I joined after procrastinating putting up some curtain tie backs and now I am flying through a massive decluttering exercise. (I need to tackle the loft next, but I may need to sit down (a lot) before I do that 😄).

Hope the tagging works, SoE.

How are you all?
I had to cancel my aquafit today as Petaldog was coughing up blood this morning and had to go to the vets. He had blood tests and other checks and was sent home with me again. Poor boy. Still as bouncy as ever though. Waiting to hear back from the vet about other blood test results. Whilst at home and keeping an eye on the dog I mopped the hard floors (a job I really hate), got the long handled feather duster out to attack the cobwebs in the stairwell and cleaned the rubber seal in the washing machine door. After dropping DD at the station I popped into the supermarket for some bits for Christmas hampers for DH’s brothers and their wives. Bake Off tonight and feet up on the sofa!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 07/11/2023 22:32

Hello all. ☺️
Havoc is better, just a bit snotty now. Thanks for the well wishes here.

Petal, poor Petaldog! Could it be something eaten?
Aria, glad trip went well. A good dry run! 👏

Feeling bloated and sluggish. Managed a grocery shop after obgyn appt earlier. Happy to say Christmas presents for Havoc are done. All I need to do is bake and decorate and then meal plan for the days I'll be away in hospital. Yea me! 👏😂

Peridot1 · 08/11/2023 09:01

Morning all!

I got back yesterday after a very busy few days away in Washington (loved) and New York (not so much love). Was shattered so in bed by 8 last night. Even after a two hour nap in the morning.

Everyone seems to be getting lots done. Won’t name tag as will be here all day though!

I too seem to have some random piles in various rooms on chairs and on the dining table so they all need dealing with. At some stage!

I did quite a bit of shopping in the US so that all needs to be put away today. I unpacked yesterday but it is mostly all at the bottom of the stairs needing to go upstairs. I did one load of my washing and have another to do today.

Today:

  • general tidy round for cleaners
  • Take all my stuff upstairs
  • laundry
  • strip DS’s bed
  • brush dog (or get DH to)
  • start thinking about Christmas - both food and presents
  • tidy utility room
  • Start the hunt for a cocktail/black tie appropriate dress/outfit for an event next month

Have a great day all.

RunningKatie · 08/11/2023 11:11

Hope petaldog is ok @petalpower

This morning I've given the living room a quick blitz, it's always a dumping ground and whilst I lose my rag about it, it really does fall on deaf ears.

DH has tenatively finally agreed to a new bed, next I need to work on the concept of wardrobes! Ours aren't full length so my dresses can't hang properly and also they are not big enough. Maybe a January sales purchase I hope.

Today I need to sort some birthday stuff and hoover downstairs. I'm also going to start reading the lovely Nigel Slater Christmas book, I'm already behind with it. Need to prioritise books over phones.

Peridot1 · 08/11/2023 11:16

@RunningKatie - I have the Nigel Slater book on my list too! Was supposed to read it on my Kindle on my flights. But I didn’t. I have actually put it as my “Currently Reading” book on Good Reads this morning so aim to start today.

SingleThreadJoiner · 08/11/2023 14:22

@Aria999 what a gorgeous picture! Thanks for sharing :)

Anxiously awaiting news of Petaldog from @petalpower , how unsettling to have that happen. Poor darling dog.

I've mostly been hosting my guest when not working, so not much of use being done around the house. Did go swimming this morning though, and ordered some presents and bits and pieces online for Christmas, so not all is lost. Also successfully delegated a couple of tasks to the H so am quite pleased with myself!

Currently have the plumber here to change the bath taps and hopefully remove the horrible shrieking noises that happen any time the hot water is turned on...

Aria999 · 08/11/2023 15:17

That's worrying about petaldog @petalpower

Did the vet have any opinion about what it might be?

@Peridot1 glad your trip mostly went well, sorry you didn't enjoy New York so much.

@Mumtobabyhavoc when do you go into hospital? You are very organized on Christmas presents.

@SingleThreadJoiner good luck with the taps

FIL is deteriorating fast so DH is booking a flight to the UK tonight and I don't know when he will be back. Upsetting times.

petalpower · 08/11/2023 15:21

Thank you for your kind comments about Petaldog. The blood tests have come back clear this morning so the vet is questioning lung worm or potentially an inhaled foreign body. I’m waiting for the lung worm medication to come into the vets and the plan is to take that and monitor him over the next week or so. If no improvement then he will have to go back and be sedated to have imaging scans and further throat and lung checks. Poor boy. If it’s not offspring or elderly relatives to worry about then it’s the dog!
Currently cooking some mincemeat flapjack as I have a friend for lunch tomorrow and thought it might be good to try it before Christmas. I’ve moved the last of the furniture from the dining room so that DH can finish taking up the floor and am hoping this is the last of the really dusty, messy jobs. I may be kidding myself. Horrible weather here, dark and wet, and I’m lacking motivation.

petalpower · 08/11/2023 15:24

Cross posted with you there @Aria999 . Sorry to hear about your FIL. Safe travels to your DH.

