I joined after procrastinating putting up some curtain tie backs and now I am flying through a massive decluttering exercise. (I need to tackle the loft next, but I may need to sit down (a lot) before I do that 😄).

Hope the tagging works, SoE.

*Twirls onto the thread. Grin

I am so glad to hear you got back home safely after being stuck @Mumtobabyhavoc . That sounds very scary actually. Thanks

My day yesterday was more miss than hit. Went to the tip to be told they were still doing booked slots only (despite the announcement in the local paper more than a month ago that they were ceasing that with immediate effect... Hmm )

Went to B&Q and they did not have what i was after in terms of planters and pots. Went to fancy specialist nursery and neither did they.

Went into town (which is only a 15 minute drive and on the way to school but a faff for parking) to put in Dcs Christmas cheques at HSBC- to discover I had left the cheques on the hall table.

Just one of those days. I did find out I can get youtube on my phone though. (I am a total Luddite).

Oh! I followed @Aria999 's lead and ran the car through the car wash!

Today;

-swimming lessons [shivers]
-walk with friend
-coffee with friend
-talk with DS1 about GCSE options [more shivers]
-make smug chicken soup

Have a great day everyone!!

Peridot1 · 13/01/2024 09:05

Morning all.

That looks so good @SpiritOfEdna!

Ouch to your 3 hour journey home @Mumtobabyhavoc. Nothing worse than being trapped in bad traffic and bad weather conditions.

Sounds like a bit of a frustrating day @WinterLobelia.

I too followed the advice of attempting a task in bite sized pieces. An insurance claim. Much preferred the days where you got all the paperwork together and sent it off in the post but it all has to be done on line now. I tried to get DH to do it but it has to be me. So I have a few of the bits I need and will get a few more today with the aim to submit it on Monday.

I did an unexpected quick job yesterday of clearing out old tea towels. The drawer now closes!

not sure I did anything else in my list though!

Today:

  • strip a bed and wash bedding
  • boxes up to loft
  • gym
  • sort ironing basket - rewash the linen and iron while damp (getting ready for Australia)

Have a great day all.

Peridot1 · 13/01/2024 09:09

@Aria999 - I meant to comment about your DS. I’m not sure how old he is but my DS had a lot of issues in his mid to late teens and missed a lot of school. He ended up seeing a psychologist which helped a lot. Although finding one with availability was not easy as they were all booked up with stressed teens! It’s so hard dealing with health issues with our children and especially mental health issues. Getting the right help is so important. I hope you manage to get some help for him.

Aria999 · 13/01/2024 13:25

Thanks @Peridot1 - we do have a lot of therapy options (this being America!) just need to kind of tread a path through them and make sure it's actually helping!

He's been seeing a behavioral therapist for about a year and also had some OT for his sensory processing disorder.

The new doctor seems good, she's a psychiatrist, referral from his regular therapist who is finding him hard to make progress with (he really hates talking about feelings).

Aria999 · 13/01/2024 13:25

He is 8

Aria999 · 13/01/2024 13:27

Love the mural @SpiritOfEdna !

Peridot1 · 13/01/2024 13:45

Ah. Yes I would say 8 is a hard age for it all. DS was older so eventually worked out himself he need help and asked to see someone. After the mental health nurse at school said she didn’t think it was mental health related. He was having daily migraines which turned out to be stress related.

RunningKatie · 13/01/2024 15:12

Daily migraines sound worryingly familiar, dd's MRI has come back absolutely fine which is amazing but the headaches continue. Thankfully not at the point where she's missing school, but I'm not sure how we help her. Her school is struggling with behaviour like so many secondaries, and the good kids seem to be overlooked due to the ones starting fights, vaping etc.
It's all changed a lot since I was that age!
Today I have finally phoned the theatre and sorted our tickets, paid the deposit for an end of year party bus and taken a pile of books to the shop that has a help yourself bookcase. Phew!
This evening I'm tidying up more Christmas chocolate, last night I finished tidying away the Christmas Baileys, tough task but I managed it.

Peridot1 · 13/01/2024 17:24

@RunningKatie - I did the same with the Advocaat! Pretty good post Christmas tidying I thought!

Sorry to hear your DD is struggling with headaches. They are so debilitating.

FrostyFogg · 14/01/2024 09:02

Oh ffs just lost another post today. Was scrolling up the page to respond to something @WinterLobelia said and caught the 'mumsnet voices' ad, which didn't open a new window.

I was sending best wishes to those with struggling children, and admiring @Peridot1's accomplishments, love to our @petalpower who I suspect has her hands full. An argh to poor @Mumtobabyhavoc about her long drive home and an alliterative response to Lobelia (in whatever incarnation) re her facing a frustrating Friday.

And a big wave to everyone else @TawnyT are you still with us? And @SingleThreadJoiner I hope you are having a fun weekend with DD. @SpiritOfEdna I darent scroll up and lose another post but I think you are having a weekend with Gneice.

