If anyone is interested in the Rwanda court case, here is a good thread on twitter

The third and final day of the Supreme Court hearing over the UK's Rwanda migration deal has begun - follow live updates here

Sir James Eadie, representing the Home Office, is responding to submissions from lawyers representing asylum seekers and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR)

BREAKING: Plymouth Hospitals Trust has declared a critical incident today. It saw 389 patients in A&E at Derriford yesterday and had 22 ambulances waiting outside at 9am this morning. In recent weeks there have been times when there were 30 ambulances waiting:

I know it's a familiar story up and down the country. It shouldn't be.

I know it's a familiar story up and down the country. It shouldn't be.

It reminds me of when COVID first hit and there were horrifying stories about Russia being unable to cope with ambulances lining the streets outside the hospitals. I remember thinking thank God I don't live in such an underdeveloped country and feeling grateful for our NHS, and yet here we are.

Flu season hasn't fully begun yet, I can't even begin to imagine how difficult things will become for hospital staff.

Notonthestairs · 11/10/2023 15:27

I've been reading Shaun Lintern's twitter feed for a while now and there doesn't seem to be a quieter period - it's just levels of crisis.
Astonishing how staff manage to cope day in day out.

From halfway down that thread -

Is the system in Rwanda so broken that it cannot be fixed?" Sir James asks, and argues it's not, and that with terms of deal and UK funding and monitoring it can "comply with commitments"

So we aren’t going to spend taxpayer’s money on fixing our own asylum system we’re going to fix Rwanda’s.

Big exclusive from @legalhackette Jonathan Ames & @matt_dathan

Rapists and burglars will be spared jail from next week after judges told prisons are full

Crown court judges ordered to delay sentencing hearings as prison population hits bursting point

Lord Edis, senior presiding judge for England and Wales, has ordered that sentencing of convicted criminals who are currently on bail should be delayed from Monday

Crown court judges have also been issued with guidance that some prisoners will be released early

Senior crown court judge says they have been 'ordered/strongly encouraged' not to send defendants appearing before them on bail to prison

'We have been told this is a short-term measure, but nobody knows what that means'

Crown court judge says 'biggest concern' is defendants charged with historic rape/ rape of child under 13 likely to remain on bail

'What am I going to do if a jury finds someone guilty? Do I release that person back into community, where the victim might see them?'

I thought we were going to start sending prisoners abroad.

dontcallmelen · 11/10/2023 17:39

It’s just goes on & on every bloody day, failing us in every which way that’s possible, just so bloody depressing.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 11/10/2023 17:59

Checking in.

Got a response to my IPSO complaint about the Daily Mail making out the pro Hamas event was part of the Labour Party Conference. As I'm not a respresentative of the Labour Party or the nutjob event the complaint is closed as they don't investigate complaints from 3rd parties. FFS. So the public have no way of holding the media to account.

RafaistheKingofClay · 11/10/2023 18:23

You what? We really need to get Leveson 2 sorted out.

Rapists seem like exactly the sort of people you wouldn’t want to send to prison. FFS.

As long as the Prime Minister says he knows what a woman is, everyone will be safe.

RafaistheKingofClay · 11/10/2023 19:20

And the shoplifters get jailed. I mean you wouldn’t want to go without getting tough sentences for them.

I heard there was an empty barge off Portland, couldn't they use that as a prison?

Maybe Tory voters have a spare room Wink

Do we get to choose which criminal we put up?

I don't think my patience would cope well with Boris or Rishi.

Can you link?

Zonder · 12/10/2023 17:07

Starmer's hair? FFS! I'm guessing plenty of people have already mentioned Johnson and Fabricant ad nauseum over there.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 12/10/2023 17:09

Makes a change from Keir's beer I suppose.

He's an awful man doncha know. He doesn't use a balloon to rub over his hair every time he appears on the telly. Absolutely awful.

But don't worry, Sunak announced that they now have reached their goal of 10,000 virtual ward beds

Hospital staff performing surgery

NHS waiting list in England rises to record 7.75m

Data shows August was a very busy month for hospitals and ambulance services.