Peridot1 · 08/11/2023 16:01

Sorry to hear about your FIL @Aria999. It’s always so hard being so far away.

And sorry about petaldog @petalpower.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 08/11/2023 17:12

Morning everyone. ☁️
after a very windy day yesterday we now have full clouds.
Aria, booked for the morning of Dec 28. 😬
I'm sorry to hear your fil isn't doing well. It's such an awful time when these things happen and living out of country adds to the stress. Strength to your family. 🩷

Petal, poor doggo! It's so difficult because, like children/babies, they can't say what's wrong.

Having a late start to the day. Planned on taking Havoc to playschool - which started 20 mins ago. 😵‍💫 Still in pj's with a cup of tea.
Might still hustle to get there shortly....
(despite waking up 2x last night, I still managed a total of 8hrs sleep which is a feat!)

RunningKatie · 09/11/2023 09:57

@Peridot1 - I have found a Christmas Chronicles podcast, it's not the whole book but it's lovely having Nigel chatting away whilst I'm spreadsheeting away.
Hope petaldog is ok @petalpower - what a worry.
Sorry to hear about your FIL @Aria999

Today we have the final family birthday of the year, it's gone well thus far. I need to clear the table and kitchen for the birthday dinner this evening.

SpiritOfEdna · 09/11/2023 11:29

@petalpower poor petaldoggo, I hope they recover nicely, @Aria999 worrying times for you, @Peridot1 I love NY, that is a shame. @RunningKatie we are just starting family birthday season - it's always a bit hectic in the run up to xmas, and hello everyone else.

I have had a spectacular run of bad luck this week - minor in the grand scheme of things, but still annoying

  • play cancelled - still waiting for refund
  • car had to stay in the garage for a very spendy repair or fail it's MOT
  • I could hear a weird clunking in the washing machine so I sat in front of it only to see my phone whizzing around. It is currently sitting in a bowl of rice. I am hoping to retrieve the photos somehow, but it's not backed up. I am hoping a day in rice will allow me to power it on and retreive what I need.
  • The same washing load, my most favourite jumper in the world came out the size of a small handkerchief. It all must have got swept up when I was sorting out a bedding change first thing.

Work is very busy today, so no big list for me today, I do need to though:

  • retrieve a parcel from Vinted
  • order a new phone
  • tidy up my work desk
  • chase refund for theatre tickets
That's all for now, have a good day all, SoE

Peridot1 · 09/11/2023 12:07

@SpiritOfEdna - that is a run of bad luck!

I normally love NY but we were there for such a short time this time and just rushed around. Found it very dirty and expensive.

@RunningKatie - I’ll hunt for the podcast. Might be good to listen to while out walking or doing the ironing.

Aria999 · 09/11/2023 13:43

Thanks for the well wishes everyone.

Oh no @SpiritOfEdna that's a bad day!

Feeling grumpy today, it's dark and damp, I don't feel like clearing up the kitchen, and I need to go and do more free work before I can close out the small project and find some way to grow a backbone when asked for extra work as part of a fixed price contract

SingleThreadJoiner · 10/11/2023 12:13

Hello everyone, there seem to be a lot of ups and downs in the group - sending particularly warm thoughts to @Aria999 (can the newly beloved babysitter help while H is away?) and @SpiritOfEdna for the truly rotten run of luck!

We are very happy with the new bath taps, and while he was there he also sorted out a bad seal on the toilet flush, and discovered that the bath overflow wasn't put in properly and could have flooded everything, so a success all round!

House guest left yesterday morning and I managed to do washes of both his sheets and towels. Not yet put away though...Also last night got the H to order our Christmas tree, it's through the PTA so quite early deadline. This morning I put away most of the online shopping and went to a pilates class. Plan to finish putting shopping away after lunch, and tidying the hallway as we have guests for lunch tomorrow and it's a complete state!

Hope everyone has a pleasant end to the week!

petalpower · 10/11/2023 12:46

Oh no @SpiritOfEdna , that sounds dreadful luck. Hope everything is going ok for your DH back in the UK @Aria999 . That’s a result from the plumber @SingleThreadJoiner . Good to have got those jobs sorted out and a bit of preemptive fixing of a potential problem
too.
just sitting in the hairdressers chair waiting for my colour to develop. Took
a pair of boots to fix the heels where it was coming slightly apart and the lovely chap said there was no charge. Also found a pair of useful black boots at a cheaper price than I expected so treated myself. Have to brave the post office queue to send another eBay parcel and want to get a few more Christmas bits and pieces whilst in town. Making the most of the stupidly expensive parking. No wonder the centre of town is declining as everyone goes to the retail parks with free parking on the edge of town.

Thunderinglightly · 11/11/2023 08:52

Happy Saturday everyone!
Gosh, lots done and as @SingleThreadJoiner said, many ups and downs for everyone.
Loving reading your updates and more warm thoughts to you all!
I was attempting to post daily but also had rather an unorthodox week. The worst things that happened in my own household are some torn curtains and a large coffee stain (thanks, cat!) but being the jam in the general sandwich, have helped deal with the various crises of family members young and old.

