Afternoon. Just home from work, taking ds to training then I'll be back to catch up. Thanks for new thread.

newnamethanks · 10/10/2023 16:08

That was alarming, BadKitten, given the current circumstances, very poor security. Compared to the lacklustre Manchester effort, I thought the speech was hopeful. Bring back Sure Start, definitely.

AdamRyan · 10/10/2023 12:21

Bringing back Sure Start I think is a vote winner for people my age too - we had children when sure start was there who are leaving secondary now and can see the impact of their removal

Absolutely.

My ds is 19 now. We returned to uk when he was 2. Sure start was my saviour. Especially because he has disabilities.

DuncinToffee · 10/10/2023 18:06

I only caught a few minutes of the speech and did wonder why he was covered in glitter. I will watch the full speech later.

Caught up with the Starmers speech - really liked the vision of government facilitating working people, ie sorting out the shit we don't want to have to worry about so we can focus on work/family/plans.
It's a more hopeful vision although I don't think there is any pretence of sunlit uplands.
Very interested the "grey belt" and more technical colleges.

The security was abysmal - God knows I've ranted about enough MPs but as a minimum we should be keeping them safe.

newnamethanks · 10/10/2023 20:27

It was refreshing to see politicians taking the job seriously instead of the regular auditions for the comedy store from the Trumpalikes that we've been treated to over the past few years. I'd almost forgotten what a serious politician is like.

pointythings · 10/10/2023 20:28

@Notonthestairs the government we have now has made me want to yell 'What the hell are you for?' so many times. It's refreshing to hear that Starmer actually gets it.

Yes he came across as a serious politician. But with the right amount of humility and humour that made him sound human!

Yep. I want problems solved, not exploited for political gain.

Congratulations to your son BTW 🥳

DuncinToffee · 10/10/2023 20:40

Serious politics and realism, I like it.

Honesty & integrity update…

The official pricing details of the Bibby Stockholm have been ‘published’ as promised. Obviously all the information has been redacted.

Zonder · 10/10/2023 21:41

How on earth do they get away with it?

Notonthestairs · 10/10/2023 21:42

Well if they aren't prepared to share the information you can only assume it is very very bad 💰💰💰💰

IClaudine · 10/10/2023 22:14

I was just listening to Iain Dale on LBC. He was desperately trying to put a negative spin on Starmer's speech. The Tories are toast and he really doesn't like it.

Labour has gained confidence. They know they can do it.

That is OUR money. How can they get away with this?

It took me a while to work out that it wasn't a spoof thread last night.

Thanks for the thread Duncin.

Covid inquiry continues.
This is worth a listen.

My worst day was losing eight patients in one shift. I cried for two days'

Heart-breaking testimony from NHS staff at the Covid Inquiry.

I’m not sure that anyone not in the front line realises how truly awful March 2020 and the period from Nov21-Jan 22 was. It’s almost a sign of how effective lockdowns were that most were more affected by lockdowns than covid.

I’m surprised we still have as many nhs staff as we do. To go through that and continually be gas lit by a government who won’t even attempt to restore your pay must be soul destroying.

Also, emerging from the @covidinquiryuk, is the amount of Boris Johnson baby-sitting that was going on.

"We will pre-brief PM for 5 mins before coming into the room... this is a must so he's not just winging it... would be great if you can prime boss to agree with me." ~AA

So essentially the SPAD I think it is is saying that the Ministers were incompetent and didn't have the first idea what was going on.

I wish I was surprised.

This is actually where Gove is different (as harmful as his education reforms where) he did actually bother with the detail.

I haven’t been on these threads before but thank you for them/this. It feels a sane escape. Thought Starmer handled the glittering well. I do wonder if they will up security.

RafaistheKingofClay · 11/10/2023 13:24

There was the story from ages back wasn’t there where they had to have loads of laptops with teams open because if Boris shut it down during a meeting he couldn’t get back in wasn’t there?
