You’re right. We don’t need filthy foreign money. Unless it’s invested in uninhabited luxury flats, of course

Don't mention the empty homes, that makes you communist.

My bloke’s been using “left wing, pinko, commie slime ball” as a term of endearment for 25 years!

Inheritance tax next, a tax that only applies to about 4% of people Hmm

What are they planning to cut to fund this tax bung to the wealthiest in the country?

DuncinToffee · 24/09/2023 10:11

I don't know if that is even mentioned in the Times article, it's behind paywall. I have only seen quotes about the Tories being happy that about a third of people think they’ll have to pay inheritance tax when that is not the case according to their own numbers.

Just more soundbites from a desperate Sunak

Unfunded tax cut for London/south east.

It will be a manifesto pledge which - if the Conservatives win the next election - will be dropped as unaffordable.

Notonthestairs · 24/09/2023 10:23

Thanks Duncin.

So they can't afford to do it. But want to suggest they can for political gain.

Fancy announcing this and simultaneously announcing we can't afford HS2 from Birmingham to Manchester.

Notonthestairs · 24/09/2023 10:30

I don't know how any Conservative can claim to be serious about education.

Spending on school sixth forms & colleges -

Since 2010–11, there has been a decline in per-student spending across all types of institutions. Between 2010–11 and 2019–20, spending per student fell by 14% in colleges and 28% in school sixth forms. For colleges, this left spending per student at around the level it was in 2004–05, while spending per student in sixth forms was lower than at any point since at least 2002.
Overall, per-pupil spending in 16–18 education is set to rise by 9% between 2021–22 and 2024–25. Yet even with the additional funding set out in recent spending reviews, college spending per pupil in 2024–25 will still be around 5% below 2010–11 levels, while school sixth-form spending per sixth-form pupil will be 22% below 2010–11 levels. Therefore, the additional funding for sixth forms and colleges will only partially reverse the cuts of the previous decade.

Tbh I think they are scrambling as I suspect Labour are going to put education at the centre of their manifesto.

All the Conservative plans seems crazy to me. Banning smoking entirely for future generations yet nothing about vaping or other nicotine use? Inheritance tax and keeping the triple lock but nothing for working age people?

They are floundering badly, I just hope this means an election is coming sooner rather than later

Cornettoninja · 24/09/2023 11:41

There is no choice but to bin off the tories economically speaking. Business, trade and investment no longer have any trust or respect for the UK (or rather the people throwing their weight about).

Removing this entire cohort from the steering wheel will instantaneously improve our standing and opportunities for recovery, maybe even some sort of growth.

This government is dead in the water purely of their own making.

The sooner the wider electorate realise that, accept that we’ll be fixing this for decades and that anyone promising rainbows and unicorns simply isn’t telling the truth.

LlynTegid · 24/09/2023 11:53

I wonder if some of the Tory suggestions are to throw us off the scent as it were.

BIossomtoes · 24/09/2023 12:03

The inheritance tax suggestion is risible. They’ve swallowed The Telegraph’s recent campaign whole. Given the average age of Tory voters you’d think they’d be looking to attract younger generations, so what do they do? Go backwards on the single issue young people care most about. Fuckwits, the lot of them.

Lonelycrab · 24/09/2023 12:49

Sunak desperately flailing about with this inheritance tax reform, another tax break for the very wealthy, just what a country that’s on its knees needs. Not going to win any support though, I guess it’s just another way to fill their pockets before the inevitable change of govt.
To think we’ve got another year of this crapSad

Notonthestairs · 24/09/2023 12:57

"They’ve swallowed The Telegraph’s recent campaign whole."

Yep. Another example of the tail wagging the dog.

I also see the Telegraph have gone full attack mode on the National Trust again. Must remember to get my votes in for AGM before the deadline.

Suella Braverman orders review as police officers 'shouldn't fear ending up in the dock'. I'd say they don't fear it and that's part of the problem.

How can police officers be expected to uphold the law if they fear being prosecuted for murdering people?

Notonthestairs · 24/09/2023 16:21

A review is probably necessary but I'd expect that at this stage and given the ongoing criminal case it to be an internal matter. Really inappropriate for the Home Secretary to be offering any further comment than that.

Unless of course she doesn't care whether her comments are in contempt of court and she's just dredging for votes (in the next leadership election).

DuncinToffee · 24/09/2023 16:29

Why is she commenting on a case that is happening at the moment, doesn't that show contempt at court or something?

She's linked her tweet to a Telegraph article about the Kaba case. No idea why she'd do that unless she wanted her tweets to be read in response to the case.

Stupidity or deliberate interference?

itsgettingweird · 24/09/2023 16:54

Stupidity or deliberate interference?

It's Braverman. It'll be both!

She's really full of her own sense of self importance which means she's too stupid to realise that interference is a stupid move 🙄🤦🏼‍♀️

RafaistheKingofClay · 24/09/2023 17:31

You’d think a lawyer would know better but it’s Braverman so…

It is amazing how we were told for months that we couldn't discuss Johnson and Sunak's law breaking because it was being investigated by the police, but now the Home Secretary is quite happy to interfere in the judicial process.