So I'm planning to calm myself with a soothing clean of both fridge and car, and I have arranged to meet a dear friend who I haven't seen for ages for a walk this afternoon. My sister is on mum duty today, and hopefully talking her into increasing her carer hours as we are all doing a lot more for her. She's self funding so she can make the choice, but she doesn't realise how much we do on top for her. And none of us are willing to let her come to harm by leaving her to her own devices. It's very true that getting old isn't for the faint hearted!

I'm glad to report that the sun is out once again, we too have a few birthdays coming up and we have a baby on the way somewhere in the mix!

Best wishes to you all 💐

petalpower · 11/11/2023 11:59

Hope everyone is ok this lovely sunny Saturday.
Sorry to hear of the sandwich situation @Thunderinglightly . I can fully sympathise! Hope you enjoy your walk and meet up with your friend and fingers crossed your sister makes progress with your mum. A new baby - how exciting!
I’m trying to work up the energy to do the ironing and then need to visit auntie in the care home. I have a new (very simple 20 piece) jigsaw to try with her as she showed interest in a jigsaw when I visited the other day. I keep trying to find new things to engage her as much as possible. Later DH and I are going to a village event that neither of us have much enthusiasm for but we feel we need to support it!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 12/11/2023 01:56

Panting prep has begun!
Door frame gaps and a section of baseboard gaps have been filled!!! 😁

Morning all.

Hope all well with sandwich issues, plumbing issues, hair colour, painting etc etc!

Not much being achieved here to be honest. Need to get back into a job a day next week. Otherwise Christmas will be here and I’ll be running around like a mad woman.

Yesterday we helped out in big tidy up of our village church yard/graveyard. Lots of cutting back and tidying. Aching today from the bending etc. Was a lovely morning though and it ended with the two minutes silence and the organist playing the Last Post. And bacon rolls and coffee!

A very lazy day planned here today. Just some washing and making a list for next week.

Have a good day all.

SpiritOfEdna · 13/11/2023 16:51

Wild and windy weather day here! Petaldog had a fantastic time chasing leaves on his walk.
Jobs done today:

  • a bit more online Christmas shopping ✔️
  • painted the crates for Christmas hampers x 2 ✔️
  • finally pulled up the dead Cosmos from the outside pots ✔️
  • posted eBay parcel and took the glass recycling on the same trip ✔️
  • met lovely friend for lunch ✔️
  • various other admin and household boring jobs ✔️
SingleThreadJoiner · 13/11/2023 22:37

I'm losing track of the days! But turns out it's still only Monday, just about. Whew. I hope everyone is safe in the storms. It was quite blowy today, but mostly sunny at least. Still felt like an effort to walk into the wind though!

@petalpower I like your idea about the jigsaw for your auntie. It it so good of you to keep thinking of new things - I know how hard it can be.

A successful weekend/Monday here - lunch with guests went well though required a lot of tidying up afterwards as well, and took the D swimming yesterday. She's finally tall enough for the big flume so my H went with her and she loved it! I would be terrified!

Minor successes from the past three days:

  • Countless loads of laundry, including a swimming stuff one, and a teatowels/discloths one.
  • Passing on two small bags of D's clothes to other mums
  • Sorted out present for a friend
  • Straightened and refolded two shelves of my tops, which had become quite embarassingly messy and shoved about
  • Delivered almost 100 leaflets for the PTA about Christmas trees 😱(when I volunteered to do that particular patch I thought it was more like 30 houses, not 100 postboxes! Most of them flats!)

Parents coming tomorrow for almost a week (though in hotel) and very much looking forward to their contributions - my dad usually restocks the freezer, and my mom blitzes all sorts of tasks...yes I'm in my early 40s but still appreciate the help when it comes! 😆

Thunderinglightly · 14/11/2023 06:34

Good morning everyone! Thank you @petalpower. How did auntie get on with the jigsaw? I hope you are getting enough rest. It really was quite blowy yesterday wasn't it? love the mental image of Petaldog chasing the leaves!

You don't stop @Mumtobabyhavoc! I hope you get your feet up sometimes. It's going to be lovely though. Are you counting days yet or are you still on weeks? Hope you are feeling well 💐

Your Sunday morning sounds lovely @Peridot1 A good place to join the two minutes silence. We were at my mum's so we did it together while watching the ceremony on TV.

👋 @SpiritOfEdna! Lost and broken phones really do impact our lives now don't they, so I'm happy for you that you got a replacement quickly. I'm working on using mine less but there's still so much that I rely on with it.

Busy weekend @SingleThreadJoiner ! And 100 leaflets! Those must have taken a while to post! I hope you have a lovely time with your parents. You put me in mind of my late father, who paid for my family grocery bill when we unexpectedly found ourselves in the same supermarket queue many years ago.

👋 @Aria999 and @OrangePumpkinLobelia and @RunningKatie and anyone I may have forgotten 😊

Yrsterday was mostly errands and picking up some birthday presents. I'm volunteering with the horses today, and yesterday I started back with the general declutter, so I hope to do another short burst today. I might focus on a clothing drawer.
There's an area in the dining room/office that desperately needs a dust so I think I'll go and do that now!
