Still, perhaps they'll be happy when they have to pay monthly extras for features on their EVs. Indicators anyone? The car won't drive unless you pay £10 a month for the privilege.

Music streaming sub Vs car indicators? 🤔

A heated seat is a necessity for me. I get my cars second hand and then that feature has essentially already been paid for. To buy a second hand car and then have to pay extra on top for the heated seat subject would be ludicrous, but a great way of continuing to make money through the cats lifespan for the manufacturer.

I don't want to drag a laptop around with me. I want music on my phone, not using my data, can plug into my car stereo or wear headphones outside.

Can't be done. Gone. No more availability.

Can I not play music from YouTube (Free)
Copy it to my computer and save it in a file there forever?
The next step is to copy that file to my phone or my old iPod. [if I can find it and the lead to charge it]
I used to do this is it impossible now?

CallieRedux · 03/10/2023 17:30

Y'all, really? 😆

Good to know there's just as much crazy in the UK.
I guess.

I’m about to buy a DVD player, so that I can start to keep films and documentaries I like or value in their original, or at least 2023 content. I used to have a dvd recorder, but the discs deteriorated quite quickly compared to commercially produced ones.

I have a vast number of printed books, and I intend to hang on to them, dog ears and all. I don’t want the latest revised edition, revised to reflect the prejudice du jour.

’Facts ‘ sourced on the internet, promulgated by the mainstream media and the educational/ scientific / political establishment are just too susceptible to revision . Trigger warning : Covid vaccine example incoming.

We are told now , and it is repeated as a mantra ( religious comparison intended) that these vaccines were’ never intended to prevent people contracting the virus’ , only to ‘lessen the severity of the sickness if contracted’ . But that is what they were originally promoted to do. I know this, because I have the original paper letter on NHS headed paper from my GP surgery, inviting me for my vaccine and telling me that it would behave as the flu vaccine does : that is, it stops you getting the current strain of influenza.

I have even read and heard people saying that vaccines have ‘always’ just lessened the severity of the disease, rather than preventing it. But I can name you several old Tv programmes which confidently tell people to vaccinate their children against smallpox, diphtheria etc because the children would be immune.

This is why I want to own hard copies of information , (and even entertainment) not rent whatever the current factoid is. Because changing or withholding facts is the best way to undermine civil society .

Ginmonkeyagain · 03/10/2023 17:41

I know right?

No one blindly trusts corporations and governments to have our best interests at heart- it is more the swivel eyed insistence that it is some sort of conspiracy which is a bit tiresome.

I manage to function perfectly well in society with hardly any subscriptions. I have Netflix - a lockdown hangover I am thinking of getting rid of. That is pretty much it.

It's not impossible, in fact its really easy to do.

This is what they do, create a problem that doesnt exist so that they can blame (and get you to blame) the shadowy evil forces of the WEF, or the lizard people, or the CIA, whoever their current conspiracy theory favours. They tell you that you can't own music because They have made it that way. But you can own music.

RosaGallica · 03/10/2023 17:56

I am not in favour of the rentier society described, and I am very much against control of information by private interests, but can I introduce you to a whole genre called science fiction and fantasy? Many many people have given us their visions of the future and many many of them have been wrong.

There are many things to worry about, but that list doesn’t seem to include the demographic changes coming in the Northern Hemisphere so I will file it with those visions.

It eon't make sense, once money is only digital, you won't get to choose, and they control your every move and spend, lap it up... and learn when it's to late, canadian truckers know sll snout being cancelled!

Who’s “they”?

I do hope this isn’t about to veer into an antisemitic theory.

parameciumparty · 03/10/2023 16:00

Look at the govt having tantrums over the 'economically inactive'. They need to keep people stuck in work. Renting a house and car means you're stuck having to earn more money to pay for these essential things.

Imagine that, wanting people to contribute in some way in exchange for food, heat and shelter.

What? Of course it’s not gone, all my Spotify music is downloaded onto my phone.

Why would you pretend that that’s not possible?

spuddel · 03/10/2023 18:25

I just bought a dvd player last month as a few of the films I love from the 80s/90s are not on Amazon, the only sub I pay for. Already have the films so it's wasteful not to watch and enjoy them in that format. Music is an issue as I used to love jumping in the car and the CD that was in just played. Now it's all a faff getting the phone up and running before moving off. Same with books, I want to own them and treasure them and smell them and share them.

Anyone can Google 'Andrew Bailey Diary' and it appears on the BoE website. He attended a virtual WEF meeting on 10th June 2020 about The Great Reset.
I used to laugh off a lot of it off but we seem to be more controlled than ever by the Government and beyond and none of us seem to be living better lives because of it. There is so much greed and control by those in charge. Some elected, some not. We should all take note and pay attention to the facts.

