Have you had your heating on yet?

My thermostat says my house is 18.5 degrees this morning and it feels really cold already! I've actually never had a thermostat before until now, in my old house I just used to put the heating on as and when but I'm thinking I should set it at a temperature so that it kicks in.

Anybody else had their heating on yet, and what temperature is your thermostat set at?

Just come back from Turkey (33c day/25c nights) and we have the winter duvet on the bed, the coal fire was lit in the front room and we are both wearing big jumpers

No heating yet but the temp went down to 17 in the house - only 0.5 degrees above what the thermostat is set at...

BathingBeauty · 23/09/2023 09:22

Briefly as I needed to dry some uniform. Got far too hot.
It’s too cold without and too hot with it on just now.

BoobyDazzler · 23/09/2023 09:23

No, but we have talked about sorting out the log store and have had the log burner swept out. My house rarely gets an over 18.5° even with the heating on though, it’s currently 17° in here and all the windows are open.

Our thermostat is set to 18°- it came on last night for the first time in quite a while.

dementedpixie · 23/09/2023 09:24

My thermostat is set around 16⁰C just now and hasn't kicked in yet that I know. Also have it on a timer so if it comes on it would only be am and pm rather than all day and night.

Clothes are definitely taking longer to dry so might have to think about turning up the thermostat soon (although the highest I usually set it at is 18/19⁰C)

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 23/09/2023 09:24

No heating yet but last night the summer duvet wasn't quite warm enough so laid the (not switched on) heated throw over the top (the only blanket to hand at 1am this morning when I couldn't sleep).

MammaTo · 23/09/2023 09:28

Yep.

First thing of a morning and in the middle of the night about 1am-2am to take the chill off the babies room because it can get really cold.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 23/09/2023 09:29

Not yet.

I'm in the midlands so while it hasn't been quite as warm as further south the outside temps haven't been as low as further north. It's also been sunny at points each day which helps, as the front is south facing so lots of solar gain. The house has been dropping to around 17°c overnight but warming up quickly during the day.

I probably will be putting the electric radiator on in the bathroom in the next couple of weeks though, it gets no sun now so gets colder more quickly.

It really does depend on how much sun there is with this house though, if it can stay similar to this for next few weeks it would be helpful in delaying us putting it on. I'd like to make it to October half term (from 28/10) but that might be wishful thinking.

Passivhaus · 23/09/2023 09:30

Not yet hoping to hold off until at least November. Happy to put a throw round me atm

Doesn't it cost more though if it's on a lot because it's set to come on below a certain temperature?

Having your heating on a lot will cost more- but if you can afford it, having it click on when the house reaches a certain temp is handy.

We've had ours on the last 5 nights, and for a bit in the day

flexigirl · 23/09/2023 09:04

I've had the wood burner AND the heating on I'm freezing, I think I might be struggling so much as I've lost 5 stone since last year and now realise it was like seal blubber, keeping me nice and cosy 😂

Wow, well done on the weight loss.

piscofrisco · 23/09/2023 09:36

W head it on last night for a few hours (it turned itself off for some reason which is a bit worrying). It was chilly in the house last night and is this morning. We're SE and it's not that cold out yet (10 degrees now and sunny) but our house is always freezing for some reason.

Chewbecca · 23/09/2023 09:37

I never switch it off and let the thermostat do its thing. It came on this morning for the first time. SE and the sun is shining now so it wasn't really necessary but I am pleased for the towels !😃

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 23/09/2023 09:38

Nope, still sitting in a teeshirt and shorts with the windows wide open. Usually November before I think about the heating because I don't generally feel the cold until it's single-digit temps outside.

43ontherocksporfavor · 23/09/2023 09:39

No! Had window open and fan on last night but I am 52….

drinkuptheezider · 23/09/2023 09:40

We are on a thermostat set at 18. It has kicked in a couple of times. DH ( immobile/ poor health) has complained of being cold and used a blanket over his legs.

caringcarer · 23/09/2023 09:41

I've not had the heating on yet but last night I felt a bit cool in bed so I'm digging out the winter duvet for tonight. In the sitting room in the evenings I have started using my big fleece throw over me. I'm hoping to hold off on gch until second or third week in October. Were away all over October half term and until Nov 9th so it won't be on then.

WhatACluster · 23/09/2023 09:41

No, we have night storage heaters and electric oil radiator things which are expensive to run.

We do have a log burner and so have had a fire on a couple of times this week, it’s due to be swept next week.

It a lot colder in the mornings at the moment so we have put jumpers on.

It doesn't cost a penny till the gas ignites

Guiltyfeethavegotnorhythm0 · 23/09/2023 09:51

Not yet although I have noticed feeling cold when I get out the shower now , so may start putting it on for an hour in the morning .

Sartre · 23/09/2023 09:54

It’s come on automatically a handful of times including this morning. I put it on deliberately once last week when it was hammering it down and I needed to dry wellies and puddlesuits before we ventured out again.

Bubbles254 · 23/09/2023 09:56

Ours is still off. Said it was 17 degrees this morning. I did some exercise and had a very hot shower and feeling toasty now.

limoybump · 23/09/2023 09:56

I put it on this morning!

Passerillage · 23/09/2023 09:58

My teen is lying on top of me as I type begging me to put on the heating but I honestly feel that putting on a pair of socks would do it. The rest of her is nice and toasty.

RampantIvy · 23/09/2023 09:58

Ours has come on a few times in the morning recently. The thermostat is set at 20. We have solar panels and that helps offset the cost and carbon footprint.
