Suella Braverman is seeking to restrict the use of tents by homeless people in urban areas as the government grapples with rising numbers of rough sleepers on Britain’s high streets, according to Whitehall insiders.

The UK home secretary’s proposals also include a new civil offence to deter charities from giving tents to homeless people. Charities could be fined for doing so under the plans if the tents cause a nuisance.

Braverman has pitched the policies for the government’s legislative programme that will be outlined in the King’s speech on Tuesday, people with knowledge of the proposals said.

There’s a small amount of hope when you read the start of that sentence that they are going to do something to help homeless people and then you remember that it’s Suella and that just making tents illegal would solve the problem in her mind.

The problem with letting the elderly die is that it isn’t the dying that is the issue. It’s the needing medical treatment first. Particularly in ICU. The discussion of potential DNRs around covid gets very heated. This would have been worse, we’d be talking about do not treat or at least do not admit to hospital on the basis of age or underlying condition alone.

AdamRyan · 03/11/2023 21:29

Oh I hate her so much.
Problem: homeless people making the UK look bad. Solution: they can die of exposure. Simples.
She is awful, awful, awful. I can't believe I'm thinking fondly of Patel as a result.

I just can't imagine King Charles reading that.

"My Government will ban homeless people living in tents in urban areas".

I know he has to read it though

BIossomtoes · 03/11/2023 22:52

I can’t either. They’re both unspeakable.

Passepartoute · 04/11/2023 01:14

It's so blatantly obvious that Braverman's thinking is that the more immigrants die of exposure, the better.

My blood pressure is currently being raised by Sunak, Braverman and Jenrick jumping on the bandwagon of claiming to be outraged at the prospect of the Palestinian march happening on Saturday (as it did the previous two Saturdays) because that happens to be Remembrance Day. The demonstrators don't intend to march at 11 a.m., it's not the day the Armistice Day services happen, and they have no history of desecrating the Cenotaph, yet that little band of three are taking it on themselves to claim it's disrespectful. Sorry, but freedom of speech is exactly what my grandfather was fighting to defend, what is deeply disrespectful is trying to use the memory of men like him to try to suppress it.

TooBigForMyBoots · 04/11/2023 02:37

Let them die seems to be Tory strategy these days.

I thought it was

"Let me choose who dies?"

RafaistheKingofClay · 04/11/2023 07:54

I think that’s Hancock’s personal policy.

In an addition to the let them die policy the U.K. government have bought enough covid vaccines to vaccinate 50-64 year olds but are not going to give them unless necessary because the NHS is under pressure. What is the point in having 8.5million vaccines sat on a shelf.

Apart from the fact that that policy will kill people, what exactly is their definition of the NHS being under pressure. Especially given that winter pressures are now year round and we haven’t even got to flu season yet. And surely the point where it’s under the sort of pressure I think they are aiming for is too late. Vaccinating people to reduce their chances of needing hospitalisation is supposed to be a prevention rather than a cure. And bear in mind they were warned about what is inevitably going to happen this winter back in June.

The government can't be expected to listen to the medical unions and other experts. What is needed is a Cabinet Minister for Older people so they are represented.

Jason118 · 04/11/2023 08:15

If the goal is to completely break the NHS then why would they want to use vaccines? If it's crash and burn time, the more they can break for Labour the better, with the upside of being able to suggest 'alternative healthcare schemes' i.e. ones they can make money from, when in opposition.

At some point surely people are going to notice how well the privatisation of water, gas, electricity and trains is going?

RafaistheKingofClay · 04/11/2023 08:42

That’s not privatisation though. It’s all the fault of the war in Ukraine or covid.

Or Labour.

Not the anti motorists

Or Jeremy Corbyn.

Or anyone really other than those who privatised them, have run the country for 13 years or are in power right now.

DuncinToffee · 04/11/2023 10:45

Never heard of it either but it seems to be used by far right Americans.

I am not sure the Internet is positive for the world at this point.

I walked past Winchester college this afternoon.

Did have a laugh with my friend as we imagined Sunak as a schoolboy inside 🤣🤣

Yet another Tory policy showing their inhumanity - Stop the Tents 😡

Braverman addressing the important issue of the day again.
Namely who is best positioned to replace Rishi.

L1ttledrummergirl · 04/11/2023 23:08

Braverman is devoid of humanity, empathy, understanding, intelligence or consideration. How the fuck she is in charge of anything more essential than a paper bag is beyond me.

Does anyone really believe that people choose to sleep rough due to lifestyle choice? No, the homelessness and decent into drug use usually comes as a lack of support in the community and health system (due to massive under funding as a result of shit government policy).

She needs to give her head a wobble.

This government get more outrageous by the day. How much damage are they going to do before we get rid of them? I sound like a broken record, we've needed an election for a few years, but this is truly beyond ridiculous.

Having had a read through of the threads on the topics, conspicous almost entirely by its absence is any support for Braverman.

Once again Rishi's Tory party seems to have forgotten that its core Shire voter likes to think they are compassionate and care for people less fortunate than themselves.

Piggywaspushed · 05/11/2023 07:11

It's the overt race baiting in her statement too . She says 'many of them foreign' when referring to the people in tents. Fancy wanting to play to the NF crowd?

Presumably she thinks she knows what the core voter in the electorate she is appealing to is like?