The then Prince Charles launched the WEF Great Reset idea at Davos in June 2020, why wouldn't Governor of the Bank of England attend a virtual WEF meeting a week later? Despite what the grifters have led you to believe, it's really just an ineffectual talking shop.

So why not pay to download individual tracks and albums? Or rip CDs? Or buy a Walkman and jeans with oversized pockets to fit it like it's 1999? No one is stopping you you know.

HongKongGarden · 03/10/2023 15:27

Who are you suggesting wants the state to own and control all resources?

I don’t think that anyone on here is saying that.

Twas Moon saying she thought that's what would happen and that she thought it was a good thing but is now rethinking.

Celibacy it's okay, I understand your point too.

I'm on the borderline of someone who may or not be okay. it depends on a lot of things.

Hong is obviously okay as she said clearly in her first post that a return to feudalism would be good for her. I don't want that even if I do end up on the rich side.

swimsong · 03/10/2023 18:39

parameciumparty · 03/10/2023 14:47

And a constant feeling of insecurity and not knowing what's round the corner. People can't be expected to live like that. If they think mental illness rates are bad now, imagine how much worse they'll be when everyone finds themselves essentially trapped and indentured and constantly milked for money.

Human beings need a certain amount of autonomy and the ability to save money and own certain things. Have some basic choices. Anything else doesn't represent a civilised society. We'll just be serfs. People already can't afford to buy modest homes and start families. Renting is a minefield due to having few rights. EVs are unaffordable for ordinary people. Childcare is virtually unaffordable now and costs the same as a mortgage/rent.

If people think this is all a conspiracy theory, they've got a shock coming. It's already started.

What you're describing doesn't need any conspiracy - it's an obvious consequence of the last 13 years of callous and disastrous austerity economics, which many on this thread probably voted for. It will get worse as British politics moves further and further to the right. People getting taken in by cynical grifters making scary videos about the ineffectual WEF and the at worst harmless Great Reset suits them fine - all it does is motivate people to watch more videos and make the creators more dosh.

FromEden · 03/10/2023 18:39

Im really fed up that every time someone dates question the government or dares to question the direction the world is moving in, they are labelled a conspiracy theorist lunatic.

Especially when it's something like the great reset, which isn't a conspiracy theory. The info is all out there, freely available on the wef website and in the UN documents. They're just making themselves look like braindead idiots spouting that nonsense, but I'm guessing it's their default reaction to any challenge of authority.

EmmaEmerald · 03/10/2023 18:40

Although HongKongGarden i appreciate the honesty.

we don't get a lot of that on MN except when someone like me says "well, why didn't you realise you can't afford your three kids" etc but mostly we sit on our hands and leave the thread.

well, if it means I don’t do 5 1/2 months of 60 hour weeks every year just to pay my income tax to give to other people I’d probably accept some downsides in exchange, especially if it’s those other people that they are happening to.

it's not. A lot of these irritations end up happening! And there are still people who think electric cars are good for the planet. These people already have created problems.

The issue of books and music and film disappearing or being edited (like the Roald Dahl books nearly were) had already been discussed, but the subscription model for the temporary owning of goods is so much more expensive usually than just going out and buying something. Not to mention the stress of it. We've never gone down the route of leasing a car because then there's extra mental and physical labour involved in looking after it for someone else as you have to hand it back.

Edited

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was edited by Dahl himself in the 70s to remove the most offensive part of the descriptions of the Oompa-Loompas. Enid Blyton was edited to remove the racism. Agatha Christie? Well, have a look at what And Then There Were None was renamed from in 1940 because it was felt to be offensive (and a second alternative title used in the 1960s was also felt to be offensive and removed). Gulliver's Travels was edited/abridged to remove parts that were felt to be inappropriate. Sleeping Beauty was originally a victim of rape whilst in a coma and married her rapist after childbirth woke her up.

The choice to buy music digitally has gone. I would need to rent (stream it).

No it hasn't - you can by MP3s (or FLACs or AACs) to store inviolably on your hard drive from iTunes Store, Amazon Music, Bandcamp, 7digital - and direct from many record label websites.

If for some reason I can't guess, you can't buy and download individual songs to your phone - just download onto your laptop, connect it to your phone and transfer. It's not impossible and certainly not difficult.

No, they think they are less damaging in terms of climate change, and in general are right to do so.

For most use cases electric cars are already less polluting than conventional-engines cars.

As battery technology improves and we generate more of our electricity from renewable resources it’ll get to be the case in nearly every use-scenario.

I went down a deep, deep rabbit hole with WEF, Maui, Gates' vaccines, five minute cities....clinging on to what people like @HongKongGarden say here because, if even half these 'theories' are true, we are all done for.
