Have you had your heating on yet?

My thermostat says my house is 18.5 degrees this morning and it feels really cold already! I've actually never had a thermostat before until now, in my old house I just used to put the heating on as and when but I'm thinking I should set it at a temperature so that it kicks in.

Anybody else had their heating on yet, and what temperature is your thermostat set at?

Funnily enough, we have just put ours on for 10 minutes this morning to give it a run through and make sure it is working ok.

YukoandHiro · 23/09/2023 10:55

Not yet. This morning was the first that I felt tempted and we had condensation inside our (double glazed) windows marking the start of winter 😒
But the kids don't seem at all bothered yet so I'm going to hang out for a while as we spent a staggering £3k on heating and hot last winter. We've had some new flooring since then so hoping the house will be better insulated this winter.

lljkk · 23/09/2023 11:03

Very tempted to light up woodburner yesterday. Held off because it was actually 19.5 indoors.

I feel the cold terribly <wimp>

Currently in 3 layers including gloves.

@caringcarer thank you very much 🥰

No , we are in the SE and still have fans going most days and every night . I’m still in shorts and a T shirt .

Is the south east is significantly hotter than everywhere else? Is your house south facing and exceptionally well insulated?
According to today's met office weather map the warmest place in the UK is 14 degrees just now with a forecast high of 18 degrees, which is not shorts and T-shirt weather for most people.

UndercoverCop · 23/09/2023 11:12

It's 18 at the moment here but bright and sunny, I've got sandals, cropped trousers and a t shirt on and DS has shorts and t shirt, I've got a cardi in my bag and a jumper for DS if it gets cold but it's lovely at the moment

DustyLee123 · 23/09/2023 11:13

No. It wont go on until October 1st at the earliest.
This morning I’ve put the sheepskins and brushed cotton sheets on the kids beds.

Newestname002 · 23/09/2023 11:13

I was tempted last night as it suddenly became very chilly, but put on a pair of fleece socks, a faux-Oodi over what I was wearing and a fleecy hat and instantly heated up. Later once I was in bed sandwiched between warm layers I was toasty warm as asleep in seconds. 🌹

Spendysis · 23/09/2023 11:16

Mine came on this morning I leave it on all year think the thermostat is at either 19 or 20 so it just comes on when it drops below that

NonMiDispiace · 23/09/2023 11:21

I put ours on this morning, it was 15° in the house. The thermostat is set to 17°, radiators are only on in the bedroom and living room and the bathroom heated towel rail will mean it’s toasty in there 😊
I’ve lit the wood burner several times over the last few weeks, so have that as an option too.
I flatly refuse to sit and feel cold despite wearing layers; I’m too old for that!

HeadAgainstWall0923 · 23/09/2023 11:23

It’s been on many times but I really feel the cold!!

I set my thermostat to heat the house to about 25-27 degrees 😂

Excitingnewusername · 23/09/2023 11:24

No thermostat here, but I put ours on for an hour this morning and yesterday morning (in the NW). Partly to give it a test run, and partly as warm clothes and a hot water bottle weren't taking the chill off.

It's not cold here (though it did plummet at about 2 this morning) but the unending rain and damp really has an effect. I probably should just have run the dehumidifier now I think of it.

ShowOfHands · 23/09/2023 11:24

I really feel the cold but I have plenty of thermals and decent ski base layers which I always wear before considering the heating. I haven't needed them yet but do have my big winter dressing gown out again.

Our heating doesn't click on until the house hits 16. Everybody else here feels hot all the time. DS is wandering round in just shorts today.

Topseyt123 · 23/09/2023 11:25

Our thermostat is set to 18.5⁰ and scheduled for or a few hours spread over morning and evening.

I don't think it has come on since about April except for the hot water because the core temperature in the house (currently reading 19.7⁰ on hive) hasn't dropped low enough.

So not on here at the moment. Not needed. It will kick in automatically when needed.

RampantIvy · 23/09/2023 11:29

Due to illness and circulation issues DH is very underweight, and just putting on another jumper doesn't cut it for him. This is why our thermostat is set higher (20 degrees) than most mumsnetters would have it.

justmyluck1234 · 23/09/2023 11:30

Nope not just yet

CurlyhairedAssassin · 23/09/2023 11:33

Our thermostat is set to 19 usually so at 18.5 the heating would come on. It hasn't quite yet but has come close this week. I know from past experience that this time of year it would probably only click on for half an hour in the morning and that would be enough to raise the temp to switch off again, and then the afternoons generally are warmer anyway so it wouldn't come on again probably. Even in the evenings, as we'd be cooking and be at home to have the TV and PCs on etc which generally warms the house a bit.

But I'd say in a couple of weeks it's going to click on for the first time and stay on for more than a little bit. It's definitely got cold early this year, or maybe it just feels that way because it was ridiculously hot only a couple of weeks back.

Metatarse · 23/09/2023 19:44

I have 3 layers of clothes on tonight. And heating on 19 and blanket on the sofa. It's not even October yet. I've got at least another 6 months of this, adding graduallymore layers. It really depresses me.

SpaceRaiders · 23/09/2023 19:46

No, I refuse. We have had hot water bottles a few nights last week and mornings are noticeably colder here.

LubaLuca · 23/09/2023 19:51

I clicked it on for an hour the other evening, really just to test it in case it wouldn't come on when we need it. All good, but it hasn't gone back on yet.

Edit - I did put the electric blanket on when I changed the bedding today, so looking forward to getting into a cosy nest tonight!

Babygirl888 · 23/09/2023 19:51

Ive had to the last 3 days, the loft extension bedroom is freezing. Only half an hour in the morning and half an hour in the evening before my bath. I have built up alot of credit on my gas account by overpaying through the summer so im just in 'fuck it' mode atm. Its also been off since may so if im cold, im going to use it!

ConsuelaHammock · 23/09/2023 19:52

My living room fire is lit today for the first time. We have a back boiler so it also heats the water and will air the radiators downstairs too.

TinglingTangling · 23/09/2023 19:55

We haven’t so far.

my house is currently at 18. I am feeling a bit chilly so have a knock off oodie on but my son is walking around in just a pair of shorts for bed and daughter has a T and shorts so won’t be putting it on yet!

muddyford · 23/09/2023 19:56

Thursday and Friday evening and this morning. Damp and very chilly.
