As for the 'AI takeover', technology has developed so fast in the last ten years that we are not even aware of it. We only hear a fraction of how tech has developed.AI and automation in ten years will make so many workers obsolete...that includes you.

If for some reason I can't guess, you can't buy and download individual songs to your phone - just download onto your laptop, connect it to your phone and transfer. It's not impossible and certainly not difficult.

I don't own a laptop. All I have is an android phone and an iPad from 2011 which doesn't even work.

I don't have a hard drive and I don't understand the rest of your post because tech and I'm getting on and I'm not particularly techy. I could manage to download tracks from Google play thingy and now I can't and everything is streamed.

Yes the Google play music store doesn't exist anymore but there are other places yoy can buy downloads, it's not a conspiracy.🤨 And whatever you're using to access mumsnet will have a drive of some sort.

Then they will rely on benefits. The point remains, we already have ongoing costs for all sorts of perishable and transient things now; this implication that we don’t already need an income or savings in later life is just not true.

So benefits will pay for housing for all those who have retired and can no longer afford their monthly payments on their pensions. At the moment those who own their own properties do not have this cost once the mortgage is paid off. Keep on working till you drop if you want to have a half decent standard of living is likely to be the outcome of this kind of policy.

I think you have misunderstood my point. I am not saying that people do not need an income in later life. Of course they do. What I am saying is that people who do not have savings and private pensions are in for a pretty miserable life. And yes this is already the case for many people but it will be the case for many many more if you are never able to own anything.

I never said it was a conspiracy 🤦🏻‍♀️ Streaming is a way of making more money for companies.

Yes but you don't have to use it. Despite what you keep saying, other means of buying music are not "gone".

The fact that you find it confusing has nothing to do with the claim that it’s not allowed or can’t be done. I still have everything I ripped from CDs, all my Spotify music downloaded, and all my apple music purchases.

But no-one’s trying to stop us owning anything.

No-one is coming to take your house, or your shoes, your car or your clothes.

Yes, but I'm talking about buying new music. Music that I don't have on CD, apple and Google play. New tracks that I might just fancy owning.

Young people can't afford their own homes now. They're stuck living at home or in rented accomodation, often shared.

EVs are very expensive and are unaffordable for most people.

Thank you, I’m aware streaming is not compulsory and I don’t stream TV. I’m merely commenting on a concern. What’s with the hostility?

I never said they were.

I was under the impression that this thread was discussing a hypothetical situation which might arise if the phrase "you will own nothing" actually came to pass.

Nowhere have I said that this is actually happening.

You can still do that. If iTunes is your thing it’s all still available there, or you can convert vinyl, tape, CDs, cassettes etc to MP3 if you prefer.

Then don’t buy an EV, no-one’s forcing you to.

Plenty of young people can afford their homes. What people tend to mean when you dig into this is that young people without any decent qualifications can’t easily buy a nice house in or near London. That’s simply not a problem; the problem is more the expectation that someone with a 2:2 in art history from Bournemouth who works in Tesco should be able to buy a nice flat in Wapoing.

No. Wages haven't kept up with house prices and people aren't able to afford to buy. This isn't about poor people wanting to live in nice areas.

@Celibacyinthesticks, I just had to congratulate you on your patience in responding to some of the most spectacularly stupid comments I've ever seen on here and continuing to explain the subscription/ extortion model in automobile features.

I wanted to congratulate you on your patience too, @Celibacyinthesticks, in dealing with the irrelevant responses. I found your 'heated seats' subscription post really interesting.

Coveescapee · 03/10/2023 21:52

Of course you can be forced to buy an EV @HongKongGarden . Petrol cars are no longer being manufactured after a certain date and I believe that it will be impossible to purchase petrol (no petrol stations). As there is not the infrastructure or electricity capacity for anyone but a small percentage to own EVs car usage will be limited to the wealthy. That is the plan. Unfortunately public transport is rubbish outside cites too so people's freedom will be severely limited.

I've googled and there are some ways of doing it which weren't available when Google play discontinued buying individual albums/tracks back in 2020, so I shall investigate and see if I can do something. Thank you. I might get my son to help as well.

Re comments on Child Labour and cell phones.
The key element is Tantalum. I doubt there are any ethical supplies of Tantalum. There are few sources of this metal in the world. One is in DRC, [it certainly is not Democratic and scarcely a Republic but it is the Congo].
Another deposit is in Southern Greenland, I think Mozzfeldt. The stuff from the DRC is quite cheap, most of the buyers are agents working for Japanese or Israeli companies.
I knew a man who worked for an Israeli company. He was a Congolese national, related to one of the old tribal chiefs.

Who would buy a phone that cost extra if two are on the counter in front of them?

The UK government has just pushed back the ban on the sale of new petrol cars to 2035. You’re just making things up when you claim that petrol stations will be banned or that we’ll not have the infrastructure for electric cars.

Does your house not have electric sockets?

The average smartphone uses about 50mg if Tantalum. 0.05g. 0.0005kg.

Tantalum is less than £150/kg, which means the tantalum in a phone costs around 8p.

Australia has proven reserves of around 100,000 metric tonnes of Tantalum. That’s enough for 2e11 phones.

I don’t think Tantalum’s going to be the limiting factor, but suppose that it could be.

Hopefully the next generation of batteries shift us away from the need to rely so heavily on materials so concentrated in areas with such poor labour laws.
