Have you had your heating on yet?

My thermostat says my house is 18.5 degrees this morning and it feels really cold already! I've actually never had a thermostat before until now, in my old house I just used to put the heating on as and when but I'm thinking I should set it at a temperature so that it kicks in.

Anybody else had their heating on yet, and what temperature is your thermostat set at?

I’m in an Airbnb 5 hours drive north of where I live.

I really wish the central heating was on! There’s a plug in electric heater but it’s noisy and not very effective

HelpMeGetThrough · 23/09/2023 10:03

It's getting close to adjusting the thermostat for it to kick in. It's showing 18.5 in the lounge at the moment and it was 11 outside, when I went out at 8am. Hard to believe a couple of weeks ago it was 27 in the lounge!

Had to put jogging bottoms and jumper on this morning, when I came down to make coffee, but that was at 3am!!

Rainbowshit · 23/09/2023 10:05

I boosted the heating for an hour on Thursday last week. We were all freezing and the jeans weren't drying.

Haven't put it on on though yet.

Ours clicked on for the first time this morning. I doubt it'll be on long though, the temperature is set to rise this week I think.

ShinyBandana · 23/09/2023 10:07

I put ours on for a few hours yesterday. Mainly to dry/air clothes as I usually hang them up in our laundry lean-to but it’s that damp time of year when this stops being effective.
So I just had the hall radiator on and ran round the rest of the house turning any others off.

Oblomov23 · 23/09/2023 10:10

No. Ours is set to 19 and will come on automatically if it needs to though.

MrsJBaptiste · 23/09/2023 10:10

I'd give up a lot before my heating but we haven't needed to have it on yet. I know that when it goes on, we get used to it and that will be it until May (if last year was anything to go by...)

Tonight1 · 23/09/2023 10:13

No, I've noticed the drop in temp but just put on a cardi at present

SophiaElise · 23/09/2023 10:13

It switches on automatically (on a timer) whenever the temperature drops below 20 degrees, so yes. Most of the radiators are turned off though, so it really only comes on in a couple of rooms.

I find that too.

Ours was on until very late April this year, it seemed to stay cold & damp for ages. I don't think I left the back door open until May half term.

Motnight · 23/09/2023 10:14

It's definitely chilly here - London and 17.3 in the house. But have windows and doors open. Will probably swap to my winter duvet tonight but point of principle not to put the heating on until October.

Looking at my past energy bills think that I last had the heating on briefly in June.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 23/09/2023 10:14

7 degrees last night. Heating has been off since about March. We have our heated blankets ready and hot water bottles. We have logs bought for the fire but we’re holding out. Sat on sofa with a blanket over me and dd2 with cat sat with us. I think over next few weeks we’ll be using the fire maybe at night if it gets too cold.

sanityisamyth · 23/09/2023 10:15

No and it's never going on. I bought Oodies instead to keep warm.

Fizbosshoes · 23/09/2023 10:16

No, not yet.
We always have the calendar v temperature argument in the house!
I go by temperature. Once I think it was about 9° but DH was insisting we didn't need the heating on because it was August

sleepyscientist · 23/09/2023 10:18

No not yet tho we have lit the log burner that had us way to hot in about 5 minutes

Metatarse · 23/09/2023 10:19

Was 16 last night, so I put it on to 19. Last year I waited too long and the house ended up getting quite damp. I know it will cost, but I'm not working my arse off at work to sit and shiver in a damp house.

IClaudine · 23/09/2023 10:21

Not yet. I an still in shock at last winter's bill🤯

Metatarse · 23/09/2023 10:21

And I have reynauds, so once I get cold, that's pretty much it for my fingers and nipples.

Floralnomad · 23/09/2023 10:21

No , we are in the SE and still have fans going most days and every night . I’m still in shorts and a T shirt .

PlumpAndGrump · 23/09/2023 10:21

No central heating on yet but oil filled electric radiator on once or twice to dry things.

It's cold in the mornings but an extra layer on and blankets on the sofas are helping.

Chipsahoy · 23/09/2023 10:21

Yes. It was on for half an hour every morning through most of summer too. I live in an old house we are slowly renovating. It’s chilly plus in north Scotland!

Had the heat on for an additional hour this morning already as it was 5c here.

Londontown12 · 23/09/2023 10:29

Sunny outside here indoor temp 19.5 not cold at all but we did have an open fire 🔥 just once this week when we felt nippy x

Costalife · 23/09/2023 10:33

Absolutely not. Lounge was 16.2 when I woke this morning but that didn't feel that cold to me..I am unusual though and don't really feel the cold.

margotmargeaux · 23/09/2023 10:34

No, in Cornwall the sun is shining.

Got the bifolds wide open.

Always try to get through September before considering putting any heating on.

SquigglePigs · 23/09/2023 10:34

Yes, ours has been on for the last couple of days. It's on a thermostat so if it gets below 18 in the house in the day then the heating comes on.