I'm steadily eating the elephant. A big sort out has resulted in some unexpected extra washing. So I plan to get on to that. I'm also going to deal with a kichen cupboard today as so inspired by Periodot being able to close her teatowel drawer.

  • *Happy Sunday everybody. I hope you all have a lovely day with loved ones (and/or get some peace and quiet!) 💐
petalpower · 14/01/2024 09:57

Morning all - I’m still here! It’s been a bit of a week of it trying to get support set up for dad and stepmother whilst I’m at a distance. My brother has taken on a lot of this as he’s very local to them and I’m 3 hours away. Step siblings have been around this week to help too and then it will be my turn after this week. Hospital are very helpfully sending dad letters with his cancer diagnosis on that he can’t really process and he then has to have the news explained to him again as he forgets. I have taken in the task of completing the attendance allowance form which is 30 pages long and very repetitive. I did it for auntie three years ago but it’s harder filling it in for dad.
Anyway I’m still cracking on with jobs and keeping busy. DD goes off travelling (gap year after uni) next month so I’ve been helping her get things ready. The house is almost back to normal after Christmas and the big building project and I’ve been trying to sort out a cupboard a day.
No individual responses unlike @FrostyFogg as I seem incapable of scrolling back without losing my post. Hope you’re all ok.

WinterLobelia · 14/01/2024 10:24

Morning all!

Last night I tidied away the last of the Christmas wine. Very pleased about it but it was a later start than usual this morning.

I need to catch up on washing today and will iron in front of the new Spiderman dvd the DCs have been clamouring to watch.

I am so sorry about your dad, @petalpower . It's so hard and when you are far away it can be such a strain. Thanks

Thanks to everyone as well.

WinterLobelia · 14/01/2024 10:30

I also want to also send a big hug to @Aria999 and @RunningKatie for their worries about DS and DD. I have nothing useful to suggest but just hope that all is well. Thanks

Hugs to everyone on our lovely thread as well. ❤

petalpower · 14/01/2024 21:15

Also hugs to @Aria999 and @RunningKatie . Having had issues with both my children in the past I can fully sympathise. I do think it’s true that you’re only as happy as your unhappiest child. When mine were young we thought the baby and toddler years were the tricky ones …..

Aria999 · 15/01/2024 02:39

Thanks for the kind thoughts everyone.

@RunningKatie we also had a (brief) problem with recurrent headaches and had an MRI which showed nothing unusual, luckily they then mysteriously disappeared after DS was prescribed a variety of nasty tasting medicine (he took it once then decided he no longer had headaches 🤣). Part of me wonders if the neurologist did it on purpose! Would that everything was so easy to solve. I hope your DD will be ok xx

SingleThreadJoiner · 15/01/2024 09:40

Hello friends, I am still here, just about - I seem to have accumulated too many major deadlines for the month of January, and it's really challenging. One of the biggest is - trying not to be too detailed/outing here - understanding how people that are visually impaired and use screenreaders will experience certain parts of the materials I've been working on for a project, and whether anything needs to be changed - which in turns means having to learn how screenreaders work in the first place!

However, we did have a lovely, if busy, weekend of seeing various friends and the D's godmother; last night I went on a tidying blitz, seeing how much I could get done in each room in ten minutes per room, and it was TRANSFORMATIVE, laundry put away, bags emptied and tidied, things put back in their place...made it so much nicer to come downstairs this morning!; and the babysitter is back from her Christmas break today, so there is light at the end of the tunnel 😃

@SpiritOfEdna I love the mural!! So professional and perfect!

@Aria999 and @RunningKatie sorry to hear about the headaches (both literal and metaphorical...). Interesting to hear about the stress component and the migraines - a close friend's child had really debilitating migraines for years, missing enormous amounts of school, until they found a good therapist and unraveled some prickly situations - and they almost entirely disappeared. Growing up can be so hard for our little ones 💜

@petalpower it sounds like you are doing the best in very difficult circumstances. It is hard being so far away but I hope it is some relief that you also have siblings and stepsiblings on the team.

A sunny and frosty start to the week here - the sunshine is cheering at least.

Peridot1 · 15/01/2024 09:48

Morning all.

i managed to comically hurt my ankle yesterday so my plans of going to the gym today are off. Was dozing on the sofa and got up to switch off the oven timer which was going off and hadn’t realised my leg had also gone to sleep. When I put my weight on it I went right over on the ankle. Sooooo painful. Felt sick and shaky for ages. DH made me an ice pack and I sat with it on until I started to shiver from cold. So today I am mainly resting! It’s not too sore now but a bit tender.

Have some washing on and also have a load of bedding ready to go on later. About to do dishwasher and clean kitchen and that might be it for the day. Will concentrate on things I can do sitting down.

Have a great day all.

