OhYouBadBadKitten I would like to see Starmer push for PR. It would be so much healthier for democracy. But I guess he won't, especially if he has a big majority!

If he manages to reform significantly HoL in his first term, that would open the way to a discussion of PR in the longer term I hope.

So as well as being responsible for the state of the country, despite not being in power, Labour are also guilty of having rotten boroughs despite rotten boroughs ceasing to exist 80 years before the Labour party was founded.

pointythings · 06/10/2023 10:24

I think if your argument to not vote Labour is that Labour were so awful 50 to 60 years ago, you need to go away and find better arguments. Pathetic.

Edited

But Jeremy Corbyn was born in 1949, so the 1950s and 60s are probably his fault.

newnamethanks · 06/10/2023 10:43

Who's buying up all the HS2 now unwanted land? I guarantee its not propective Labour voters. And, oh look, its so cheap. How can that be? It's like a small miracle for property developers and hard luck if your house was compulsorily purchased from under you, it's already gone and you're not getting it back. And people want to vote for more of this?

mibbelucieachwell · 06/10/2023 10:48

I was wondering about the homeowners whose homes were purchased compulsorily (is that a real word?) Do they get first dibs at buying?

Notonthestairs · 06/10/2023 10:53

Extraordinary story from @DavidParsley50 @theipaper - The government bought a £1.5m house on the HS2 line less than 24 hours before Rishi Sunak cancelled it

Wow.

Corruption? Incompetence? Neither's a good look.

This pours doubt on the theory that Labour are going to need to do a deal with the SNP.

That was always bollocks anyway. Scotland was solid Labour pre the SNP era.

Plus the current polling suggests that Labour would have a majority just with the seats they will win at a GE in England.

You have to hope incompetence dont you?

You have to hope incompetence dont you?

That’s known as the triumph of hope over experience.

derxa · 06/10/2023 07:37

And you know exactly what I mean. Rampant corruption

As someone who did live in Scotland during part of the time frame you mention I am none the wiser so you will need to spell it out.

A reminder : the Tories lost their deposit.

newnamethanks · 06/10/2023 13:16

LOST DEPOSIT! 👏 👏 👏 Well done Scots.

Cornettoninja · 06/10/2023 13:39

Did anyone catch James O’B this morning? I found his theory of the tories salting the earth/scorched earth entirely plausible particularly with regards to HS2.

I’m also glad people are now pointing out that KS is in no position to make pledges or policies right now - the tories still have a potential year to cause more havoc. Any plans put forward now could be impossible by the time anyone gets anywhere near turfing them out.

RafaistheKingofClay · 06/10/2023 14:00

If Tories want to hear all starmer’s policies, they need to call an election. I’m sure nobody will mind if they do.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 06/10/2023 14:10

I'm currently studying anf there's another woman in my class who is utterly useless and does fuck all. She tries to cling onto other people's coat tails and have them spoon feed her. She has absolutely no clue about anything.

The tories are the same. They have no idea how to fix anything. Starmer knows this, that's why he's giving nothing away. He knows they want his solutions so that they can spin them as their own. He's giving them space to hoist themselves with their own petard.

As PP says, if they want him to properly set out his plans, call an election. Until then enjoy stewing in your own juices.

I almost wet myself watching that when it cut to Braverman at the point where fighting nazis and fascists came up.

Ooooh has he done it? Everyone was urging him to, including me... I told him his country needs him and not to let our Pen down, she's been waiting a long time for him to do his stuff.
He liked my tweet 🤣

Is this the fight that Penny Mordaunt is psyching herself up for?
The one where she loses her seat?
Electoral Calculus reckons she has a 34% chance of keeping her seat, and Labour have a 65% chance of gaining it.

I find myself checking Electoral Calculus far too often: it's often the only political ray of hope in my day.

EXCLUSIVE: HS2 evictees to be told they can buy back their old homes, but at a higher price.

Those who sold properties along the axed northern leg of HS2 may have to pay hundreds of thousands more to return home.
