The Tories in the constituency may have been too busy standing up and fighting to vote.

Who has been corrupted derxa. You may need to spell it out as I'm clearly being a bit thick in not understanding what you are insinuating.

I'm talking about things like building contracts handed out to pals during the reign of Old Labour in the 60s and 70s. People began to realise that life was not getting any better despite decades of voting for Labour. That's why Scotland got rid of them. Well that and the dream of independence.

Notonthestairs · 06/10/2023 07:55

Thanks for the link.
I dont see where the corruption is so please spell it out for me.

My constituency will never vote Labour so its only ever going to be a toss up between Cons/L/D. It doesnt make it a rotten borough and I would never suggest my fellow voters had been subject to corruption even if we end up with an MP I didnt select myself.

I take it you will join me in condeming the practice by the current government of handing out PPE contracts to their mates with no experience in that industry and grossly inflated prices during the covid pandemic?

Oh, gotcha. So that means all the current Tory seats are rotten boroughs then, what with all the contracts being handed out to pals.

derxa · 06/10/2023 07:37

And you know exactly what I mean. Rampant corruption

I kind of agree with Derxa. I think labour won partly because of rampant corruption. People have had enough of Tory corruption.

IClaudine · 06/10/2023 08:07

Take heart Derxa.

The Tories were never going to win, but at least Sunak's rousing speech and Mordaunt's urging to "stand up and fight" inspired voters to get out to the ballot box. It is not as if the Tory share of the vote plummeted from 15% to 3.9%. Oh, wait...

This is a small taste of GE night 2024. I can't wait.

I totally agree with you. Absolutely shameful and for that reason the Tories deserve to be kicked out.

Zonder · 06/10/2023 08:11

I still smile every time I see / hear Stand up and Fight! It gave me such a laugh last night. I don't think PM realised how much good she was doing with that speech.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/10/2023 08:11

derxa can I apologise to you for being overly catty with the teddy picture. That was uncharacteristically mean of me.

cakeorwine · 06/10/2023 08:11

There was something in Braverman's speech about immigrants living parallel lives in towns and cities.

Lots of us live parallel lives. Because we have different lives We may live in the same cities and towns but barely interact with each other.

derxa · 06/10/2023 08:14

The thing is I care about Scotland. The SNP have proved to be useless and corrupt. It would be nice to see a bit of balance between the SNP and Labour. I'd like to see a higher calibre of politician back in Scotland.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/10/2023 08:14

Stand up and Fight has provoked hilarious imagery in my head. But of course it has been exactly what the Tories have been trying to induce. So much othering and demonising. Fracturing society for their own gains.

Is it possible they have united more people in laughing at them, than they have caused division on this occassion?

Then I am sure you are delighted that there is now one fewer SNP MP and one more Labour MP than at the last GE.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/10/2023 08:18

I think that would be a healthy picture derxa. It's better for good governing to have a reasonable size of opposition to provide some checks.

This is true! I think a lot of people will also be thinking 'who the fuck are we supposed to be fighting?' Which is actually a good way of defusing tension.

This is going to be a challenge for the whole of the UK after the next GE with Labour having a majority of well over 100, and potentially a majority larger than the number of seats of the next largest party.

Agreed. And while we desperately need rapid change and as much as I despise the Tory party, too much power is never a good thing.

Nevertheless, I will still cheer after election night and will put all my efforts in to ensure that my Tory MP is not one of those re-elected.

mibbelucieachwell · 06/10/2023 08:34

Morning all.

I see from my extensive research quick read of wiki that the former Rutherglen constituency voted Conservative in the 1950s.

countrygirl99 · 06/10/2023 08:44

@jgw1 agreed. Big majorities sound good on paper but mean a governmentis lacking in checks and is more prone to corruption. A majority of 20-30 would be good. Enough to work with, small enough not to get carried away.

Something to be thankful to PM for. Do you think her speech writer wrote it for a joke? It seemed to me that she got to a moment where she seemed to think fuck, where am I going with this? Then decides it's too late and she had better keep going with it.

Yes thanks for that. I was searching wiki but gave up. Churchill was PM in 1951 when Rutherglen last had a Tory MP and that was by a very slim majority.

The UK needs to change their voting system for that to happen, even Labour has gone rather quiet on PR
