Sky's Sam Coates certainly seemed baffled by the whole thing

Rishi Sunak X Elon Musk

One of the maddest events I’ve ever covered

Sunak is so wet isn't he...for a very rich man he doesn't seem to have a clue. From what Sam Coates said it was just all a bit of an old boys rich people chinwag

newnamethanks · 03/11/2023 09:38

He's a very wealthy man. He doesn't need to have a clue, his shining path unfolds before him, paved with readily available funds. Give up your job for a few months while you try out a new business. Why not? What could possibly go wrong? And if it does, so what? You'll have lost a few thousand. 'Chickenfeed' as Bozo referred to his 250k second salary. They are not like us and they don't have our best interests at heart. Electors, please note.

Notonthestairs · 03/11/2023 09:42

Given the amplification of disinformation circulating on Twitter post Musk's purchase I'm amazed Sunak thought it was a good idea to interview him.

But then I suppose being cowed by a R/W media owner fits the current Conservative agenda nicely.

I presume that Sunak did his chat with Musk so that for once Sunak wasn't the person in the room with the least clue about the lives of most people.

I once had a conversation with an farmer who acquaintance who reckoned people were only unemployed because they were too lazy to start their own business. DH was in the process of setting up a business from scratch after redundancy. I went through all the costs and the time period he would be have zero income and pointed out he could only do it because I was a high earner and could support the whole household. I also pointed out that this was a business with a very low capital requirement and if it had needed a lot he would not have had the option without taking on a big loan as well. Of course she had inherited a fully functioning business complete with accommodation and hadn't in her entire life (she's was in her 70s) set up any diversification so had zero idea what setting up a business involved.

Oh, was it real? I assumed it was an example of AI.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 03/11/2023 12:24

Just watched last night's Newsnight. I didn't think anything coming out of the covid enquiry would shock me. But my god, Hancock arguing with the head of the NHS because he wanted to be the one who decided who lived or died, not the medics has shocked me to the core. The direct power of life or death in the hands of politicians, any politicians, is absolutely horrifying.

If Sunak and Musk are examples of AI, then I must say I'm not all that impressed.

newnamethanks · 03/11/2023 14:54

If only they were, jgw1, we might be able to de-programme them or, hopefully, see them fall into obsolescence.

Shame it isn't a byelection-triggering conviction.

Cheguevarahamster · 03/11/2023 17:12

How on earth he has he not lost the whip? It's beyond me.

Lose the whip, he'll be cheered in some parts of the Conservative party.

Unrelated have we got some anti-clav on the other thread consistently refusing to post links?

Yup. Refuses to provide any evidence for any of her assertions, just tells other posters to Google it. And very pissed off at being picked up on it.

RafaistheKingofClay · 03/11/2023 17:50

They have to be careful about who they withdraw the whip from. They only started with a majority of 80. You can’t set the bar too low.

AdamRyan · 03/11/2023 17:53

That poster is awful. I've had a few run ins with them.

Boris Johnson will tell Covid inquiry it was his 'duty' to consider whether lockdown did more harm than good

'I have reflected about whether lockdowns would do more harm than good... I believe it was the duty of any pragamatic & responsible leader to have such a debate'

The inquiry has heard that Johnson suggested older people should 'accept their fate' rather than impose another lockdown

OP posts:
Notonthestairs · 03/11/2023 19:49

I don't think laughing at the situation in Italy falls within "debating". It was a privileged schoolboys response to a horrifying situation.

AtmosAtmos · 03/11/2023 20:14

Horribly I’m I actually had a similar conversation after Covid lockdown with someone about 75 who had the attitude that the older generation should be prepared to sacrifice themselves. She believed her granddaughter needed normality and she had had her life.

I was shocked but also remember not arguing whether it was right or wrong (not going to change her mind)but simply it wouldn’t work. Thousands of older and vulnerable people couldn’t just die with no impact on society or the economy. The medical staff, undertakers etc would also be sacrificed.

Which thread is this?

Currently it's on the Dominic Cummings Covid evidence thread in News
