Which foods do you rarely see on menus now? I was watching some old adverts on YouTube for Little Chef and such which made me think of this.

Do you still get melon as a starter? I used to love that as a child. Also a glass of orange juice as a starter. I went to a hotel in around 2010 and they still had that as an option on the menu. I found it rather charming.

Banana split

Yes this one too.

plasticinevitable · 10/09/2023 22:34

Oh, and breaded brie/camembert with cranberry sauce has become obsolete

Never heard of this before but it sounds gorgeous.

Waitrose seem to sell them, as well as Brakes (for restaurants, pubs etc.)

Fruit juice as a starter
Egg mayonnaise
Chicken Maryland - my favourite on a menu in the 70s. Like southern fried chicken with fried banana and sweetcorn fritters.

Vary rarely do you see a cheese board on a menu now. Shame as I love a cheese board.

Really? I don't remember the last time I went to a restaurant that DIDN'T have a cheeseboard on the menu!

Chicken in a basket

Robotalkingrubbish · 10/09/2023 22:45

Half a chicken and chips in a basket. All you seem to get these days is a dry chicken breast.

The Brie and cranberry sauce is all going into panini now, usually along with bacon

Vegans (3% of UK population) have somehow trumped Vegetarians (10%) of UK population. It’s ultimately laziness on restaurants parts: we’ve been conflated somehow?

Yes, restaurants figure that since vegetarians can eat vegan food, but vegans can't eat vegetarian stuff i.e. made with dairy, eggs, honey etc., then it's easiest and most logical to just make everything that doesn't contain meat or fish vegan. So bye bye milk, cheese, cream, eggs etc.

I don't actually mind meat substitutes myself, but I understand other vegetarians' grievances. Mind, I did have a lovely lentil based "shepherd's" pie at the hotel we stayed at the other weekend, it was delicious.

Cajun chicken. Was a staple in the early 00’s but you never see it on menus anymore.

whynotwhatknot · 10/09/2023 22:53

Not restaurant but hazelnut yogurt from Sainsbury’s.

Pate, now it’s either a parfait or terrine.

Recently had a cheese soufflé and it was sooo good.

I remember Fatty Arbuckles, my brothers took dates there. Best burgers apparently.

Hated Garfunkels. I ate in the one in Victoria and Leicester Square and ended up with food poisoning both times!

whynotwhatknot · 10/09/2023 22:55

i only went to fatty arbuckles once they did have good burgers

Wincarnis · 10/09/2023 22:58

Came on to say egg mayo with paprika as a starter. I used to waitress at a masonic lodge in the mids 00s and it was often on the menu. I used to love eating any extras

Also love a black forest gateau and melon and Parma ham. Whitebait as a starter too

They still do whitebait in Côte and at The ivy I think. It's retro... And delicious. And about 700 cals just for the starter.

BlackForestCake · 10/09/2023 23:01

In the 80s
There were entire restaurants devoted to baked potatoes

Feraldogmum · 10/09/2023 23:01

So funny got up with a bit of a hangover this morning and said to hubby whatever happened to Little Chefs and Happy Eaters,I really fancied one of their dirty great fry ups followed by waffles.
My mum and dad never did fine dining,to them going to a Little Chef was a meal/night out.

Feraldogmum · 10/09/2023 23:03

Blackforestcake, I remember Spud u Like in the 80s,used to visit one in Plymouth after a night out.

susan123graeme · 10/09/2023 23:04

Orange juice for starters (?!!) How was that ever a starter !!

TommyNever · 10/09/2023 23:06

"Try the veal" goes the saying, but I haven't seen much veal on offer lately.

Vegetarian meals are getting harder to find in restaurants now. Mostly vegan substitutes and it's simply just not the same.

This drives me crackers! I don’t want coconut tzatziki or vegan feta! And don’t get me started on the jackfruit

And where are all the veggie burgers? It’s all the vegan beyond meat ones now with vegan cheese.

Orange juice for starters (?!!) How was that ever a starter !!

Because orange juice was an expensive luxury. It took 3 or 4 of the oranges we had back then to get a decent glassful.
It was that, canned grapefruit segments, not very nice tomato soup or (in posher places) melon with ginger (dry powdered of course.)

whynotwhatknot · 10/09/2023 23:09

ive seen lots of whitebait mainly in pub/resturants
