Have you had your heating on yet?

My thermostat says my house is 18.5 degrees this morning and it feels really cold already! I've actually never had a thermostat before until now, in my old house I just used to put the heating on as and when but I'm thinking I should set it at a temperature so that it kicks in.

Anybody else had their heating on yet, and what temperature is your thermostat set at?

Nope. Ours is off and has been since about March.

It's 9 degrees outside (according to my car) but feels much warmer, the sun is out and there's no breeze.

A few times in south east Scotland.

If I have a T-shirt on and I get cold I will put a hoodie on but if I'm still cold it goes on.

I'm don't want to wear 35 million layers in my own home when I am lucky enough to afford to put the heating on.

flexigirl · 23/09/2023 09:04

I've had the wood burner AND the heating on I'm freezing, I think I might be struggling so much as I've lost 5 stone since last year and now realise it was like seal blubber, keeping me nice and cosy 😂

Yeah, a few times. It's been chucking it down here and while it isn't particularly cold-cold, everything felt damp and ick. According to hive it's been on three times this month for less than 2 hours in total and cost £1.40.

megletthesecond · 23/09/2023 09:05

For half an hour on the rainy day this week. I'm in Hampshire.

redmalt · 23/09/2023 09:05

I feel like 18.5 degrees isn't particularly cold but my house feels it, especially in the mornings 🥶 I'm in North West and temperature has definitely dropped here

avocadotofu · 23/09/2023 09:07

Nope.

FrenchandSaunders · 23/09/2023 09:07

Nope. It needs to be very cold for me to put the heating on. I can afford it, just don’t like it.

Titsywoo · 23/09/2023 09:07

Nope but it hasn't been cold enough yet to go outside with a coat on. I'm in the south east so maybe warmer here.

Sarah2891 · 23/09/2023 09:07

Our boiler comes on when it goes below 20, so yes it's been on for a short while.

skippy67 · 23/09/2023 09:08

No. Ours has been off since March. We're in London.

mondaytosunday · 23/09/2023 09:09

My thermostat is set to 18 so the heat won't come on til it is below that anyway. But no - in fact the back door is wide open and I'm lying under my open bedroom window - it is currently 11 degrees out but the sun is streaming in.
I have had my gas fire on in the evening a few times in the last week though. It warms up our relatively small livingroom.

redmalt · 23/09/2023 09:09

Doesn't it cost more though if it's on a lot because it's set to come on below a certain temperature?

lucysmam · 23/09/2023 09:10

Mine put itself on yesterday, late morning, so I'm guessing it dropped below 18.5 in the house. I turned it back off though - I wasn't cold, and was on my way out anyway.

HundredMilesAnHour · 23/09/2023 09:10

I'm on the South Coast at present in quite an old cottage and was definitely cold when I got out of bed this morning. It's 13 degrees outside right now. No heating on though.

I'm back to London tomorrow and it's always a few degrees warmer there (hurray!) so don't expect to start using the heating until Oct or Nov.

hby9628 · 23/09/2023 09:11

@redmalt I'm in the northwest too. We had it on last night for a couple of hours. You're right. It's a warm temp but the rain is just making everything feel cold. It's depressing.
It's meant to be sunny today though so fingers crossed.

Kashmirisky · 23/09/2023 09:11

A couple of times this week, an hour in total. It’s been 7-8 degrees at night. Mostly for the kitchen which is huge with a marble floor and lots of glass.

BettyBallerina · 23/09/2023 09:11

Yes, I put mine on last night for the first time and have just set up my schedule so it’ll be coming on automatically now. North facing house (lovely and cool in summer, cold in winter!) in Hampshire.

MajesticWhine · 23/09/2023 09:12

Mine is off. I'll be tempted to give it a blast soon. It's getting a bit cold in the mornings.

Boyonthenres · 23/09/2023 09:14

Yes mine is on, I am very light of weight and feel the cold massively

Stroopwaffels · 23/09/2023 09:16

Yes. We are in Scotland and it is cold in the mornings, down to 7c or something. So it's on for an hour in the morning, and a couple of hours in the evening.

I set my heating by the temperature not the calendar.

margotrose · 23/09/2023 09:16

We're north west too - it's gorgeous outside today. Clear blue skies and sunshine.

I work outdoors and I was cold at work yesterday but the house feels fine.

AncientSpinningWheel · 23/09/2023 09:19

No, but the dressing gown of doom has been deployed.

Tumbleweed101 · 23/09/2023 09:20

No, but tempting now and again this week in early morning/evening.

My bedroom is 15C at the moment and I’m contemplating getting up and shivering for first time this side of last winter.

DisforDarkChocolate · 23/09/2023 09:21

Twice to dry clothes, I was very annoyed at my lack of planning.
