The trouble as I see it is that Hamas wants an Islamic state. And Israel wants a Jewish state. I freely acknowledge that Hamas are fanatical terrorists.
I'm sure there's a lot more to it, but both notions seem problematic to me. I've always been bothered by the idea of the Jewish people being God's chosen people. And having a term for non -Jews. I appreciate this is a simplistic understanding but it feels well, exclusionary.
I have no faith, but support other people in their religious practices as far as possible. I tell other faithless people off if they're being disrespectful about religious practices. But claiming land as a god-given right has always instinctively bothered me. And it seems very convenient for Europe and America that the promised land isn't part of Europe or America.
Not all Jewish people are zionists. Apparently some Orthodox Jews are not in favour of the state of Israel.
But the current state has been occupied by European Jews for a couple of generations now. So it's just all a huge mess.