RunningKatie · 15/01/2024 14:49

Oh @Peridot1 - my sister managed to break her foot standing up when it had gone dead. It sounds very painful, hope you're not feeling too sore.
Today I am attempting to clear the spare bed whilst my spreadsheets are crunching themselves. I'm unexpectedly wfh so bit of a bonus of being able to clear stuff in very quick bursts.
We've measured up for a new bed, so hopefully ordering that this week, then we need to rearrange the room. I suspect this is when dh will remember he painted around the wardrobes!!!

FrostyFogg · 16/01/2024 09:17

Morning all! @Peridot1 that sounds so painful! Hopefully the immediate ice and rest prevented too much damage. Hope it's not too bad today 💐

I had a fit of enthusiasm re the tagging, @petalpower but I do end up worrying that I've left someone out 😳

@SingleThreadJoiner those short bursts are so powerful, aren't they? My beloved flylady taught me the power of using a timer, particularly when things in the house have got overwhelming. I discovered her way back in 2008, and have been loosely following her routines ever since.

I think that I am going to do a ten min burst in each room today actually so thank you for the reminder. Currently I am on top of the washing and our dinner is in the slow cooker.

Have a lovely day y'all 💕

Peridot1 · 16/01/2024 09:54

@RunningKatie your poor sister. The pain of mine was bad enough - breaking it must have been excruciating.

@FrostyFogg the ice pack did seem to prevent too much bruising. I did it a couple of years ago too and my ankle swelled up a lot and went all sorts of colours. It’s just a bit tender now. I obviously jarred all up the leg as even my hip was achy yesterday. Still a bit achy today so taking it easy again. Was supposed to be starting Couch to 5K but think that’s probably not the best idea!

I have been catching up on washing bedding from guest beds. One more to go. Today’s extra task was emptying a cutlery tray and washing it. Also planning to get DH to clean the filter in the dishwasher and run a descaler through it. And clean around the door etc.

Might also have a bit of a clear out of cookery books. I have a couple of new ones but the shelves are too full to put them away so need a bit of a cull. Could also do with sorting a few charity bags.

And a brain dump list is needed!

TawnyT · 16/01/2024 12:03

Hello! Thanks for tagging me back in @FrostyFogg I've been a bit pants at life in general since Christmas, it was all a bit of a whirlwind with family at ours then straight back into work (v busy) and with the crap weather and being full of cold I've mostly been hiding from all responsibility. Trying to sort my self out this week and get out of my slump so you gave me a prompt at just the right time 😅

Keeping it simple with my goals for today -
Just need to clear my desk, and make it to the gym this evening.

Tried to catch up on recent posts - hope the foot is feeling better today @Peridot1

The 10 minute blitz is always a winner @SingleThreadJoiner I'm just about to take my lunch break... could probably get a few blitzs in instead of watching crap on YouTube 🤔

Hope everyone is having an OK day 💐 and 🫂 for those have tough times xx

WinterLobelia · 16/01/2024 12:42

Great to see you @TawnyT !

Hi to everyone. Hope everyone is fine and your foot much better @Peridot1

SpiritOfEdna · 16/01/2024 14:48

hello all from a snowy north west! My snow maths was bad (10cm vrs 5 cm) but had to swipe the car of snow at stupid oclock this morning to go to the gym. I was due to start an exercise class tonight but it's been cancelled because the school is closed. At least i dont have the dilemma of going out in the cold tonight, am assuming it'll be rerun.
Today

  • gym session this morning + morning stretches- DONE
  • hand wash a coat that I think I am going to attempt to reline and alter (just shorten the hem and sleeves). I have taken the existing lining out so I can copy the pattern and hopefully there is a youtube guide I can follow to putting it all back together. If it all goes wrong, there is a dressmaker locally who can sort it out for me, but would like to give it a go. It's drying now flat between towels. Handwashing done
  • empty dishwasher
  • I know there is a new CC in the post pile I need to find and activate to do a balance transfer
  • make a lentil soup
that's all for today, here's Flowers for all, have a good day, SoE.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 16/01/2024 19:55

SoE, very ambitious you! 👏
Tawney, sounds like a good approach. 👍

Like you Peridot, I did an extra task earlier: wiped two baseboards in hall and two door frames.* *It's these little oft-forgotten/ignored tasks that makes the difference.
Second load of laundry is almost finished. Will hang it up then put small load of towels in the wash. Trying to stay on top of towels/wash cloths as I use old wash cloths for wiping baby and toddler at diaper changes after cleaning first with tp.
Cleaned bathroom sink and toilet then did a quick wipe of floor as well.

Thinking of those under the weather; recovering from/struggling with illness/injury; and those caring for or worrying about family on this thread. Take it a day - or an hour! - at a time and please remember to be kind to yourselves. 🩷

Mumtobabyhavoc · 16/01/2024 21:22

And now I've cleaned my hairbrush. Took about 15-20 mins, but satisfying to wipe all the bristles and remove oil/product build-up. I really need to do the more often! Comb will be next.
