off won’t look good if she has to declare sickness in her new role.

I would walk out. Nothing is worth your mental health. Get your things, leave and email from home. I hope you feel better soon.

You don't have to make a scene.

Just put your things in your back.

Take a deep breath

Stand up and walk out.

Believe me it's the most liberating thing you can do! I have experience!

This. I was bullied by a senior member of staff in a job before. I was sat in the staff room when she came in, interrupted my unpaid break, and started to yell at me in front of my colleagues. I calmly got up, put on my coat, picked up my bag and walked out. I had, however, logged every instance of bullying that had taken place in the couple of weeks leading up to this. That evening I emailed all of my notes to the managing director of the company. It did lead to the staff member being dismissed but I never set foot back in the toxic place. Just walk out OP, go and enjoy your day. Good luck!

CeeChynaa · 10/10/2023 13:14

Want me to ring you and fake an emergency, I've done that for a mate before!

I love MN😂😂😂

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 10/10/2023 13:14

I’ve been here about ten weeks.

I need to give a week’s notice as I’m in my probation period.

You guys are making me think I should give a week’s notice and stick it out.

Or give a week’s notice and get signed off.

Lots of poor advice
dont leave as that would be gross misconduct and dismissal

if you have a job where you require a dbs then work history matters and dismissal may have to be declared as part of a recruitment

Agree with this!! The employer may refuse to give a reference for the next job.

Gettingbysomehow · 10/10/2023 13:16

I once started work for a credit card company. After about 5 hours I just got up and walked out, when I got home I rang reception and said please tell my boss I've left and I'm not coming back. Never heard back from them.

You choose which one, if you really are suffering then go sick, if you think you can do the week, then do it.

Ring in tomorrow and get signed off for the rest of your notice.

1month · 10/10/2023 13:17

I would wait until you have a start date for your new job and then leave.

Leaving now means you’ll have no income and it could mess you up.

Just try not to worry too much about this job.
If you can’t do it well, then you can’t do it well.

Just turn up, do the minimum and get paid.

Hopefully your new job will start asap!

enchantedsquirrelwood · 10/10/2023 13:18

I would wait until the other job is confirmed.

Then give your week's notice. If you have any annual leave owing you can take it during that week and work any other days.

Sick leave has to be disclosed to future employers too, I'd prefer to avoid taking any if possible, but it depends if you can cope with another week or two of this.

How long are DBS checks currently taking?

RowenaEllis · 10/10/2023 13:21

You can self certify for a week so give your notice today and call in sick tomorrow.
Not sure why people think leaving in your probation period would be 'gross misconduct and dismissal'. You can't dismiss someone who has left and it's certainly not gross misconduct to leave a job without notice. Even if it was - what do you think could be done about it??

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 10/10/2023 13:22

DBS checks seem to be taking an age at the moment - we've been waiting for potential employees for over 2 months so if you can afford to wait should it be delayed then, yes, leave.

youcandanceifyouwanna · 10/10/2023 13:23

The fact you're on probation changes things. You probably won't be entitled to sick pay and they could just end your contract saying you haven't passed probation. I'd just hand in my notice and say I'd found another job.

Abitslow · 10/10/2023 13:25

I feel your pain i really do.
Many years ago i worked in a place i did not feel welcome very toxic it was the most boring job ive ever done but i needed the pay.
One day i went and just spent the day as normal but I knew it was gonna be my last day the boss was toxic hell.
I did not say anything i finished my day and never went back no letter no notice no nothing i just left blocked all numbers.
Took me a month to find a new job and I'm still working there 20 years on love it.

Lengokengo · 10/10/2023 13:25

I remember your other thread on this.

Congratulations! you stuck on in there until you could safely extract yourself. I am so glad to hear that you have either job nearly in the bag. For peace of mind I would probably resign today, but I see others advising about going off sick etc.

Do what you feel you can to get through. Since it’s a week notice, then this time next week you will be free! Fingers crossed about the other job final checks.

In a few months time this will be a distant memory.

Milknosugarta · 10/10/2023 13:27

If you haven't completed your probation they might waive the notice period anyway. Good luck! Been there, it's miserable. Mine was an insurance call centre, it was awful.
