I honestly think the Tories/Sunak think that Braverman and her nastiness is a vote winner for the worst of the voting public. Unfortunately, Braverman uses such words as homelessness being a lifestyle choice to grab the headlines, she knows exactly what she's doing. And there will be some of the party nodding along with her.

However, she is being heavily criticised even from her own party, like the senior Tory chairing an all party parliamentary group for ending homelessness, saying she needs to use wiser words.
Amnesty says... Of course, the government likes to peddle the idea of ‘intentional homelessness’ – it’s a convenient cop-out
And...
Weyman Bennett, co-convenor of Stand Up To Racism, said: “We’re here because there’s a racist running the Home Office. [Braverman] is a bigot.”
That sums it up for me.

This will backfire on her hopefully, especially as homelessness has increased by 74% since the Tories came to power.

When I went to sleep quite late last night, the vast majority of posters on the threads about Braverman's words were condeming her, this morning 8 hours later many of the posters in between seem to be supportive of her. Certainly a curiosity.

Cheguevarahamster · 05/11/2023 07:54

I wonder why the supporters of Suella only came out at night?
Here is some polling on attitudes towards homelessness. Surprise, surprise, Tory voters are least sympathetic.

itsgettingweird · 05/11/2023 08:42

My theory it's just setting up for another "Labour want ...." in this save it'll be new tones full of tents.

They (Braverman mainly) picks on something we know is an issue. Crime, people risking their lives on boats, people having to live in tents. But rather than look at why those problems are happening (or why and how they've created those issues) they blame the victims.

And when people recognise these victims for what they are they say "Labour wants you all to live in this crap country with ....."

It's literally all they have left. They don't have ideas. They've fucked us up badly. So because they can't pull themselves up they try and short the opposition down.

I was never sure of Starmer. I am surer now.

I was never affiliated to a particular party. However I'm beginning to think now I'll become a life long Labour member. I don't want to live in a country where those who need most are accused of being foreigners living on our streets through choice.

It's barbaric Angry

Piggywaspushed · 05/11/2023 09:01

I suspect, given how they steer the conversation to the US, that Braverman is playing to the NatCon gallery and that several of the night shift posters are American.

Sorry if it's been mentioned but Bob's surrendered the whip.

BBC News - Tory MP Bob Stewart surrenders whip after racial abuse conviction
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-67320533

He's surrendered it whilst he's reviewing his options for appeal. I imagine he was given a little bit of "encouragement" to do so. I assume he'll return at a later stage when the media has moved on to the next Tory scandal (soon then!)

Absolutely.
It's about securing attention and funding for her leadership challenge. Money from the US does come through - in very roundabout channels but it's there.

They don't have legislative time to add this policy - it will never happen. No charity will be prosecuted for handing out tents (although I'd love to see that in court).

It's absolute drivel. Again.

They only come out at night? I expect they have to spend the hours of daylight hanging upside down from the ceiling, Stock up on garlic.

DuncinToffee · 05/11/2023 09:39

I don't even know where to start this morning,

Dowden being questioned about the Mail front page

The Mail on Sunday allege the Tory Party covered up for a serial rapist MP... what's your response?

Oliver Dowden: "The Tory Party has zero tolerance for sexual misconduct.... but there's a limit to what I can say..."

That tent post has turned nasty. Bit of a swing from the usual trope of neglected former service men on the streets (which the uncle I ranked about actually was!).
No response to my question that if you were one of the people for whom schizophrenia drugs either don't work or have intolerable side effects would you choose suicide or addiction to cope?

Notonthestairs · 05/11/2023 09:48

Hhhhmmmm Braverman takes time out of her trip to Greece to suggest a random inflammatory policy about prosecuting charities for handing out tents to homeless people hours before Mail on Sunday runs a front page story about Conservative Party covering for rapist MP.

According to the Mail the Conservative Party paid for the victims treatment.

I'm going to have to hide the tents thread. It's a sensitive subject for me due to family experience, work experience and the charities I support based on the former 2. We've just suffered a close bereavement and it's not doing y blood pressure any good but I've gone for the jugular with my last post on there.

I know they won't. I had them ready for another thread but they weren't needed there. (the still voting tory thread)

Notonthestairs · 05/11/2023 10:27

Sorry to read that @countrygirl99.

The only thing I will say is that it's a zombie government flinging crap out and hoping something sticks. Those people that are defending the policy will vote Tory in any event - the substance, practicality and cost of a policy is irrelevant.

It's infuriating because it's a massive waste of our time. But I guess it fills newspapers.

Finally getting round to reading a newspaper. Must say I raised an eyebrow at how casually the Sunday Times reported that Johnson has collaborated with Dorries on her book.

"He co-operated extensively with Dorries’s book and is quoted at length, according to those familiar with the manuscript. A senior Tory said: “Boris egged her on. When the book was first floated a lot of people saw it as the chance to wound Rishi and perhaps replace him with Boris.”

I'm sure publication will ease tensions in the party tremendously!

IClaudine · 05/11/2023 11:59

That tent thread is putrid. I hope you are OK @countrygirl99

countrygirl99 · 05/11/2023 12:20

I've taken the dogs for a long walk and hidden the thread.
